It can’t be September can it? Let’s hope we get an Indian summer as I’m not ready yet to throw on extra layers! On the positive side autumn is so beautiful and a busy time for gardeners and on page 32 we have really useful garden tips from the ex-perts at Highfield Garden World. On the other hand if you feel you would like to make some positive changes to your own life then take a look at the article on page 30 where Liane Ulbricht-Kazan and her business Changes Welcome is featured. Liane is a clini-cal hypnotherapist and really can help with a variety of problems from addic-tion through to IBS and relationship difficulties. Happy reading!

Thoughts of a Scout Scouting is a great place to meet new people, learn useful life skillsand discover hobbies you wouldn’t have thought of taking up before. It keeps me very active andhas given me life experiences. As well as making friends for life with people locally, I have visitedHolland and Switzerland making new friends from all over the World. My best experience hasbeen Nabo which is an intense 3 day survival course. Curtis - Explorer ScoutGuide summer camp Our Senior Guides joined 7000 Guides, Scouts & Leaders for aweeks camp at ‘WINGS2014’ a international gathering in Great Windsor Park. It was great fun!there were different activities each day including archery, rafting, Bollywood dancing and a LiveIt zone which showed us how to wallpaper a room!! We had to organise an activity for others sowe chose lawnmower races in honour of Edwin Budding, the Stroud inventor of thelawnmower. The week was fun and we even got used to the planes going overhead fromHeathrow. FANTASTIC WEEK !!! Isabel & Charlotte - Senior GuidesWhy not join us as a volunteer. Adults volunteering with Scouts or Guides canenrich their life, don't just take our word for it. Over 90% of our volunteers say that their Scout &Guide experiences are beneficial and worth adding to your CV.Funding The Group is self funding and as a major part of fund raising the Group works in closepartnership with The Gloucester Model Railway Club in presenting the:-

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Our badgers need you to join our Wounded Badger Patrols

During the 2013 cull many badgers were wounded and died slow and painful deaths. The government’s own Independent Expert Panel concluded that the cull was both inhumane and ineffective. Still, the government is insisting that the cull should go ahead once more in Gloucestershire and Somerset in 2014,this time worryingly without any independent monitoring. We want to see an end to bovine TB and the suffering it causes, but killing badgers in a futile cull, proven to have no effect on bTB, is not the answer.

Sheepscombe Primary School provides ‘memorable learning opportunities and pupils benefit from an exciting

curriculum’ as stated in the recent (April 2014) Ofsted report which gave the school a

‘Good ‘judgement. We are proud of the fact that pupils behaviour and attitudes to learning are

‘often exemplary’.

We believe that values underpin all that we do withchildren and parents as well as the wider community.

Respect for one another is key as is trust and co-operation. We value the children as individuals

whilst ensuring that they know we care for them and want to develop their own personal potential.

We are very proud of our links with theNational Trust Ebworth Estate. We work

closely with the National Trust wardens to planprojects and activities. Each class regularly

walks up to Ebworth and uses the Yurt as a classroom.

Mrs Bennion is an accredited Forest Leaderand all our teachers relish the opportunity to

take the curriculum outdoors.

On ‘Fish Wednesday’ pupils enjoya hot lunch cooked at the Butchers

Arms and served in school by parentvolunteers. Vegetarian alternativesare available. Through the winter, arota of parents is drawn up to bakepotatoes and bring them in for the

children on a Thursday.

Where were you born and

brought up? I was born in Walsall in the West Midlands and spent the best part of 18 years studying at local schools. I was fortunate to have also spent a con-siderable amount of time in Southern Spain during that time, which gave me an innate passion for all things mediterranean!

What did you do after you left school? Like most Midland children in the mid eighties, there were few options other than a gloomy career in the declining car industry, progression into University or attempting to gain a place on a Government training scheme. As I’d always loved associating with people and with a real de-sire to ‘get into the outside world’, I opted for a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) in Lewis’s of Birmingham.

One of the great benefits of these YTS schemes was that you earned money but learned academic skills whilst working hard. One thing I real-ise now is that those formative years in the workplace have helped me define many other people’s careers in subsequent roles, through coach-ing, training and providing trust when leading groups of people.

How did you become involved in the business you have now? It’s a long story, but after losing both of my parents a couple of years ago, I felt that my Executive role at the World’s largest Building Society was not giving me the scope to use my skills to help others develop. I also longed to be re-connected to the people in economics (and life) that make the world go around. Whilst I had 17 million customers at Nation-wide, I seldom met them and to me, you need to watch customer behav-iour in order to improve it.

I left Nationwide and set up The Patchwork Mouse in Painswick, a small coffee shop on the A46. Since starting the business with just 12 seats, we’ve expanded to 25 covers and increased and improved our range. Having also recruited a team of part time employees, it gave me the time to focus on @KwikMedia, a business development and marketing agen-cy in Painswick, with offices in Weston super Mare and Portugal.

