Hello to all our readers, advertisers and contributors! Lovely time of the year this with plenty of bank holidays to look forward to and hopefully lots of sunshine!

Spring is always a good time to start something new and on page 32 Zoe Warner writes about just that and en-courages us to try something different whatever our age-it’s never too late!

Our centre pages feature an article by Julian Jones of Water 21 who writes about the effect that intensive farming has had (and continues to have) on our soil and how this in turn affects our water source. He also explains the benefits of hydropower and the difference this could make. All good food for thought and importantly-action!

Have a lovely May! Catherine

...we make saving money perfectly clear...

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Eastcombe Gnome Hunt 21st & 22nd June 2014 2.00pm – 5.00pm

The picturesque village of Eastcombe is set to be invaded by gnomes once again this year for the annual Gnome Hunt.

The Gnome Hunt is a family event, following a trail around the beautiful village and gardens of Eastcombe to track down hidden gnomes. There will also be an optional section venturing into the stunning Toadsmoor Valley for the more adventurous!

The event starts and finishes at Eastcombe Primary School where there will be stalls, games and cream teas – worth a visit even if you don’t plan on hunting down any gnomes!

The village section is pushchair friendly with ice creams available en-route. Participants are invited to find the gnomes, collect the clues and solve the puzzle to win a gnome to take home and keep! Finishers of the cross country trail through the valley and woodland will receive a gnome medal!

The Gnome Hunt is organised by Eastcombe School Association and we are hoping to top our record takings last year of £2,300! This money helped to buy new toys, furniture and ICT equipment for our small village primary school.

While I was pleased to receive Mr Maisey's apology in your January edi-tion '(sorry Mr Heathcliffe)' I must point out that there was no suggestion from me that his was a lone voice in the wilderness - only that he wrote as if his WAS a lone voice. His highjacking of Mr David Attenborough in apparent support of his world-view is a clear attempt to curry favour with readers of your magazine. I generally share his appreciation of Mr Atten-borough's position on ecological matters, although I do find some of his (Attenborough's) natural history output disturbing - not least the filmed behaviour of monkeys in the wild, being as it is often deeply repellent and frequently disgusting. I prefer his treatment of gorillas, which are filmed invisibly lurking in the undergrowth and occasionally shaking the branch-es of trees while remaining decently out of sight - or perhaps I am confus-ing this with his film 'King Kong', but I am not at all sure that was a real monkey -it looked more like a man in a monkey-suit to me, but (unlike the religious scribbler Hopkins) I am no expert in these matters. I am further disappointed in Mr Maisey's refusal to provide any advice on the matter of my son's behaviour, being as it is regularly as appalling as that of Mr Attenborough's monkeys, and given that I took the trouble to seek his opinion as an 'expert' on the behaviour and morals of the youth of today I was entitled to expect better from him. There's no point in offer-ing opinionated verbiage in your columns while ignoring the expressed concerns of right-thinking people such as myself and Mrs Heathcliffe. Apologies for the delay in my response - I have been away on holiday with my 'secretary' in Barbados, engaged in matters that needn't concern you.

Lawrence Heathcliffe Stroud

An alternative point of view?

Note from the Editor: No one can accuse us of not printing all points of view (hopefully this one is taking a rather ‘tongue in cheek’ approach) but we would like to hear from you if you have anything interesting or humorous to add to the column. P.S. Who are you Mr Heathcliffe?

The Stroud Lighting Company is offering last minute, end of Winter Season discounts at the Showroom in Fromeside, off Dr Newton’s Way in Stroud.

The Showroom is the most comprehensive of its kind in the Stroud area and the displays and catalogues have recently been updated. The displays have been im-proved to demonstrate even more working examples particularly in the field of LED and low energy light fittings and lamps.

The current trend is very much focused on saving energy and keeping costs down. Although there are exciting changes in all areas of lighting the Staff real-ise that this can be daunting for Customers wishing to renew or upgrade their existing installations.

Garden lighting is becoming very fashionable and adds another dimension to a garden that has been lovingly created. A visit to Stroud Lighting Company can make this dream become a not too expensive reality.

They can also provide assistance with choosing the right lighting to obtain the desired effect in a particular location. A call to David Maltby the MD, to arrange an appointment is all it takes to use this service. A nominal charge is made de-pending on the amount of time involved but this cost is usually redeemable against any following purchase of light fittings.

The Company is part of Severn Electrical Wholesale Ltd. It is an independent, family run business and it is now in its 28th year of helping the people of Stroud and the surrounding areas to solve their lighting problems.

