W elcome to the July edition of The Chingford Direc-

tory, your local community magazine and business Direc-tory. Summer should be well under way by now, when we traditionally come together as a nation to complain about the weather (either too hot

or too cold), moan about the sport (either rained off or else we lost badly), and grumble about the telly (either too many repeats or else the new stuff is rubbish).

Key dates to remember in July include the World Toe-Wrestling Championship in Derby-shire, and, of course, Don’t Step On a Bee Day, which glorious festival kind of implies that, for the rest of the year, you should go round jump-ing on every bee that you see. I, for one, try to avoid such behaviour, as it seriously affects my chances in the Toe-Wrestling.

Those of you who are unfortunate enough to know me may have gathered that I no longer work in the local library, and have transferred my questionable skills to Epping Forest. In July, the new Visitor Centre next to Queen Eliza-beth’s Hunting Lodge is due to open. It’s an ex-citing conversion of the old Coach House, so watch out for the official announcement, and feel free to pop in and wrestle my toes.

S o this woman comes up to

me and goes “You’re so superfi-cial.” “Thank you,” I reply. “One does try one’s best.” “That,” she re-plies, “Is exactly what I mean.” Not sure what she meant by that. I’ve always maintained that beauty is skin-deep, and there-fore avoid having any personality.

Portmeirion is a bit on the superfi-cial side, and is quite proud of this too. When you look from the main square to see a pastel plastered campanile against the peaks of nearby Snowdonia, you know that something a bit odd is going on. Somehow, a bit of Adriatic Italy has been moved to North Wales. It’s settled in quite nicely, thank you, and has grown accustomed to the vagaries of the local weather, and is happy to show its superficial façade to the tourists.

Sir Clough William-Ellis spent half a century de-signing and building and adding to his pretend Italian village. He bought the site in 1925, when it was in a bit of a state, a wilderness on a promontory. He changed its name from Aber Ia (which means Glacial Estuary) to Portmeirion, a reference to the county of Merioneth in which it stood. He had already

formed a plan to build an Italianate village, but now he had found the perfect location. From 1925 to 1939, the main structures were planned and built, including the campanile and the hotel. Then, from 1954-1976, he filled in the gaps. His ethos was to prove that a spot of natural beauty could be devel-oped without spoiling it.

Even the smallest parts of the village seem meticu-lously planned to fit in with the general feel. Narrow cobbled streets wind between small shops of apri-cot orange and eggshell blue, baroque and rococo. Taller houses surround the central square of flow-ers and ponds, as though to smile down and nod in a general approval. Paths wind through gardens, under arches with Renaissance murals and through porticos. A lane leads down to the water’s edge, a private hotel, and a concrete boat that seems to have noticed this strange village in passing along the estuary, and decided to stay. Look back up at the village on its hillside, at this strange Italian skyline of turrets and domes, pillars and pantheons, then glance across the estuary at the brooding Welsh peaks of Snowdonia. You can decide for yourself whether William-Ellis succeeded in his dream.

Behind the village, botanical gardens have been cultivated against the hillside. Begun before William-Ellis arrived, early Victorians had planted Himalayan Firs and Scots Pine. The strangely mild climate is more in keeping with Cornwall than North Wales, and allows the exotic species to thrive. Although

William-Ellis did a lot of planting in the gardens, as well as the dig-ging of lakes and the development of paths, his main interest re-mained the vil-lage itself, and the gardens were allowed to be-come a bit wild. In 1980, a couple of years after his death, clearance work began to create paths and avenues in the gardens, which now offer views over the roof-tops and towers of the village, across the estuary to the mountains.

True, it’s superficial. No doubt it’s beauty is skin-deep. But it has a special personality beneath all that, something in completely the wrong place at

totally the wrong time, but so right too. And that is what I was getting at when I thanked that rather rude woman.

