Merry Christmas to all our customers old and new

10 Years of promoting local business!

As well as celebrating Christmas we are also celebrating ten years of the FVD! I really don’t have any idea of where the time has gone but there have been a lot of changes along the way for me (as I expect for most people) and I have found the Directory a reassuring constant in my life . Having moved house several times and experienced an unhappy mar-riage and ultimate divorce, my work really did keep me focused until the gloom had lifted and I found happiness once again through marriage (just last year) to my lovely husband. If there is one thing guaranteed in life it’s that it will be constantly changing and fortunately not always in such big ways as those I’ve just mentioned! With that in mind I wanted to say an especially big thank you to those businesses that have been advertising with us since we began and think that the fact they are still with us means that the magazine has really worked well for them! Since then we have gained the support of many other local businesses who still continue to advertise so thank you to all of you and an especially big vote of appreciation to the following for stay-ing the course over the last ten years!

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Christmas comes but once a year and whatever way

you look at it, it's a special season in lots of ways. On the one hand, there's all the Christmas festivities, on the other, the weather can be brutal and it's open season for coughs and colds. We've therefore come up with some seasonal, healthy and fun DIYs, which you can use to treat yourself or give as gifts.

Frankincense, Lavender and Pine Room Fragrance For this you will need a carrier oil. Since this is meant for use as a room fragrance rather than going on the skin, any unscented (or mildly scented) vegetable oil would do. Sunflow-er oil is a good choice as it is both affordable and widely available. The rule of thumb is to use three drops of essential oil to each 10ml of carrier oil and it is important to measure this as essential oils are very strong and have to be used diluted. Please also note, it's three drops in total rather than three drops of each oil, so if you're making a 10ml bottle of this blend, use one drop of each oil and so on. Frankincense is very soothing, lavender is gently uplifting and pine is invigorating. As a menthol fragrance it's also a decongestant so good for stuffy noses and it has anti-bacterial properties so it helps to give battling immune sys-tems a boost.

Ginger, Nutmeg and Sweet Orange Bath Salts You can use any type of salt for this and you can also mix in a small quantity of bicar-bonate of soda. As a guideline, for each 100g of carrier base use 80-100g salt and 0-20g bicarbonate of soda. For every 100g of base you will need a maximum of 1ml of essential oil, which is about 20 drops, again this is in total rather than per oil. Ginger and nutmeg are both good for the digestion (after all that Christmas food) and the respiratory system. Nut-meg is also good for the blood circulation. Sweet orange is an all-round tonic and antisep-tic. All of these oils have positive benefits from an emotional perspective too. Using them in a bath is great because all the steam really helps get the oils moving and inhaled, but if you only have a shower, or want to give this as a gift to someone who does, you can use the same combination in a carrier oil to make a skin moisturiser. Since it will be going on the skin, you might want to look at sweet almond or a ready-made massage oil base, but sun-flower oil is also a perfectly reasonable choice. Use the ratios as for the room burner oil.

Sandalwood, Black Pepper and Tea Tree Body Scrub It's important to exfoliate in winter (and follow up with a good moisturiser). You can cre-ate a great body scrub using sugar as a base and in the same ratios as described for the bath salts. Sandalwood is great for the skin, soothing and cleaning it. It's also good for dealing with coughs. Black pepper is antioxidant and antibacterial, which is good for the body as a whole. It is also good at stimulating the blood circulation and this can be particularly bene-ficial to anyone who suffers from rheumatism or arthritis, especially in winter when symp-toms are often at their worst. Tea tree is a menthol and has very similar qualities to pine. This blend is also a good choice for anyone who feels their get up and go has got up and gone, perfect for use in the shower on dark, cold winter mornings.

These gorgeous essential oil treats are sure to make you feel wonderful, whatever the weather and in a lovely bag, or pretty bottle, tied with a ribbon they make lovely Christ-mas gift.s As with all essential oils keep out of the reach of children and pets and use exter-nally.

It’s not the events of our lives, which necessarily cause the stress response, rather the way we think about and respond to those events. So, even though the event itself is often blamed, it does not have to be the direct cause of the negative and undesirable psychological state that people often refer to as being or feeling stressed.

Each and every anxiety we have is caused by negative thinking. Negative thoughts about the past, present, or future are all accumulated and stored for our minds to process later. Of course, when we reach our limits, things can get out of hand. Local Hypnotherapist, Liane Ulbricht-Kazan comments “what’s important is to address the thought processes surrounding the events of our lives, because in life, we know that things happen, and that’s not always some-thing we can control”.

Brain chemistry and neurological functioning, combined with physiology, and other psychological factors are what combine to cause the kind of state referred to as ‘stress’. But what causes stress to be triggered?

As the imagination is taken over by a cycle of negative thinking, we may perceive things, that aren’t true or that we cannot change anyway. Our different perceptions, backgrounds, emotional resilience and ability to cope play a big role in how stressed we become in certain situations.

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind

There are many factors to consider when determining the external triggers that exist in a person’s life, but it’s often those events, which relate to our health, relation-ships, and security, that we talk about here. Apart from being stressful, the experience is often experienced as depression, anxiety, or even anger.

At the heart of people’s issues, are our understandings and perceptions of the world, and how the interact with it. If you would like help in understanding how you can learn to deal with stress, remain in control of your thoughts and your emotions, then perhaps Hypnotherapy would be right for you.

CHRISTMAS TREE TOP TIPSprovided by Stella Gray of Highfield Garden World

Our Christmas trees are in! Come and choose the perfect tree to bringChristmas to life in your home. From table top treasures to majestic 7 footers,we have a fresh tree to suit everyone. We also offer a lovely selection ofindividual artificial trees. Our Christmas department is a wonderland fullof decorations just waiting to adorn your homes for the festive season andthere are gifts a-plenty to suit all tastes. With plenty of free parking and afantastic, brand new restaurant why not come along to Highfield whereChristmas is made easy? It’s a one-stop Christmas shop!!

Types of Fresh Cut Christmas TreesNorway Spruce (Picea Abies) is the traditional Christmas treewhich was historically grown close by and brought into the houseat Christmas. It has short green needles and that wonderful greatpine scent which will fill the room.

Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) is a Needlefast varietywhich has been introduced to this country in recent years andhas become the most popular variety because it does not dropits needles so readily in the home. It still has the classicChristmas tree shape and has long, soft, dark green needles.

Caring for your tree• Keep your tree outside, in the open, until you are ready to put your tree up and decorate it.• When you bring your tree in, saw a small section off the stump and then place it straight into a water- holding stand or bucket of water (a fresh cut tree

can drink up to 5 litres of water a day).• Try and keep the tree away from a source of direct heat (i.e. a fire or radiator).• Finally, keep giving your tree a drink of water - you will be amazed at what it can drink!

Don’t forget to bring back your fresh cuttree after Christmas to be recycled.

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business.

The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.”

Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM

We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations.

With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book.

But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that so many go unheard.
