EVERYBODY’S GOT A BOOK IN THEM

We’ve printed books on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and even personal books perfect for recording family stories for future generations.

With modern printing methods we can print and produce as few or as many as you would like. We offer advice on how to prepare your book for print or we can design your book for you. We also offer advice on paper, the best binding technique and even marketing your book.

But before we print anything we talk, so if you have a story to tell call David Pealing on 01452 416391 or email [email protected] and let’s make your book a reality.

Eastcombe Gnome Hunt Saturday 2nd & Sunday 3rd July 2016 2.00pm – 5.00pm

We are once again dusting and polishing our gnomes ready to invade the picturesque village of Eastcombe for the 7th annual Gnome Hunt.

The Gnome Hunt is a family event, following a trail around the beautiful village and gardens of Eastcombe to track down hidden gnomes. As well as enjoying the merry art of Gnome spotting, we are very pleased to be able to showcase the delightful houses, gardens and surrounding countryside in Eastcombe.

The event starts at Eastcombe Primary School where there will be stalls and games in the playground and finish at the Village Hall for cream teas - worth a visit even if you don’t plan on hunting down any gnomes!

The trail is very pushchair friendly with ice creams available en-route. Participants are invited to find the gnomes, collect the clues and solve the puzzle to win a gnome to take home and keep!

The Gnome Hunt is organised by Eastcombe School Association to raise funds for the small village primary school. Last year the hunt raised over £3200 which was spent on educational outdoor equipment to enhance outside learning. We welcomed over 1000 Gnome hunters last year to our lovely village and we hope to exceed that this year!

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

When you think of hugs and laughter what do you see? Is it an expression of happiness or joy? These two things may just seem like something we all do on a day to day basis, but the truth is that both hugging and laughing can have a real impact on the way you think and feel. Here we have some of the best reasons that you should crack out a smile and grab the person closest to you for a bit of hugging and laughter therapy (just make sure that they want to be hugged or you could have an awkward situation on your hands). A boost Oxytocin is important to us at it reverses those feelings of anger, isolation and loneliness and hugging is an instant booster to your oxytocin levels. Lowering blood pressure Laughter is known to reduce your blood pressure and lower blood pressure reduces your chances of stroke or heart attacks. Make it linger If you take the time to really enjoy a super long hug then you will see a rise in your serotonin. Serotonin brings your mood up and leads you to feel happier! Vanilla Moon say always be the last one to leave a hug.

Reduce your stress Laughter is known to take down the stress hor-mones that your body produces. This in turn cuts anxiety and stress which can only have a positive impact on the way you feel! Enjoy yourself Both hugging and laughter is a great way to let go and just enjoy the moment that you are in. Hugging gives you the chance to show love and be loved and laughter reminds you that no matter how hard things can be, that there are happy times just around the corner. Give your immune system a helping hand Feeling like a cold is on its way? Then pop on a funny film. Laughter activates T Cells within your body which are your immune systems first defences against illness. Perhaps this is where the saying that laughter is the best medicine came from? Laughter, hugging and smiling are all ways to improve your mental wellbeing and get yourself on the path to feeling great. Best of all, none of them cost a thing. So take the time to laugh loud, hug hard and really relish every minute of your life!

According to a 2009 report by the Chief Medical Officer for England: “Each year over five million people in the United Kingdom develop chronic pain, but only two-thirds will recover.” This month’s guide looks at pain, and how Changes Welcome Hypnotherapy can help those suffering from such debilitating conditions.

What is pain?Pain is a signal. It is the body’s way of telling the brain that a specific area needs attention. We don’t perceive pain as either black or white. It is a continuum, and we can experience comfort to a greater or lesser extent. However, there are always conscious and subconscious factors involved that can either help or worsen the pain sensations.

Pain is transmitted along different types of fibres; ‘C-fibres’ for chronic pain (e.g throbbing, aching, burning, cold, soreness, itching, tingling, numbness). ‘A-fibres’ for acute pain. Signals travel much faster along A-fibres (e.g sharp pain). So, if we burn our hands, that pain signal will override any other aching pain felt prior.

Types of PainThere are two different types of pain; acute (or short-term pain) and chronic (or long-term persistent pain). Of the two, acute pain signals are useful, as they let us know that something has happened and needs attention. E.g in the case of an injury. However, it can be argued that chronic pain signals are redundant. The issue is going to be on-going, and we don’t need to be constantly reminded of it!

A User’s Guide to a Healthy Mind

Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy & Coaching & Book an Initial Consultation

However, the fastest messages are transmitted via ‘Special A-fibres’ and these take precedence over everything else. These are sensations of pressure, touch and vibration, which is why rubbing or massaging an area is a temporary pain relief. It’s a competing counter-stimulation. In addition to A-fibres there are neu-rotransmitters such as Serotonin, Noradrenaline, Endorphins and Enkephalins. When we produce a constant flow of these we interrupt the pain message. In effect we are then gaining control over the pain.

To find out more and to understand how with Hypnotherapy it can be possible to override persistent pain using the right kind of positive thought, actions and inter-actions, get in touch with Liane or Sam at Changes Welcome today.....

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business.

The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.

Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.

“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter

how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.”

Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.

“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”

Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

R und the Garden

Look at the Paris catwalks and you might wonder what on earth they have to do with everyday fashion: look at Chelsea and you might say the same thing about gardening.

Yet though Paris fashions might seem outlandish, they push certain trends, which, in a watered-down version, end up in high-street shops. Likewise, though many of Chelsea’s show gardens are fantasy pieces demonstrating outrageous ideas the horticultural trends on display soon find their way into our own more modest gardens.

