As this is the last FVD of this year (and I’ve managed to nab a bit more space) it’s a good opportunity for me to say a big THANK YOU to all our advertisers who are after all the ones that keep the magazine going. Also, another big THANK YOU to everyone that enjoys reading and most all using the wonderful local businesses that feature in it. It really is all about valuing and supporting the wonderful variety of skilled and creative people that we have here in Gloucestershire. Lastly, but of course not least THANK YOU to my brilliant team of local people who deliver the mag to you in all weathers.

I hope you like our cover photograph of the Slad Valley this month, taken by local photographer Roger Andrews. It’s a stunning winter scene but also very topical at the moment as I am sure most of you are aware. The latest Planning Application has now been submitted by Gladman Development for 112 proper-ties on land known as Baxters’ Field, Summer Street. This company will not go away as too much money is at stake! If this is something you really care about then please send in your objections as soon as possible (see SDC website-planning applications No:S.13/2451/OUT before a valuable area of beautiful countryside is lost forever.

Wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas and

Peaceful New Year

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

If you’re feeling a little run down from all the dark mornings and winter sniffles going round, the best thing for you to do would be to start yourself a detox plan.

A detox plan will help rejuvenate your body and strengthen your immune system so you can be on a better footing to fight off any nasty flu viruses that might be waiting round the corner. It will also have you looking and feeling your best for the Christmas period, as well as giving yourself a well-earned rest from all the impurities we tend to all put into our bodies.

Below we have highlighted a few things to cut out of your diet so you can use them as a good basis in forming your very own detox plan.

No Caffeine Caffeine is the one thing that the majority of us can’t get through the day with-out. From as soon as we wake up, to energy drinks and cold cans of coke – we can’t get enough of the stuff! Although the odd cup of coffee isn’t harmful, if you’re finding you are relying on caffeine to keep you awake and active through the day then you are using it for the wrongs reasons. During your detox period, try replacing your morning cup or coffee or tea with freshly boiled water and a slice of lemon.

Cut Down That Sugar Intake A good detox diet usually involves cutting out sugary food and drink. As well as contributing to weight problems, too much sugar on a daily basis can lead to more serious illness such as diabetes. Try replacing sugar in your diet with healthy alternatives such as honey or saccharine. After the first few days you’ll get used to not having as much sugar in your food and will probably prefer it!

No Booze Deep down some of us will admit that we may drink over the suggested amount of alcohol units from time to time. As well as leading to tired looking skin and hair, drinking too much on a regular basis can affect your mood and overall ener-gy levels. Knocking alcohol on the head for the length of your detox plan will give you a clean fresh outlook at the end of it.

Having a period of detox doesn’t mean you have to give up all the things you love forever. It just means at the end of your detox plan you will have a better handle on controlling your habits and will really appreciate how much better you feel with a nice cleansed system.

Where were you born and brought up?

I was born in Stroud maternity hospital and have lived and worked in Cirencester and Stroud (with a small stint in London), all my life. I grew up in a very interesting household with my older brother.

By the age of 7, my mother (who herself was only 22 years old at the time) managed to flee with us from our very abusive father and we were brought up during the majority of our teenage lives in the Duntisbournes and went to school at Deer Park in Cirencester.

What happened after you left school?

I left home at 16 years old feeling I have served my time and took on a full time job in Cirencester at the then GTC (General Trading Company) dur-ing the day and at night I transformed to a party reveller; drinking and clubbing while picking up one bad relationship after the other… All the ex-periences I went through as a young women; from hospital stays to raves could bring me out in hives and make me run to the nearest convent, however I look at them with a little giggle and with love. I put myself and loved ones through these amazing experiences in order to take on the challenges of my adult life and I have great pride in myself for powering through them all.

How did you get into Pranic Healing? It has been a slow evolution for me, I started in my early 20’s searching and wondering what ‘I’ was all about and looked for the meaning in life. I started reading incessantly books like Louise Hays ‘You can heal your Life’ and found ‘Conversations with God ‘ by Neale Walsch which at the age of 22 inspired me. I then wanted to understand the Power of the Mind in more detail and studied NLP, then found Dr. Wayne Dyer; on and on I went.

23I must have read thousands of books before I realised they were all say-ing the same thing….your thoughts are what make you and your life around you. In adult life we have ‘Free Will’ to dis-guard’ old beliefs we don’t like and are bad for us or we have ‘Free Will’ to carry on believing them of ourselves.

