19 year old orca Valentin died last month at Marineland. This young whale was born in the park and spent his whole life in captivity. It’s now even more urgent that Marineland release its remaining orcas, before more animals like Valentin lose their lives in the deplorable conditions at the marine park. Deadly flash floods hit the French Riviera in October – and the casualties include numerous animals who were imprisoned at Marineland, Eu-rope’s biggest marine park. Rays, sharks, turtles and other fish have already died, and marine mam-mals such as orcas were in critical danger because their tanks were flooded with muddy water and the oxygenation and filtration systems had broken down. This dire situation should never have occurred. Animals don’t belong in tiny concrete tanks, and if the orcas and other animals had been in their natural ocean homes they would have been able to swim out of the mud-dy water in which they’re currently trapped and to safety. These social, emotional and intelligent animals who were forcibly bred for profit have been suffering since the day they were born and now their lives are in imminent danger as they try to survive in a pit of muddy water. How many more examples do we need to see that captivity is wrong and cruel? These social, emotional, intelligent animals have suffered their en-tire lives, all because they are being held captive for profit and greed. RIP. Valentin
To those of you who may be thinking of visiting or taking your children to Marineland or similar places, please read on….

A Peek into the Past On November 5th 1991 the body of the millionaire newspaper publisher, Robert Maxwell, was found in the sea off the coast of Tenerife. The publisher had been cruising in the Canary Isles aboard his luxury yacht, the Ghislaine.
He was thought to have gone overboard early in the morning but was not reported missing until he failed to answer a telephone several hours later. Two helicopters, rescue launches and a dozen ships assisted in the search.
Maxwell was born into relative poverty in Czechoslovakia but became one of Britain’s richest men, buying the Daily Mirror Newspaper in 1984. He was an abrasive character whose business methods were often criticized. Indeed, after his death it emerged that the Mirror Group's debts vastly outweighed its assets and £440m was missing from the company's pension funds.
In 1996 Maxwell’s sons, Kevin and Ian along with another man, Larry Trachtenberg, were cleared of conspiracy to defraud Mirror Group pensioners after an eight month trial.
In 2001 the Department of Trade and Industry released a report into the Maxwell affair which said "primary responsibility" for the collapse of the Maxwell business empire lay with its founder.
30,000 Mirror Group pensioners mounted a three-year campaign for compensation. Their funds were largely recovered thanks to a £100m government payout and a £276m out-of-court settlement with City institutions and the remnants of Robert Maxwell's media group.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although
that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and
Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A bad website, or no online presence at all, could be costing your company potential business.
The internet is the first thing most people consult when they’re looking for a service or product and if your company is not online, or has a website that looks out of date or isn’t accessible to mobile phones and tablets, then a business opportunity could quickly be lost.
Computancy has had a busy year building websites for businesses that want their information to be easily accessible on all the latest devices. Drawing on over 10 years’ experience in website design, search engine optimisation and web hosting services to assist small and medium-sized businesses in Gloucestershire and beyond.
“A website is now such an important part of a business that your customers simply expect you to have one,” says Computancy’s owner Nick Warner. “It is the first place they will look when searching for your goods, products or services and no matter
how pristine your premises and staff are, if this isn’t reflected in your website they may go elsewhere.”
Since April the search engine Google has actively penalised websites that are not mobile and tablet friendly, explains Nick. “Most websites more than 3 years old were not designed for the modern mobile ways of viewing them” he says.
“Our service doesn’t stop at building your website. It needs to be hosted on a fast webserver so that it is always available and we have secure and reliable webservers in London’s Docklands. Then it needs to be optimised so your customers can quickly find you on Google or Bing, and we offer flexible SEO plans for all budgets”
Based locally in Bisley, Computancy offer a full range of web design services, including graphic design and copywriting support and take pride in undertaking work quickly and efficiently and at competitive prices. ”

Garden View National Tree Week runs from 28th November to December 6th
I’ve always loved trees: their stature, their beauty, the detail of their leaves, flowers and bark; they add texture to a landscape and character to a garden. One of the loveliest sounds in the world is that of wind-rustled leaves. I especially like the permanence of trees; the fact that a sapling I plant now will probably outlive me and bring pleasure to my children long after I’ve gone. The Tree Council hope that a million trees will be planted during National Tree Week. That’s a huge number and probably explains why they sneaked in those extra days when no-one was watching!
Trees are our friends and here’s why... Trees produce oxygen We couldn’t exist without them. A mature tree produces as much oxygen as ten adults inhale in a year. Trees are natural air filters They absorb airborne pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide and reduce heat.
Trees clean the soil They absorb dangerous pollutants from the soil, either storing them or altering them into a less harmful form. This process is called phytoremediation.
Trees ‘lock up’
carbon Trees produce their own food by a process called photosynthesis. This involves absorbing carbon dioxide, which is one of the so-called greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. The carbon is ‘stored’ as wood and therefore can cause no further harm to the environment.
Trees control noise pollution Once mature they muffle urban noise as effectively as stone walls! Trees fight soil erosion Their roots bind the earth and their leaves break the force of wind and rain on the soil. They also
reduce water run-off and sediment deposition after storms. Considering all this, how could you not plant a tree during National Tree Week?