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing

Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of

The Stroud Valleys sit on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment; five val-leys, reaching out like an outstretched hand. A hive of activity in the early industrial revolution – power from fast flowing rivers combined with sheep farming to create the first woollen industry. The rivers still flow; but no waterpower? Not cost effective? Well yes it is cost effective with the right turbine! The kind of good clean power that we need to combat climate change but here's the rub - to use the water you need a licence from the Environment Agency who will charge you a pretty penny, and constrict your use so it is NOT worth while. Why? Because they have a monopoly on the water use and wish to keep it that way. The old widespread livestock and rotational farming has been replaced during the past century by arable farming, mainly cereals and oilseed rape. These single crops degrade the soil. and help fill our watercourses with topsoil. Modern chemical farming does not maintain the natural bacterial soil bal-ance; large areas of farmland around Stroud (and elsewhere) cannot re-tain the rain water increasing flood risk. Farmers follow governmental poli-cy; they assume these policies are properly thought out and properly reg-ulated – they are not. With ever increasing atmospheric levels of CO2 you might think that the level of carbon retained in the soil (humus) would be a prime considera-tion in our farming methods – it is not! The complex microbial soil pro-cesses that store atmospheric carbon as humus are severely damaged by chemicals and ploughing; with the consequence that soil erosion in some areas around Stroud approaches 70 tonnes/Ha/year.

After more than 60 years of chemical farming in the Cotswolds this soil damage has led to increased rain run-off (more flooding) and reduced aq-uifer recharge (with lower normal or base river flows). this is not helped by the authorities bad water management We need to use biological farming methods which restore soil carbon now! Huge advances have been made in understanding farming biology. A return to older established rotational methods with less cereals, more livestock and vegetables, that can easily maintain land productivity, whilst rebuilding soil carbon and retaining water is long overdue.

Water power and healthy soil-the key to our future? By Julian Jones-Water 21

We can grow more nutritious food and create local employment.

While addressing our soil problems we should be encouraging small hy-dro-power dams; already some of the cheapest electricity comes from our few remaining working watermills. Cheap clean hydropower has many benefits, from maintaining river water levels and reducing flooding to protecting and enriching our biodiversity.

HIGHFIELD GARDEN WORLD HOSTS CELEBRATION LAUNCH EVENT Businesspeople from all over Gloucestershire came together at a Pimm’s and canapés event to celebrate the launch of Highfield Garden World’s new £2.5m retail and restaurant devel-opment in Whitminster.

The event was in association with Barclays, who partly financed the project, and many of the guests had been invited because of their direct involvement in the development.

Highfield worked with a number of independent local businesses during the year-long project, and the restaurant continues to source food and drink from local suppliers including Winstones icecreams, Frocester Fayre and Soho Coffee Company.

The event took part in the new landmark restau-rant at Highfield, from which guests were able to enjoy far-reaching views across the countryside.

Do you find yourself in the same stagnant routines, never doing anything new? Do you often here yourself saying “Oh no, I’m far too old for that!” a little too often? Do you want to try something completely different and exciting? Why not use the changing of the seasons as a chance to try something new in your life that will revamp your image and revitalise you in all aspects of your life. From trying out a new hobby to taking up a new career path, it is never too late to get on board with something you’ve never done before. The opportunities and experiences that become apparent from taking new things on will benefit you no end. Below we have listed a few helpful tips to help you along your way to a whole new you:

Take Up a New Hobby Ever fancied playing the Guitar but never had the time to do it? How about tap dancing or salsa classes to dance your way to a fitter body? If you are a little older and the children have all grown up now is the time to take up a passion that you have been meaning to but never found the time for until now. Make the most of these years and give yourself some real ME time, as like so many parents your interests often get put on hold and this the time to make up for that. New Career? Again it’s never too late to re-train and try a totally different career. Go for something off the wall or a job you’ve always thought about but was too scared to try. Many of the therapists that have started at Therapies4forces and other such organizations have returned to college to train in complementary therapies have done so later in life, sometimes they have retrained as a hobby, which finally turns into a permanent job. We are very lucky here in Stroud, to have such a fan-tastic complementary therapy department at the local college. Why not speak to the department and have a taster session? You can get into so many other ca-reers this way, so don’t be stuck in a boring, unfulfilling job when you really do not have to – no matter what your age!

It might sound a little drastic uprooting your life to a new house, city or even country – but a change is as a good as a rest as they always say! Why not try Spain for a year? Or visit somewhere you’ve always dreamed of for a few months such as India or Africa? Not only will you feel re-energized by your new surroundings but you’ll get the chance to make a whole new circle of friends and engage in a complete new range of activities as well. So go on-just do it!

A Peek into the Past On 6th May 1994 the Queen and France's President Francois Mitterrand formally opened the Channel Tunnel during two elaborate ceremonies in France and Britain. The tunnel took eight years and billions of pounds to build. It is actually three tunnels: one northbound, one southbound and an access tunnel for maintenance and emergencies. The undersea part covers 37.5Km and runs an average of 50m under the seabed. The Queen travelled from London's Waterloo station through the tunnel by high-speed Eurostar passenger train. President Mitterrand's train travelled from

Paris' Gard du Nord via Lille.

The two locomotives met nose to nose then the two heads of state cut red, white and blue ribbons simultaneously to the sound of their respective national anthems.

The tunnel construction ran up huge debts. It cost £10bn

to build, which was more than double the original forecast made in 1987.

It has been dogged by controversy over its financial losses and its occasional role as a conduit for illegal entry to the UK. However no-one can deny the technical achievement of the project or the sheer convenience of the Eurostar service.