At the age of 30 and trained up in the art of Reiki, I then trained as an energy consultant by using the Acupuncture and meridian lines within the body to interpret what the body needed nutritionally and homeopathically to heal itself. Then about 10 years ago I was introduced to a lady called Lee Everett (the wife of dearly departed Kenny Everett) and she ran a college in Reading called ‘Obsidian’ which I joined to advance my think-ing and understanding of the afterlife and indeed the age old question ‘what is this life’.

Having gone into regression therapy and meditation practice I felt I need-ed a recognised qualification so I could dedicate my life towards helping others, so I joined a 3 year counselling course which included Hypnother-apy. Then 7 years ago I was guided to a Pranic Healer and all my think-ing and yearning about life’s questions and understanding why I was ‘here’ stopped and I started again to re-learn correct truths about religion and spiritually. I studied Master Choa Kok Sui’s methodology and heal-ing practices to understand the secret doctrines and started to meditate in a totally different and correct way…I have never looked back.

What are your plans for the future?

I have started meditation classes in Box, Rodborough & Woodchester to help people in the area understand and practice correct meditation tech-niques. I am also starting to find clients for Pranic Healing. I am finally excited about the future whereby I will be able to dedicate myself to help-ing others improve their life's, health and understanding of this world and the next.

A day in the life of

Celia Mackie

Recruitment and Training Co-ordinator Corinium Care, Nailsworth

(From dad’s marmalade to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a lot of

caring in between)

“My dad’s home-made marmalade gets me started in the morn-ing. He began making it when he retired and it’s great for break-fast.

I’m out of the door at 8.20am and drive to Corinium Care in Nailsworth. I take the scenic route along the back roads and often get held up by the cows on Minchinhampton Common.

Checking emails is the first task – you never know what’s in store. Hopefully it’s mostly good news – an applicant to be one of our live-in carers might have confirmed she’s coming on our training course.

As Recruitment and Training Co-Ordinator, I handle applications from potential live-in carers from all over the world. Sometimes their colourful use of English makes me chuckle.

I’m an applicant’s first port of call when they’re inquiring about a job with Corinium Care so they have lots of questions. It’s a good chance for me to have a chat. We pride ourselves on matching a client with the right carer so getting a feel for a carer’s personali-ty is important.

I spent six years in customer care as a manager before coming to Corinium, and I’ve also been a live-in carer so I can generally tap into any worries and put them at ease. Sometimes, if applicants are local and they sound a bit unsure, I ask them to pop in – you can’t beat a face-to-face meeting.

At lunch time, I always pop into Nailsworth for some fresh air – I might read my book for a bit.

If it’s a training week, it can be hectic in the afternoons. We run a training course for about 20 carers once a month in Nailsworth so the place is buzzing.

That’s when I meet the applicants for the first time – it’s good to put a face to an application form. Often they’ve just left their home in South Africa or Zimbabwe and find themselves alone in the middle of drizzly Gloucestershire. It’s important that they get a warm welcome and are made to feel at ease.

One of the best things about training week is that Nigel, our ca-terer, makes fantastic lunches for our trainees, and all 17 head office staff get a free lunch too. It beats a Morrisons sandwich.

The great thing is that no day is ever the same. Sometimes I’m rushing about helping in other departments. I’m a former carer, so I can step in if a carer suddenly falls ill.

At 5pm I head for home, dodging the cows at Minch. My perfect evening? Catching up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer repeats on Sky.”

A Peek into the Past One of the most remarkable events of the First World War concerns the 'Christmas Truce' of 1914, in which the soldiers of the Western Front laid down their arms on Christmas Day and met in No Man's Land, exchanging food and cigarettes, as well as playing football. The cessation of violence was entirely unofficial. There had been no prior discussion and troops acted spontaneously from goodwill, not orders. The most famous account of events involves British and German forces; however, French and Belgium troops also took part. No-one really knows what initiated it. There were some reports that British troops heard their German counterparts singing Christmas carols and joined but there were also reports of

German and British soldiers erecting signs wishing each other a 'Merry Christmas'. Driven by feelings of goodwill, home-sickness and combat-weariness some men crossed the lines with their hands up, and troops from the

opposing side went to meet them. Commanders either turned a blind-eye or joined in. Food and supplies were exchanged and tools and equipment were borrowed. Games of football were played and bodies trapped within No Man's Land were buried. In many areas the truce lasted for the whole of Christmas day but in some places the peace lasted much longer and it was several weeks before the bloody conflict resumed.