For example; did you know that bonsai specimens and topiary gardens were introduced at Chelsea in 1913? Rock gardens were introduced in the 1940’s and decking in the eighties. All of these can now be bought in garden centres up and down the land.

And who can forget the water feature, courtesy of James Dyson, in which the water ran uphill? I haven’t seen one for sale in my local garden centre yet but give it time!

Chelsea isn’t just about high fashion though; it reflects environmental trends too. Last year hosepipes were banned in the Great Pavilion and many of the gardens showcased drought-tolerant planting schemes.

Chelsea draws 157,000 visitors each year. For the past two years it’s been held over five days instead of four and this looks set to continue. Chelsea organisers have

wisely decided not to increase the number of visitors with the result that it feels less cramped.

Fewer crowds is one good reason to visit.

Another is the sheer quantity

of new plants, and varieties of plants, on display to the general public for the first time.

Chelsea really is window shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world.

And if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins.

The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. So what should you choose?

If it were me I’d want something special; a reminder of my visit. I’d go for a species which I know would grow in my garden, but an unusual variety, not available in my local garden centre. In my case it would probably be an unusual lavender or fuchsia.

Choose carefully and you could have a little piece of Chelsea gold adorning your plot for many years to come.

Yet in over 100 years of animal experiments, we still don’t have a cure for these diseases. Why?Many human diseases do not exist in animals and the way an animal’s body deals with them is very different to the way our bodies do.

The good news is that advanced research methods are already replacing animal experiments with successful results and the DHT has been a driving force in funding these.

Village and Community Agent Scheme

The Village and Community Agent scheme was set up in2006 to provide a signposting and support service for older people in rural villages in Gloucestershire. It started as a pilot scheme and has continued to grow in success and now covers urban areas including StroudGloucestershire Village and Community Agents bridge the gap between the local community and statutory and voluntary organisations able to offer help or support. They provide high quality information, promote access to a wide range of services, and identify unmet need in their communities. Village and Community Agents can visit people in their own homes and there is no time restriction. The service is aimed primarily at the over 50s but also offers support to vulnerable people in the county. Village and Community Agents offer an assisted signposting service by making direct contact with the agencies, statutory or voluntary, able to provide the service they need. Examples of the service offered are:

• would you like any help to keep your home warm?• would you like a free home safety check from Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue? • would you like to know more about adaptations to your home, which may help you

cope better with a disability?• are you worried by bogus callers or nuisance telephone calls?• are you feeling lonely and would like to meet other people? • would you like to help other people by volunteering for a local organisation? • Are you receiving all of the pensions and benefits you are entitled to?

The Village and Community Agent for the town of Stroud is Anne Robinson and her mobile number is 07534 064 175. Alternatively, you can also email her [email protected] Please be aware that as she works part-time, you may have to leave a message but she will contact you as soon as she is ableto. Alternatively, you can contact Gloucestershire Rural Community Council direct on 01452 528491 who will be able to help you further. See http://www.villageagents.org.uk/

Village and Community agents have started hosting a drop-in/surgery in Stroud Library on the third Thursday of each month between 10.30 am and 12.30pm. Anne Robinson (Village and Community Agent for Stroud) or Angela King (Village Agent for Cainscross, Randwick, Whiteshill and Ruscombe, Rodborough, Thrupp and Chalford.) will be available to discuss the service.

Listen to what users of the service have to say ….

‘I think the whole Village Agent Scheme is invaluable and I am very grateful to the GRCC for bringing us this service. It is wonderful - a godsend’.

‘They are always so helpful. Any worries I have, I know that the Village Agent will be able to sort them out’.

‘We have found the service really excellent, it seems to go above and beyond expectations’.

‘Pivotal to finding the services we needed to remain independent’.

Divorce We all know about the emotional pain of breaking up but most of us know less about the financial pitfalls.

It’s essential to seek financial advice. Time dedicated to sorting out money matters in the initial stages of a divorce can save a lot of financial heartbreak later.

You need to understand your partner’s financial position. Hopefully they’ll co-operate but if they become angry or evasive then a solicitor can help to get to the bottom of the situation.

On the subject of solicitors, don’t be afraid to consult one for an initial assessment. It may be expensive but it is generally money well spent, even if you ultimately decided to save money by doing things yourselves.

A good solicitor will provide you with a document setting out the estimated costs. This should be reviewed and updated periodically.

Solicitors are trained to look out for potential pitfalls, both immediate and long term. For example: if you have joint bank accounts and / or credit cards you are jointly and severally liable for any direct debits or debts incurred while using them. This means that a bank or credit card company can pursue either partner (or both) for settlement of any debts.

Also, if a bank account is held in joint names either partner can remove some or even all

of the available funds without permission of the other. Also a bank can freeze an account at the request of either party if there is a dispute.

Any debts held solely in your partner’s name are not recoverable from you BUT beware; if your mortgage is in your joint names and your partner cannot make their loan payments the loan company may seek to have the house sold in order to recover their money.

Pensions are very valuable assets indeed. If you have one it needs to be protected. If your partner has one, you may have a claim on part of its value.

If there are school or university fees involved it is vital that these are safe-guarded from the outset. Both partners should agree that whatever their differences the children must come first.

It’s pretty obvious that matters can become very complicated very quickly. Solicitors are trained to negotiate such

financial tangles. Seek appropriate advice early and even if extricating yourself emotionally is difficult, financially you can be free.

A trained mediator can explain what information is required and you can discuss who is best able to obtain valuations and statements See details opposite for Compass Mediation