Where were you born and brought up? I was born in Hammersmith and lived in London for the first five years of my life. My parents then decided to pursue the coun-try life and we relocated to a small rural town in Shropshire. My two brothers and I have fond memo-ries of fishing, camping and exploring the woods and green fields of Shropshire as children. What did you do when you left school? After completing A levels in Design, PE & Geography I had a 1 year break in education and moved into a shared house in Worcester with fellow musicians to focus on developing our rock band “Mexican Stand-off”. Sadly working 40 hour weeks in Sainsburys warehouse didn’t leave us much time for any band practice and Mexican Standoff fell by the wayside before we had even really found our feet. The guitar was hung up for a while and I decided to undertake a degree at Worcester Univer-sity studying Environmental Science and Physical Geography. An inter-esting few years followed. During university life I developed a new hob-by in mountain biking. It had become something of an addiction with the adrenalin from the “close shaves” in combination with the aerobic fitness benefits appealing to me most. A year working in Whistler, Canada for 1 year followed.

It was an action packed year with most of my free time spent hurt-ling down snowy slopes on my snowboard, having heart stopping encounters with black bears while mountain biking and swimming in stunning glacier fed blue lakes surrounded in snow capped moun-tains
What led you into the business you have now? I spent 5 years building up as much experience and training work-ing as a tree surgeon and a woodland manager in Somerset. It be-came very clear to myself that I wanted to run my own business and do things my way. Treeation – Tree Surgery & Woodland Man-agement was formed in 2010 after we relocated from Bristol to Stroud. The challenges of starting a business, the risk taking and freedom appealed strongly to me. Any interests or hobbies? My main interests in life are music, natural history and environmen-tal conservation. I spend a good amount of my free time camping, walking, biking and foraging in the Cotwolds. My hobbies include doing a martial art called “ki aikido” and playing the guitar. What of your home life?
I live in Stroud with my wonderful family. My wife is a yoga teacher and we have a beautiful 5 year old daughter. My wife is Spanish so most of our holidays are spent lounging around on hot sunny beaches and eating amazing Spanish food in Cadiz where her fam-ily are. Plans for the future? To keep building up Treeation Tree Surgery & Woodland Manage-ment especially focusing on arboricultural consultancy and develop-ing our woodfuel business that deals with eco-friendly, locally sourced kindling and firewood.

In the context of emotional, psychological and physical health and wellbeing, it’s what we tell ourselves, which really affects us in our daily lives. Our reactions to situations are both conscious and sub-conscious, and the patterns and behaviors we follow determine a huge part of our overall experience of the world. But what do we mean by that?
There are essentially two parts to the human brain, which we can usefully talk about here: the intellectual sensible part and the primitive emotional part. When we operate from the intellectual brain, we generally get things right in life. The primitive part, however, is basically only there for our survival, and not our well-being. If what we did yesterday ensured our survival, then we’re encouraged to do it again. Any deviation from the current held ‘truth’ will not be accept-ed without a fight. So, it’s easy to see how when we’re operating from the primitive brain, we may react to life in an anxious, angry, or depressed way, as this evokes an emotional memory, rather than a narrative one.
Well, firstly we must consider how information is stored in the brain. A useful metaphor for this is the filing cabinet. In fact, countless filing cabinets containing all the information we have ever received about anything, are stored in the subconscious. In this way, any new information received is matched with the truths we hold, in order to determine whether and where it may be filed. In other words, we learn and store information through association.
Where many people then struggle is that every negative thought we have is converted into anxiety, which adds to our stresses. It’s not the life’s events, which cause the perception of crisis, but an increase in the primitive brain’s dominance. When our general stress level is high, then we are most definitely encouraged to see the worst-case scenario, which only ads to distortions in our view of life. So, we have to get back into the intellectual part of the brain if we want to get back in control of our selves and our lives, and this can be helped very effectively using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