CHRISTMAS TREE TOP TIPSprovided by Stella Gray of Highfield Garden World

Our Christmas trees are in! Come and choose the perfect tree to bring Christmas to life in yourhome. From table top treasures to majestic 7 footers, we have a fresh tree to suit everyone. We alsooffer a lovely selection of individual artificial trees. Our Christmas department is a wonderland full ofdecorations just waiting to adorn your homes for the festive season and there are gifts a-plenty tosuit all tastes. With plenty of free parking and a fantastic, brand new restaurant why not come alongto Highfield where Christmas is made easy? It’s a one-stop-Christmas shop!!

Types of Fresh Cut Christmas Trees

Norway Spruce (Picea Abies) is the traditional Christmas tree which washistorically grown close by and brought into the house at Christmas. It has short

green needles and that wonderful great pine scent which will fill the room.

Nordman Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) is a Needlefast variety which has beenintroduced to this country in recent years and has become the most popular

variety because it does not drop its needles so readily in the home. It stillhas the classic Christmas tree shape and has long, soft, dark greenneedles.

Caring for your tree

• Keep your tree outside, in the open, until you are ready to putyour tree up and decorate it.

• When you bring your tree in, saw a small section off the stumpand then place it straight into a water-holding stand or bucketof water (a fresh cut tree can drink up to 5 litres of water a day).

• Try and keep the tree away from a source of direct heat (i.e.a fire or radiator).

• Finally, keep giving your tree a drink of water - you willbe amazed at what it can drink!

Don’t forget to bring back your fresh cut treeafter Christmas to be recycled.

Having read this sententious and sloppily-argued piece in the November edition, a mix-ture of quasi-statistics, unfounded assertions apparently based on unattributed so-called 'news items' and unconvincing conjecture, I felt it necessary to respond on behalf of a more clear-thinking readership. Taking his 'points' in order, Mr Maisey seems to suggest that as families now no longer teach their children 'right and wrong' (or more properly right from wrong) 'so our children (sic) no longer have any accountability', and that 'hundreds of thousands' of elderly people are lonely, neglected and without social contact, then these two 'news events' result from the failings of an apparently morally better-educated older generation, since our children can hardly be held responsible. His re-marks on the unsuitability of media-cultivated role models are at once arrogant and elitist - what's wrong with a self-made man (or woman)? These are the sort of people who made Britain (or at least England) great... and when it comes to fame I for one would rather have the Beckhams or some 'reality TV' characters successfully putting themselves about on national television as role models for the young than the publicity-shy invisible altruists he apparently favours for the job. What sort of moral imperative is that for the young people of today? Success demands self-generated determination, or at least luck - and nothing wrong with that.

Mr Maisey attributes a lack of focus in education on philosophy, moral or social ideals to a fading of religious belief - 'the vast majority having no idea of consideration for oth-ers'. While the C of E (not normally over-associated with education on philosophy from the pulpit -(and quite right too) might be argued to have a declining influence on the Great British public as a whole, other religions – apparently gaining in influence rather than fading - currently seem to be providing entirely too much in the way of philosophi-cal guidance to their adherents, resulting in a decided lack of consideration for others - all too often extending to non-believers' well-being.

Mr Maisey might consider his as a lone voice crying in the wilderness, but given the attention increasingly now being paid over a wide area to the undoubted perils of inatten-tion to global warming, his concern is shared by most of us - here at least - and those that don't share it are not going to be swayed by this kind of approach, being as it is both hectoring and petulant.

On a personal note, I have attempted to instil in my own offspring a passion for appropri-ate (ie. my own) ideals and the need for change in our society, but I'm afraid this hasn't turned out too well in his case, the lad spending too much time lounging around wearing tights (like that comedian who so much upset that Manuel character a year or two ago), playing on his 'x-box' and considering the sort of alternative society lifestyle calculated to upset his mother. Perhaps Mr Maisey could advise? He seems to have strong views in this area. Yours Lawrence Heathcliffe, (Stroud)

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five

Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more

importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no

reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are

not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response

as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools.

With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing

Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of
