Five Valleys Hedgehog & Bird Rescue was founded in 2012 by Kate Goacher and offically opened on October 12th 2013. We are a small non speciest rescue situated in the small village of Thrupp, Gloucestershire.Our aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and release native wild hedgehogs and birds. Although we mainly deal with hedgehogs and birds, we never turn any species away. We have seen mice, squirrels, rabbits, slow worms, a bat, even a bearded dragon! come through our doors since we have been open.

We are coming up to our busiest time of the year, the 'orphan season'. At this time of year we get many calls from concerned members of the public about baby birds, mainly fledglings. These are fully feathered with a stubby tail, they are not yet able to fly, but can run & hop, and are expert hiders. These MUST be left alone as the parents are often near by feeding & protecting them as much as possible. Fledglings get highly stressed when in a captive situation and will not take hand feeds so we always advise to leave them alone as it is a essential part of their development.If you are concerned then please watch from a far, the parents should come back and feed it. Only if you are 100% sure it has been orphaned then pick it up & call us. If you find a hatchling (bald, eyes closed & pink) or a nestling (feathers still in pin, they are unable to walk but

The early years I was born at Stroud Maternity Hospital and was the youngest of two sons to my late parents Joyce and Bill. We lived as a very close family in Rodborough until I left home at the age of twenty one. The only upheaval we made as a family was when at the age of five my brother Mark along with our parents moved from 76 Chandos Road…...to number 82. I can still remember friends and neighbours wheeling sack trucks full of our worldly possessions downhill (thankfully) to our new home.

My youth was spent largely outside as I was vey much a sports mad child. It was never an issue pushing our bikes up through Kingscourt and on past Rodborough Fort to the Lonely Tree where the jumpers became goal posts for endless hours of fun. I have recently pushed my mountain bike on that same route and do not remember it being that steep!

Your memories of school I enjoyed school and the only shock I had was when I realised that I wasn't going to play rugby for England and might have to find my own way in life after all ! ! It all began at Kingscourt School until Gastrells School was built and after a brief spell there I moved on to Highwood School in Forest Green. I left there with two O Levels and a spirit level and this for me is where it all be-gan . . . . . . . . . Tell us about the jobs you have had Considering I had not planned for the 'great world' I am proud of the fact that apart from the milk round and 'petrol pumps' of my youth I have only had two jobs. Whilst this might alarm some of your readers I hasten to add that the sec-ond one did last for twenty nine years ! ! I attended the job centre in Stroud at the age of sixteen and was offered a four week post as a hospital porter at Standish in Stonehouse. This I took and stayed there for four years until I received some valuable parental advice ! ! ! My father who was a lifelong journalist had a 'contact' in Gloucester Prison who I hasten to add was from the right side of the bars and at the age of twenty I was invited for a tour of the establishment. This took place and the press officer from the 'jail' met my father and I on one Saturday morning at the then daunt-ing Victorian gates and whilst my father remained outside, the Prison Service was well and truly sold to me!


25Your life behind bars I thoroughly enjoyed my twenty nine years in the Prison Service and it is only due to the fact that Gloucester Prison closed in 2013 that I took this as an opportunity to do 'something else' with my life . Following a lengthy period in 1984 at the Prison Service Training College I moved to London and served for four years at Wandsworth Prison. This was an experience in itself and along with some of the sites I saw as a young hospital porter I think it was my time here that gave me the confidence as a person that has remained with me always.

I returned to Gloucester Prison in 1988 and remained there until its closure in 2013. Contrary to popular belief prisons are very humorous places and for those readers familiar with Ronnie Barkers 'Porridge' I can confirm that in jail you will find a Fletch, a Lenny Godper, a Grouty and certainly back a few years many Mr Mackays ! !

I am not at all politically minded but I believe that the Prison Service has lost its way in recent years. The humour, the unity and the team spirit will live with me forever and on a more serious note so will the five separate occa-sions that I had to attend Coroners Court

You have set up in business now you have been released!! Some twenty years ago I took a part time job working on my rest days at Manheim Auctions near Dursley. It is due solely to this opportunity that I discovered a passion for the motor trade. I can only think that this is because you can see an end result in this trade whereby in my previous one that was not always the case ! ! As a result of this I have traded for many years with some success so some years ago I took the opportunity to reduce my hours and pursue my busi-ness interests. I am very passionate about specialising in wheelchair accessible vehicles ( WAV's ) and now operate from forecourt premises. I feel I have the confi-dence, the knowledge and the ability to make a difference to the persons life who is in need of a wheelchair accessible vehicle

Finally, where can we find you relaxing? I have always been a sociable and outgoing person and along with my part-ner Lisa we are now thoroughly enjoying the Five Valleys. Lisa lives in Cheltenham and along with myself we are 'enjoying' the mem-bership of The Cotswold Food Club. The idyllic location of The Old Lodge takes some beating as does The Fostons Ash whereby I occasional-ly sample a 'Tom Long' or two en route to Cheltenham . . . . I do hope Lisa doesn't read this ! ! ! Only last summer I met life long friends at The Old Lodge where we sam-pled Stroud Breweries 'Tom' and 'Budding' prior to' moving on to Westonbirt Arboretum to see the great Deacon Blue in concert . . . . . can it really get better than this ! !

The Gnome Hunt is a family event, following a trail around the beautiful village and gardens of Eastcombe to track down hidden gnomes. There will be 2 routes available to complete which will include a shorter, pushchair friendly option with ice creams available along the way.

The event starts at Eastcombe Primary School where there will be stalls and games and finishes at the Village Hall with cream teas – worth a visit even if you don’t plan on hunting down any gnomes!

Participants are invited to find the gnomes, collect the clues and solve the puzzle to win a gnome to take home and keep!

SUN 3RD - Services will include Together at Ten (10am) at St. Matthews Church, Cainscross; 10am Saints Alive and 4pm Choral Evensong at All Saints’, Uplands. 11am Sung Eucharist at Slad.

MON 4TH - May Day Holiday. A Fete at Charfield runs from 12noon -5pm with loads of stalls including Charity ones for Five Valley Cat Rescue and Stroud Cats’ Protection League. A good fun day out.

MON 4TH - Dunkirk Mill GL5 5HH opens from 2-4pm to experience the power of the largest working water wheel in Gloucestershire.

TUES 5TH - Cainscross WI meet at 7.15pm in St. Matthews Church

Hall for Resolutions, followed by a ’fun’ mini-auction, so join us to bag some bargains! Visitors/new members always welcome and there are always refreshments, a raffle and Trading Stall available.

TUES 5TH - 2.30pm Women’s Meeting at Christ Church, Nailsworth with Bryan James.

WED 6TH - Nailsworth & District Flower Arrangement Society meet at 7.30pm in the Town Hall for a demonstration by National Demonstrator Pam Lewis called ’Summer’s Bounty’. Pam is also a blacksmith and fashions some great stands for her work. Visitors welcome at £4.50 adults/£1 juniors. Raffle & Refreshments.
