A Peek into the Past When King Richard the Lionheart died, his brother, John, took over the throne of England.

King John’s rule was characterised by failure. Chiefly, he quarrelled with the Pope and lost an expensive war with France. In order to raise money he sold off church offices and imposed heavy taxes on the nobility.

The Bishops were furious and called for action. The Barons took up arms, but instead of a civil war they used their position and power to draught the Magna Carta, which they forced King John to sign.

The Magna Carta was essentially a peace treaty between King John and his Barons. It guaranteed that the king would respect the feudal rights and privileges of the nobility; uphold the freedom of the church and maintain the nation’s laws.

It put a limit on the king’s power and ensured that he too, would have to obey the law. It also stated that no man could be punished except by the lawful action of his peers. Eventually this would become trial by jury.

Thus the Magna Carta is one of the cornerstones in the development of British democracy.

This approach is based on the work of Dr John Sarno, an Ameri-can medical doctor and author of ”The Mind Body Prescription” and “Healing Back Pain”. Dr Sarno realised that in order to resolve pain we need to address the underlying causes of it, many of which are stress related. By addressing our previ-ous stresses and acknowledging the emotions connected with them we can release the stress and clear the pain. I have been working with people with musculoskeletal issues for 27 years and helping people using the Alexander Technique. When there are stress issues the SIRPA approach can offer the missing piece of the jigsaw and total pain resolu-tion can occur. Having recently trained in this way of working I am seeking 4 chronic pain suffer-ers to participate in the Pain Resolution Programme and in return to be willing to be a case study for my work. You will need to:

1. Complete an in depth confidential questionnaire 2. Attend a 90 minutes session in Frampton on Severn 3. Attend 2 follow up 45 minute sessions 4. Complete short questionnaires during and after to monitor progress 5. Pay a refundable deposit of £ 40.00 which is returned at the end of the pro-gramme 5. Be open to change and trying out some new techniques at home

Sadly, cases of Skin Cancer have risen over the past five decade in the UK due to lack of knowledge and awareness on the subject. From people using oil when sunbathing to not knowing what to look for when it comes to skin cancer – more information about skin cancer and ways to prevent it should always be updated and readily available. Below we have highlighted some key facts and things to look out for if you feel you have had too much unprotected sun exposure in the past and want to be safer in sun in future.

What to look out for If in the past you have had a lot of exposure to the sun or other things such as sun beds, you will always want to make sure that any moles or warts that pop up randomly on your body are seen by a doctor. Most of the time these moles can be completely innocence but it is always best to get a biopsy to make sure it is not the start of anything more serious.

Prevention and Protection ALWAYS make sure you wear at least factor 30 SPF when out in the sun for long periods of time. Avoid the sun during its peak hours which usually run from 11am to 3pm and always remember to drink plenty of water. You can always enjoy the outdoors in summer without getting burnt, just remember to wear things like hats, sunglasses and even t-shirts are great for swimming if you find yourself tingly. There’s no need to compromise on fun in the sun, just do it in moderation to keep safe.

Alternatives If you simply must have that sun kissed glow, there are so many products available on the market today that will help you achieve this. Everything from gradual tanning moisturis-ers to salon sprays on tans; you can look tanned without putting your health at risk.

On the other hand, what’s wrong with being pale and interesting? Not only can too much sun exposure give you skin cancer but it also ages skin cells tremendously and dries them out. Keep those wrinkles away and stay in the shade from now on. Always visit your GP if you are worried about anything or have any lumps or bumps that just appear or moles that you are worried about or moles that change shape, colour start to itch or worry you.

How long have you lived in the Five Valleys? I moved to Horsley from Bristol with my husband in 1997 when we fell in love with a beautiful cottage in Wash-pool. It needed a lot of work and we spent a year restoring it. I was pregnant at the time so it was all quite stressful! I came across SIRPA (Stress Illness Recovery) and trained last year to offer this approach to clients. It complements the Alex-ander work very well as it goes a little deeper into our emo-tional patterns.

What about your home life? I live with my husband John and 16 year old son Arran and our small lurcher Coco – the best dog in the world!

Any interests of hobbies? I love yoga and biodanza, vintage clothes, beach combing and crafts. A few years ago I did the Access Art and Design course at Stroud College which was wonderful. I get great joy from being creative – making my home look lovely or cooking a special meal or playing with a set of paints on watercolour pa-per.

Any plans for the future? I get pleasure from helping people and would like to continue growing my business. I am planning some residential Retreats focusing on Restoration and Rejuvenation. We have such busy lives I think it’s important to allow time to breathe out. I can’t imaging not working or retiring as I love what I do!

Going to the Dogs Those of us who are dog-lovers know how important they are to our family. Dogs are great fun, brilliant companions and...heaps of responsibility.

If you’re thinking of sharing your home with a dog here is some food for thought.

Rehome Do consider rehoming a rescue. There are many lovely dogs just waiting for a new home. Good rescue centres assess new arrivals thoroughly and will be able to advise on the best fit for your family.

Neuter With so many abandoned dogs around don’t risk adding to the problem. Neutering prevents dogs reproducing. The operation is routine and carried out under general anaesthetic.

As well as preventing unwanted puppies, neutering tends to produce calmer, less territorial behaviour in males. In females it avoids the messy inconvenience of ‘seasons’ and prevents womb infections, which can prove fatal.

Male dogs can be neutered any time from four months old. Female dogs can be spayed before their first season though some people prefer to leave it until three months after. Discuss this with your vet.

The average cost of the operation is £60 for male dogs and around £100 for females. The Dogs Trust runs a subsidised neutering campaign in several areas of the country. Check out their website.

Microchip This is the best way to ensure that if

your dog goes missing, he is returned to you. Each microchip has its own unique ID number plus the name of the dog’s owners and a contact number.

The tiny chip is inserted under the dog’s skin, between his shoulder blades.

If the dog escapes, the police, a vet or a dog warden can scan him and reunite him with his family.

Train A well trained dog is a happy dog, and much nicer to live with than an untrained one!

There are many good dog training clubs around. Choose one which encourages the use of kindness and positive reinforcement. The Kennel Club run the UK’s largest dog training programme, known as the Good Citizen Dog Scheme. It starts at puppy foundation level and from there you can progress through bronze, silver and gold awards.

Exercise This is really important. A dog needs a chance to stretch his legs and explore his environment on a daily basis. Make sure you clean up any dog mess!

If you have a very active dog, agility classes are an enjoyable activity for dog and owner. As a bonus you’ll meet new friends too.

If you work, think about employing a dog-walker. Make sure they’re police-checked and insured, and ask for references.

Be a responsible owner and your dog will thank you.