R esidents of North Chingford may not have heard of the E4 Business Forum – but it was this group, made up of local

traders, that encouraged the Local Authority to review parking restrictions in Station Road, E4. This review resulted in the Council relaxing restrictions, parking now being free in Station Road before 10am and after 4pm, Monday to Saturday, with a free 15 minute ‘Stop and Shop’ facility. From our discussions with Council Officers we can now give clarification on the thorny problem of how to best use your FREE 15 minutes. Essentially, the free minutes can be added to the front of your stay – for example, if you park at 1pm, you can scratch the card for 1.15pm. This is great news!

Working in partnership with the Local Authority we have also protested the recent large increases in parking charges, and continue to lobby to have these reduced. In the

meantime, we have been successful in encouraging the Local Authority to provide signage directing visitors to the area to the Richmond Road car park. It’s not generally known, but with the exception of Sunday, it is far less expensive to use this car park than it is to park in Station Road. Charges being: Monday to Sunday: 80p an hour, £1.60 for two hours, £2.40 for 4 hours and £6 for the day. Parking is free before 9am and after 5pm.

A Chingford artist has had his work accepted into an exhibition at the Royal Academy set to be viewed by more than 150,000 people over

the next two months. David Sullivan, a fellow graduate alongside David

Hockney and Tracey Emin of the Painting Department at the Royal College of Art, and who until recently worked for many years from a studio in Lloyd Park in Walthamstow, was delighted to have had the painting, 'Man on a beach ball' selected for the exhibition from nearly twelve thousand entries.

The Summer Exhibition is the world's largest open contemporary art exhibition drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and emerging living artists, and this year the show launched the cele-bration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee with a special reception.

Held annually since the Royal Academy's foundation in 1768, the Summer Exhibition is a unique showcase for art of all styles and media, encompassing paintings, sculpture, prints, film, photography and architectural models.

H ow proud we are of our local 6,000 acres of ancient woodland and

how pleased we feel when a book is released which aids enjoyment. People of all ages and from many walks of life will be familiar with the author, Nicholas Hagger, who was a pupil at Oaklands and Chigwell Schools and read English at Oxford. He lectured at universities in Iraq, was tutor to Prince Hitachi, Emperor Hirohito’s son in Japan and was almost executed whilst teaching in Gaddafi’s Libya. He was a leading light in Oaklands, Coopersale Hall and Normanhurst Schools and has written 30 books on diverse subjects, such as statecraft, philosophy and comparative religion.

In this book, he records many forest delights and also poses some interesting questions. Raised in the area, one of his favourite childhood recollections is visiting his dentist, who was Howard Carter’s brother, and as he drilled, he told Nicholas exciting stories. “My brother entered the tomb of the great Pharaoh, Tutankhamen – open wide please, just a little more drilling – and saw wonderful things!” Hagger describes some local events, including his meeting with Winston Churchill in 1945 and recalls events which hit the national headlines, such as how the double police murderer, Harry Roberts, whilst living wild in the forest, burst into the Owl Inn public house to rob everyone at knifepoint. Celebrities are also mentioned, such as Rod Stewart who attended sports day at his school and Jane Goody’s sons who attended the school before her untimely death. What wonderful memories!

The book escorts us from armoured elephants brought here by Claudius to pillow mounds at High Beach (possible ritual structures of funeral pyres of Romans killed in battle). Could Boudicca’s last stand be at Amesbury Banks and could she have picked hemlock at Cobbin’s Brook and died near Copped Hall? This wonderful possibility is presented! Other fascinating historical events are that the county of Essex claims descent from Woden and the Danish conquest gave it Danelaw. It did not escape the Great Plague and was involved in the Peasants’ Revolt. Henry VIII created a deer park in Chingford and Dick Turpin lived in a cave in the forest. There

were medicinal springs in Chigwell Row and Tennyson visited his depressed brother, who was a voluntary patient at Fair Mead House asylum. A failed business caused a huge financial loss to Tennyson’s family and resulted in him being too broke to marry. The poet John Clare is also remembered with the locations of his poems. The five stages of the building of Waltham Abbey are detailed and a suitable Abbey walk for visitors is provided. Chingford, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Epping, Chigwell and other villages of bygone eras are included. Copped Hall receives several pages, along with Hill House and Loughton Hall as is the sad story of the lady of

Wanstead House.