25

Since starting @KwikMedia with a few independent clients and assisting the townsfolk of Painswick get connected to the internet and social media, I’ve been fortunate to bid for and win larger contracts across our three regions. In addition, we’ve created a partnership with other local small businesses to offer a full gamut of services including graphic design, web design, business strate-gy services and social media outsourcing.

Any interests or hobbies?

I’m a Parish Councillor on Painswick Parish Council and also co-chair the @LovePainswick business group. In any spare time, and whilst ‘off the grid' I love to read, walk and take in the silence of our beautiful surroundings.

What of your home life?

Most of my Painswick home life is spent living above (and below) the shop. We’re in the middle of a three year development plan for the whole building and have spent 18 months living in chaos, whilst we improved customer areas and built a brand new kitchen in our cellar area. We’re fortunate to have a home / office on the Coast and also in Portugal, so when the going get’s tough, we can disappear for a few days. I’m at my most creative when work-ing in daylight with a great view out of the window, and I’m lucky to have my office open wherever there’s a broadband connection!

Any plans for the future?

I’ve done my world domination days and have the scars to prove it. Corporate life in Retail, Media, Electronics and Banking teach-es you a lot about life, but little about how to balance one’s aspi-rations and priorities. My future is about my Partner, Craig, my sister Julie and my great friends made through work and play across the world. @KwikMedia is all about me sharing some of the great experiences I’ve had and helping individuals, profes-sionals and SME’s to think differently and grow their brand by having a second pair of eyes. I’ve purposely set my consultancy rates below that of many competitors in order to provide my ser-vices to the widest possible audience.

Regenerate your hair after the summer By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon

Photos and a beautiful tan are not the only things that you’ll bring back from your holiday. Bathing in the sea or the pool, wandering around the city on a sunny day without a hat, and even the air conditioning turned on in the office on hot days - they all left their mark not only on the skin, but also on your hair. If you notice after returning from holiday that your hair is dull, dry and lacks vitality it's a sign that you need to take extra care. Brave Cut There is no better cure for damaged hair than to cut the ends. This will make the look light and fresh. Good Shampoos If your shampoo does not give the expected results and your hair is still puffed up and messy it means you have to change your shampoo to a better one. While washing it is also good, performing a gentle massage of the head will stimulate the hair follicles into action. Remember that you will have to wait at least a month to see the first effects of regeneration. Conditioners and Masks An essential element of hair regeneration is the use of conditioners. Choose conditioners with jojoba or coconut oil for weakened hair. Remember to apply it on damp hair and not on the scalp and leave it for minimum of 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, rinse conditioner with lukewarm water. If you wash your hair daily, apply the conditioner at least twice a week. You could even try making your own hair treatment, warm some coconut oil and mas-sage into hair and scalp, leave on, remember when shampooing out put the shampoo on first to emulsify or the water will just run off your hair. Herbal Lotions Additionally, you can try to prepare herbal lotion. For this purpose, pour a litre of boiling water over 3 handfuls of dried horsetail (available in herbal shops), leave to cool and then put through a strainer. Rinse washed hair with the lotion while performing circular massage stimulating microcirculation. Note! After applying this lotion you should not rinse again with water, but allow to dry naturally. Professional Hair Regeneration If you prefer to take advise from a professional you can go to a beauty salon, which of-fers special treatments. One of them is the enzymatic treatment with collagen, which aims to remove damaged hair follicles. Another beneficial treatment is keratin treatment that restores damaged strands, followed by the second phase, an intensive hydration. Supplements A correct diet can be complemented by supplements that speed up the regeneration of hair after the summer. Most of them include extract of horsetail, evening primrose, net-tle, burdock or yeast.

While using any hair treatments you need to be patient. The results of using masks, con-ditioners or supplements may be visible only after a few weeks, but the effect is worth the wait.

Based in a peaceful location near Stroud, Village Therapies offers Systematic Kinesiology, deep tissue massage, therapeutic massage and holistic natural facelift massage.

Systematic Kinesiology - What it is – a clinically reproducible natural health modality used to identify imbalances within the body. It is a non-invasive and sound methodology using muscle testing.

The need to re-balance - the body attempts to maintain a constant internal environment (homoeostasis). But the process can be overwhelmed by physical, environmental, nutritional, electrical or emotional stresses giving rise to imbalances that can develop into injury or disease if not corrected.

How it works – muscle testing can access information from the body’s bio-energy system and meridians. It is used to identify the priority area of the energy system to be helped and to evaluate the energy changes brought about by a variety of corrections, including bio-individual nutrition, firm reflex massage, energy techniques, and emotional work if required.

The aim – is not just relief of symptoms but optimal health and wellbeing.

Systematic Kinesiology is best known for – identifying food and environmental sensitivities/allergies: it will also benefit digestive problems, emotional issues, the nervous system, sleep problems, the endocrine system, pain, structural issues/injuries, nutritional imbalances, weight management, and much more.

