Broken or Damaged Windows?Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks?

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and lived in that area until I was five when my parents moved to Nailsworth. I was brought up in Nailsworth and at-tended the primary school there and then progressed to Archway Secondary School.

What did you do after you left school? After I left school I did a one year art foundation course in Stroud which led to a place at Central Saint Martins in London where I started a degree in theatre design. I was in London for four years, studying, working and enjoying life.

I eventually moved back to Stroud– gave in to the pull of the hills- and took a job at Summerbees hair salon in Stroud where I did my training.

What happened after that? After leaving to have my second child I decided to try self-employment and went mobile. It was a tough time and I learnt a lot about running a small business and managing money until at last all my hard work started to pay off and I became busier and busier. How did you become interested in Organic hairdressing? One evening researching the things that I find most important (healthy food and cosmetics) I stumbled across a new concept to me, professional herbal and healthy hair colour! It took me about five or six months to re-ally make that first step to order the products to try them out. It was all thanks to one particular client that was so interested in using the alterna-tive colour, she gave me a good nudge to try them out-and on her!

What happened next? Having learnt the theory behind the products and the science of how they work and why they are better for our health, I realised I did not want to use the mainstream colours any longer but I also knew I now had to try and con-vince and convert all my clients! However, this actually proved easier than I thought and once people had tried them they were amazed at how different and healthy their hair became and how the tones of the colours looked so natural and without the brassy tone that comes with mainstream colours. I then began trying to find styling products and shampoos that had the same ethos as the colours, that were as natural as possible and without the unhealthy chemicals like SLS or parabens. This actually proved quite difficult but I did eventually find a range that ticked all the boxes and on top of that actually worked and this was John Masters Or-ganics. So by this time I was a fully organic and herbal hairdresser, only using products that contained no harmful ingredients and I became so busy! It became apparent that there had been a gap in the market and that there was no one offering a service like mine in the five valleys and a bit beyond. What was I to do? I was so busy I could not take on any new clients, should I tick along happy doing what I was doing? This was quite appealing as by this time I had a three and a six year old! What did you decide to do? The decision was finally made for me when I went on a training day at an organic salon in London and I was inspired. I knew then that this was what I needed to do. During the next six months I was to write and re-write business plan after business plan trying to make it affordable. In the end a loan was just not possible and I began to realise this would not hap-pen. However, by chance I saw an advert for a shop to rent. I made en-quires and found that it could be possible-I had £2,000 in my ISA and I went for it, challenge on! I managed to stick to the budget and here I am now with my own organic salon. What of the future? I am aiming to build the business keeping to the ethos that I have set out and to keep challenging the norm of a working salon.

Well, last month we had an individual response to my opinion-and a surprising interpretation of my words! Clearly, Lawrence Heath-cliffe and I do not see ‘eye to eye’. What I saw as gentle and per-suasive he saw as hectoring and petulant. Apparently, my view about current media-fuelled role models is ‘arrogant and elitist’. Really? I hardly think so. I only suggested that true happiness does not (in my opinion) emerge from the pursuit of money, fame and individual gratification.

Anyway, let us not dwell on our differences of opinion for too long. It is, in fact, these very differences which give our lives so much variety. To quote a religious poet (sorry Mr Heathcliffe) Gerard Manley Hopkins ‘Glory be to god for dappled things’ (the senti-ment can be appreciated whether or not you or I believe in a god). The world that surrounds us is composed of an incredible variety of species that enliven our lives and which I believe we have a re-sponsibility to sustain. Preserving this variety is essential to the whole wellbeing of ecostructure and the environment.

I am actually not a ‘lone voice crying in the wilderness’ in my con-cern for our environment, the same concerns have for many years been voiced by much more illustrious people than I. David Atten-borough for one has spent his life being fascinated by and in turn fascinating us with the physical features and species that sur-round us. His television programmes are a delight, largely as a result of his boundless enthusiasm and love of this planet.

Similar consideration and care shown to those humans with whom we come in contact can only be of benefit to us all (or so I believe) especially at this time of year-the so called ‘season of goodwill’. Well I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas holiday and is looking forward to a New year refreshed and revitalised! Happy New Year to you all and especially Mr Heathcliffe!

Garden View-this month friends in need

The British winter is a wonderful thing: sunshine and mild temperatures one day and

several degrees below the next. If you think that is confusing for us gardeners, then imagine what it’s like for the wildlife.

For me, gardening is as much about the creatures which inhabit my plot as it is about the plants. In view of this, I like to make life as easy as possible for my little garden friends.

I’m not the tidiest gardener in the world, but this turns out to be a bonus in my quest to help the local wildlife. So you might think I’m lazy for not cutting down bare stems and soggy seed heads, but in fact I am providing luxury accommodation for over-wintering insects. These in turn attract certain birds and other insects for whom the luxury accommodation is more akin to a fast-food establishment.

When you trim hollow-stemmed plants, cut them into 10cm lengths and bind a few together into a bunch. Push this bunch of stems into a hedge or a sheltered corner and insects will find it...a sort of ‘build it and they will come’ construction...with apologies for the Kevin Costner film reference there! You can also buy some wonderful purpose-built constructions. My mother bought me an impressively titled ‘insect condominium’ a few Christmases ago which has proved very popular with solitary bees and ladybirds alike.

A gardening friend of mine gave me a great tip. He suggested placing a couple of ladybird shelters near my rose bushes so that when the warmer weather finally comes, early aphids will be gobbled up by the ladybirds and their larvae.

Top Bird-feeding Tips Start with the basics A good quality sunflower seed based mix in a tubular feeder is a great starting point and will attract a wide variety of birds.

Add some extras Peanuts are a good source of protein and fat and are very popular. Raisins and apple chunks on a platform will attract blackbirds, thrushes and other fruit-lovers. Fat or suet is high-energy and gratefully received by many species during colder weather. Niger seed in small feeders will attract shy goldfinches if hung in a quieter part of the garden.

Check your hygiene Feeders should be clean and mould-free or they may spread disease.

Don’t forget water Fresh water is really important, especially if temperatures are below freezing.

Safety first Consider placing stickers on patio doors to reduce the risk of collisions. Protect birds from cats by hanging the feeders high enough and removing any potential hiding places nearby.

When working in an office it is sometimes quite hard to find the time to keep physically active during the day – unless you’re getting up to make your 10th cup of tea of the day! Although being stuck at a desk all day might be necessary for your job, it isn’t that great for your health. Over 68% of office workers in a recent survey, said they often felt tired, sluggish and suffered from aching back muscles etc. As well as good posture, it’s important you try as many things as you can to help keep you happy and healthy all throughout your working day.

Beware of R.S.I

R.S.I or repetitive strain injuries - more commonly occur in people who work in offices. People who sit at their desk for the major part of their day working at a computer, usually get R.S.I in their wrists, back and eyes. This type of injury comes from doing repetitive tasks that puts a strain on your body causing it to ache or be-come weakened.

Things such as sitting in an upright position, in a back supporting chair will help you stay clear of R.S.I inju-ries. Also save your eyes the strain by not putting your face to close to the screen when working. Most of-fice employers are by law required to cover an eye test for you and a per-centage of the cost towards a pair of glasses, if you are finding you are having problems with your eye sight from working at a computer.
