Welcome…... Walking the dogs at the moment is espe-cially good as I am watching all the new buds shooting through and have recently seen some wonderful snowdrops that from a distance do look just like a carpet of snow has fallen over the woodland-just beautiful.

This issue is very Spring orientated with a feature on Spring cleaning your home using natural methods and an article on the top jobs for March in your garden.

If you notice that our popular People Pro-file column is missing then rest assured it will return next month but in it’s place we have a feature on St. Patrick’s Day. Opin-ions are apparently divided as to whether or not St Patrick actually existed so now could be your chance to write in and let us know what you think-did he or did he not exist? Over to you. ...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Here comes the rain again. What a sur-prise we have had the wettest winter since records began. Flooding has led to discussions about the clearing of drain-age channels and ditches. particularly in the Somerset levels. I was reminded by a not so elderly gentleman that not all that many years ago there used to be

roadmen throughout the country whose job it was to mend the roads, in-cluding clearing out the culverts, streams and ditches which were likely to get blocked. Apparently "a Roadman" nowadays is a young lad who is streetwise and who knows the right places to hang out! This probably ex-plains why the old roadmen have died out as a breed! Apparently modern man has better things to spend our money on then cleaning out ditches! - oh until we are flooded out of course!

Which brings me to another modern phenomenon, namely the inability of large organisations/websites to make decisions where circumstances are not the norm. Tried getting an insurance quote if you cannot tick all the right boxes? If you introduce a problem such as flooding then you get no quote at all! Similarly if you have the audacity to claim on your insurance then your insurance quote the next year rockets and you have to get in-sured with a different insurer, if you can!

Try obtaining a re-mortgage when you require a second charge to your Bank for your business overdraft. Suddenly you become involved in a nightmare scenario of delays and fruitless phone calls to call centres in India, where they promise to reply within 48 hours but never do. The gen-eral dumbing down of most of these lending organisations means that un-less you tick the standard boxes the whole system grinds to a juddering halt.

Changed your phone line recently? Well don't bother unless you want to be phone-less and off line for several days, having been conned by some communications salesman who believes his own lies that the phone line will be supplied instantaneously. I could go on, but you've probably heard enough. Anyone out there had similar problems? Surely not!

Happy days

Richard Maisey

St. Patrick’s Day

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Which, roughly translated, is ‘St Patrick’s Day blessings upon you all.”

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland (both Northern Ireland and Eire). You may be surprised to learn though that he wasn’t Irish at all. He was English!

So how did an Englishman become the symbol of all things Irish?

Patrick’s early life was the stuff of a boy’s own adventure. He was kidnapped as a teenager and sold as a slave in Ireland. There he worked as a shepherd, in harsh conditions, for six years. Then one night, so the story goes, he heard God speak to him and tell him it was time to escape. This he did and he travelled back to Britain by boat. Once there though he was recaptured and returned to slavery. But Patrick didn’t give up. He escaped again, this time successfully, and journeyed through Europe before he finally settled in a French monastery, where he trained to be a priest. Then he returned to Britain.

One night he heard voices calling him back to Ireland. He decided that his

mission was to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. First though, he resumed his studies in France and was eventually made a bishop, whereupon he finally returned to Ireland.

The High King of Tara was the most powerful man in Ireland and was initially angered by Patrick’s arrival, but the bishop’s quiet confidence in his faith won him over and the

King gave Patrick permission to preach Christianity around the land.

St. Patrick is famous for having used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, “There is one stem but there are three leaves on it. So it is with the Blessed Trinity. There is one God but three persons stemming from the same divinity.”

He’s also famous for having banished snakes from Ireland though in fact this story is symbolic. The snake was a symbol of paganism and was therefore ‘banished’ only by way of being replaced with the Christian cross.

Patrick died on March 17th, 461AD and is believed to buried in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland.

Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated enthusiastically even by people who’ve never set foot on the Emerald Isle. It’s a chance for everyone to celebrate their love of Ireland and all things Irish.

Why not join in the celebrations. Order a green beer, a Guinness or an Irish Whiskey in your local Irish pub, then raise your glass and shout Sláinte...that’s ‘cheers’ to you and me!

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing

Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of

work. So keep up the good work! Denis Morris Handyman.

Round the Garden It’s time to spring into action!

Which are the top jobs for March?

Well pruning features large! It’s time to hard prune late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is past.

Spring flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.

If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.

Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing.

Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.

Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead.

I have one word to say...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary!

Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of

slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe whilst enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.

There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.

Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.

Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot.

Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need repotting.

With a multitude of colours and scents available, if you try some lilies this year I guarantee you’ll be hooked forever.

The first day of spring is officially March 21st. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance...

Spring is in the air and many of us will soon start our spring clean, why not make your spring clean a bit different this year by using essential oils? Essential oils have been used effective-

ly for thousands of years for everything from medicine to beauty. Most of us have heard of lavender oil and tea tree and probably know that lavender is relaxing and tea tree is antiseptic, the properties of these precious drops of oil extracted from plants bushes and trees can be used throughout the house. Here are a few ideas for you to try in your home, oils go a long way so when using essential oils, often less is more!

The House When you arrive at your house or a visitor arrives, one of the first things they notice is the aroma. Essential oils can be used to help your house smell gorgeous. Add 6-8 drops of your favorite scent to water in a diffuser or place the drops directly into a bowl of boil-ing water. Sweet orange, lemon and your favorite spice oil are especially good when dif-fused during the winter months for a refreshing, warming aroma and atmosphere. Place cotton wool balls fragranced with lavender in wardrobes drawers and linen closets to make them smell gorgeous and deter moths. Put 4 drops of oil onto a cotton wool ball and place behind the heater or radiator in winter. Drops can also be used with the humidi-fier.

The Kitchen Unseen dangers lurk here so make your kitchen safer, hygienic and aromatic! Oils are a real pleasure to use, with the bonus of leaving the air smelling delightfully fresh and clean. The least expensive oils which come into their own in the kitchen are lemon, ce-darwood tea-tree and petitgrain choose any 2-3 oils which give you the aroma you prefer, and blend 3-6 drops in a basin of water. I wipe my kitchen side with a cloth rinsed in this mix; if I fancy a woody aroma I will add more drops of cedarwood. A single oil has a dramatic hygienic effect, but a mixture of 2 or 3 oils makes a synergistic blend and more effective mix, and can be blended to a aroma of your choice.

Floors When it comes to washing floors, tea-tree is a must, adding other oils such as petitgrain or Cedarwood to enhance the aroma if you require. Six drops of tea tree plus three drops of one of your chosen oils is adequate for a bucket of water. Remember to wash your floor cloth in boiling water and rinse in water containing five drops of your chosen essen-tial oil.

Ironing To make your ironing smell really fresh, although lavender is a traditional, try adding two drops of lemon and or grapefruit essential oils to a spray bottle of water shake well, lightly spray each item before ironing. Do not be tempted to put essential oils in the wa-ter reservoir of a steam iron as it may eventually craze due to undisolved globules of es-sential oil. Always buy a good quality unadulterated oil, so that you are getting all the properties. Vanilla Moon sell a range of pure essential oils, as do many health shops.

If you would like anymore information about oils please visit our website www.vanillamoon.biz or email:[email protected] with your questions.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.