Massage – Deep tissue massage is a powerful, customised full body massage that focuses on relieving specific stress and muscle tension.

Holistic natural facelift is a wonderfully relaxing treatment that balances holistically through facial massage. It is a customised combination of Eastern and Western facial massage, acupressure points and facial reflexology. The massage techniques can improve the complexion by stimulating skin rejuvenation and boosting cellular activity, aiding the removal of toxins and improving the flow of lymph. It reduces muscle tension and helps to reduce expression lines and wrinkles as well as toning and tightening the skin and the underlying muscles.

Most people know that looking in the local newspaper is a great place to start if they’ve identified a problem for which they need a solution. They’ll find a tradesman with practi-cal skills, or a supplier with local

stock, but what about the issues that we are faced with in our daily lives, for which we have not yet identified the right solution?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is maybe exactly what you need. Rather than focusing on past circumstances and problems, this therapy can support you in realising solutions and achieving your preferred future. Whether we like it or not, few if any of us ever reach our full potential, so it follows that we could all do something to improve our lives.

There are many reasons why people become stuck, lose focus, become una-ble to cope, feel stressed, fearful or depressed, or simply lack the confi-dence they need to live a full and happy life, but positive change is very achievable, provided you have the will. Liane Ulbricht-Kazan is a clinical Hypnotherapist, now practicing in Nails-worth. She sees all kinds of people, with all kinds of issues, and just loves being able to help them to improve their lives, so why not get in touch with her to find out how Hypnotherapy may be able to help you towards a better future?

GARDENING TIPS FOR SEPTEMBERprovided by Jon Mason of Highfield Garden World

As the wonderful harvest and colours of the autumn emerge, here are some tips to help youprepare your garden for the onset of winter.

PLANTING· With the ground still soft, this is the perfect time to plant new spring bulbs, trees and shrubs· If you have big clumps of perennials now is a good time to lift, divide and replant them to

rejuvenate borders

PRUNING· Remove spent flower stems, and prune out any broken or diseased stems in your shrubs· Any climbing or rambling roses that have finished flowering can be pruned back, but leave the

perpetual varieties for a while longer as they will continue blooming until the frosts· Hedges can be given their final trim of the season

THE LAWN· Raise your mower blades to let the grass grow a little taller to protect the roots over winter· If you have been plagued by weeds, remove them now before the ground becomes too wet· Aerating the lawn and also applying a top dressing will improve it for next year· September is the perfect time for sowing new lawns

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES· It’s harvest time for a host of goodies, and apples, pears and plums are at their best now.

Continue to pick your crops as they are ready, but clear them once they are finished to avoiddebris in the soil harbouring pest and diseases

· Dig up and store any potatoes left in the ground to avoid slug attack!· Remove any bruised or rotting fruit a.s.a.p. to stop it spreading disease or other nasties· Now is the time to plant onion and garlic sets· Pot up some herbs in pretty containers to overwinter on your kitchen window ledge

Finally, enjoy these mild, multi-coloured days of autumn. Enjoy too the knowledgethat spending a little time putting your garden to bed for the winter will pay offnext year!

Dear Editor - I was struck by your editorial piece in the July issue, viz. the difficulties of divorce and house-moving - 'two of the most stressful things that happen in life' - as you describe them. Since I am investigating both options at this time I thought I would assist you (and others) by my thoughts on this area. I am considering dumping the current Mrs Heathcliffe. She is not getting any younger, and frankly does not now measure up. A few years ago on an "Activity" holiday in Tenerife she fell off her bicycle and broke her pump, and since that time has abandoned any form of useful exercise or leisure activity, eg. housework, spending most of her waking hours lounging around watching so-called 'Reality TV' shows such as Celebrity Homes under the Hammer and Flog something or other while putting on vast quantities of weight through excess consumption of chocolates. She is no longer an asset on social occasions, and I (no mean performer my-self you understand when taking the floor) am finding t increasingly difficult to manoeuvre her in tight situations. My 'secretary' (previously mentioned as my personal assistant accompanying me on business trips to Barbados) seems to fit the bill as a suitable replacement, but should any (female) readers of the magazine wish to present themselves as other candidates for my scrutiny I would find this acceptable - photographs necessary. Concerning house-moving, it is obviously no part of my plan to leave the marital home myself. I am fairly sure that any reasonable arbiter would find for me (and my secretary) should the current Mrs H start to be-have awkwardly, but just in case I am prepared to slip something (I am not without means) towards any necessary judicial 'expenses'. I would conduct the case myself, since I have strong views on any involvement of the legal profession - described I believe as the oldest in the world. Lawrence Heathcliffe Stroud

We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticedand unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now.In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies.

With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for.

Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too.

Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.

Everybody’s got a book in them.

Book ad.indd 1 31/10/2013 15:34