Fighting winter colds the natural way.
By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon
As the darker nights close in and winter fast approaches the likelihood of catching a cold is a certainty and the first thing most people do when the sneezing begins is to head straight for the medicine cupboard. But how many of us would know how to fight a cold if the medicine cupboard was banished from our homes? There are a surprising number of natural ways in which winter colds can be sent packing and below are some of the most popular ones, including
Chicken Soup Chicken Soup is the ultimate comfort food and for decades its healing abilities has been debated by everyone and their mother. A bowl of soup does not take much ef-fort to eat and warms you inside and out, and will keep your body ticking over until you feel like you can face a proper home cooked meal. Rest When we start to overdo things our body tends to give us signs that we need to slow down and one of the most common signs is the start of a cold. So when the sniffles begin and your body starts to feel a little off kilter treat yourself to some extra ‘me’ time and have a well-earned rest. Even going to bed an extra half an hour earlier for a week can make all the difference and stop you reaching for those tissues.
Hot drinks Drinking a mug of something hot and steaming not only soothes the nasty feeling in your nose and throat but it also helps prevent dehydration. Try and limit caffeine and stick to hot soups, herbal teas and even a mug of just plain old hot water to help you fight the first signs of a cold. If a mug of hot water is not your cup of tea, try adding some honey and lemon.
Keep warm Keeping warm is a good way to keep a cold at bay but there is no need to bundle yourself up as if you are off to the Antarctic. Try layering up so if you get too hot or cold you can either take off or put on depending on your temperature. Taking a nice warm bath or a slightly longer shower will help to alleviate aches and pains as well as warming that poorly body up.
Steam Having a blocked up nose can cause all sorts of other ailments such as headache and earache. One of the best ways to clear congested nasal airways is to use steam inha-lation. This can be easily achieved with a bowl of hot water and a towel but make sure you place the bowl on a solid surface as you don’t want to increase the risk of scolding yourself. Alternatively running a hot shower can also have the desired effect and might be a little less risky too.

Corinium Care rated ‘outstanding’ and ‘good’
Staff at Corinium Care are delight-ed that the company has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission for its caring service. The live-in care agency was rated ‘Good’ in the four further categories designed to test whether the service is safe, effective, responsive and well-led. The company’s overall CQC rating was ‘Good’.
Managing Director Clare Janik welcomed the report. “It’s excellent news that the very high standards we seek to achieve have been recognised at such a level,” she said. “Getting an outstanding rating in the care category is brilliant, and a tribute to our wonderful team of carers and support staff who always go the extra mile for our clients.” The award-winning company provides live-in care for elderly people, those with dementia and young adults with physical and learning disabilities. Founded in 1995, it has more than 700 registered carers as well as 17 head office staff, and recruitment offices in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The inspector spent three days with Corinium Care and talked to carers, clients and their relatives as well as to the staff in Nailsworth in the company’s first CQC inspection. His 13-page report said clients, most of whom are frail and elderly, “received a caring and compassionate service from people who knew them well”. “Staff treated people with dig-nity and respect. People were involved in planning the care and support they received. Confidentiality and people’s privacy was respected,” he said.
“Relatives were all positive regarding the service. Relatives confirmed their requests re-garding care staff had been sought and accommodated. This showed the views of the per-son receiving the service were respected and acted on.
“Staff respected people’s privacy and maintained their dignity”, he said. “People’s needs were at the centre of the service provided, with staff knowing each person’s likes and dis-likes.”
On the subject of safety, he said recruitment arrangements were “robust” and people were supported by sufficient staff with appropriate skills. “Relatives we spoke with said they felt their family member was kept safe by care staff,” he said.
The service was effective because staff had been trained to meet people’s needs. “New staff received a thorough induction . . . and staff received support from managers through effective supervision and performance appraisal.”
Other elements praised included carer training, the skill and experience of carers and the vision and values which permeated the entire company.

Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School is a highly successful 11-18 mixed comprehensive school with a continuous history dating back to its foundation in 1384. We are tremendously proud of the positive rela-tionships and culture which are evident throughout the school every day. The school provides young people with a safe, secure and stimu-lating environment in which they learn with confidence and enjoyment. All members of the school community strive to ensure that each stu-dent makes the best progress of which they are capable so that not only do students gain superb examination results but they also devel-
op the personal qualities neces-sary for success in further or higher education, in employ-ment and in adult life.
The examination results achieved by students at this comprehensive school are ex-cellent. 73% of students achieved 5 or more passes at grades A* to C (including Eng-
lish and mathematics) in summer 2015 and initial data from the DfE shows very good progress statistics from Key Stage 2 to GCSE. At A level, our 2015 results were outstanding with 41% of the entries result-ing in grades A or A* and 69% resulting in grades A* to B. These qualifications enable our students to have the widest possible range of opportunities. Nearly 90% of Year 13 moved on to university this year, including many securing places on the most competitive cours-es.