Nicholas Hagger provides a personal memoire, a fascinating history of the people, places and institutions of the Epping Forest area and a timeline that begins prior to the ice age. Add to this, selected poems, written by the author, and some interesting ancient maps, and you have an excellent book which will delight everyone of all ages.

I was at a psychology conference in Eastern Europe recently. I had a wonderful time; the presentations were excellent, the presenters (who came from all

over the world) were great fun to be with and delegates were warm and welcoming. The hotel we stayed in was superb, despite being in a rather run-down Black Sea resort. It was all good.

The country we were in seems to be a country of “haves” and “have-nots” – no in-between. You are either wealthy (by their standards anyway), driving a smart car and wearing smart clothes, or you are very poor with little chance of improving your lot. Needless to say, most of the delegates at the conference fell into the former category.

What surprised me, though, was that virtually all the women delegates I spoke to were desperate to get some time for themselves and it seemed that attendance at this conference was about the only way they were going to be able to do that. They all had numerous family and caring responsibilities and it appeared that their culture was such that this was “normal” i.e. it was a woman’s role to take care of everyone (except herself). I spoke to one affluent and educated woman, whom I will call Asha, who spoke very good English (much to my shame, not having a word of her language except “thank you”!). Asha is a psychotherapist and she told me that her husband’s mother who was unwell, was so dependent on her for absolutely everything that she was desperate to get some time away. Juggling the demands of a young family and her work was more than enough and she felt her husband and his brother could take some share of the work involved in caring for their mother. They did not agree. Asha told me that she had become so desperate that she told her mother-in-law that she would be away in London for 3 months; this was not true but Asha felt that she had no choice if she wanted to keep her sanity. Asha’s husband and brother were astonished by this but, after some discussions, they agreed to back Asha up on her story.

over her dilemma, which was to choose between furthering her career and losing her family. I would put money on the fact that when she finally made her decision, it would be her career that was sacrificed. Another woman told me that she felt totally unappreciated and worthless, despite the fact that she, too, was a therapist, because her role was to be a wife, mother, housekeeper provider-to-everyone and nothing else was recognised.

Interestingly enough, there was one woman there (who I will call Julia) who did not have these issues. Julia was confident, joyful and was clearly there to have a good time and work hard. I talked to her towards the end of the conference and she told me that she had left her six-month old son and four year old daughter at home with her husband and mother-in-law and had come to have a good time despite the fact that she was no longer working as a therapist (by choice) because of her young children. She was very clear that she needed time for herself and made sure she got it; she did not stress about things and her degree of self-confidence was like a shining light in the gloom.

What set Julia apart from the other women there? She believed in herself and had a good sense of what she wanted and needed and made that clear. Julia managed to do all this without any appearance of arrogance or rudeness.

The reason I am telling you this is not to have a feminist rant (!) but to look at what it was about these women who couldn’t/wouldn’t value themselves. Certain their culture doesn’t encourage that kind of behaviour but Julia proved it could be done in a totally acceptable way. This applies just as much to men as to women; many men experience low self-esteem and the consequences of that. Lack of confidence and self-doubt might stem back to childhood, or they might have their roots in a recent event; redundancy, break up of a relationship, being bullied are just a few examples.

If we don’t value ourselves, feel good about ourselves, love ourselves, why would we expect anyone else to? If we look for approval and acceptance from others before we give it to ourselves, we will probably be disappointed.

Learning to value what we have and who we are boosts our self-esteem and we instantly become more attractive, in the broadest sense of the word. Who do you find attractive – what is it about them that attracts you? I am guessing that it isn’t just their looks. If you make a list of the people you love, and your name isn’t near the top of the list, what will you do to change that?

H aven House will be upping the glamour quotient this summer, with a number of exciting events, which will raise much

needed funds the Woodford Green children’s hospice.

The highlight of the West Essex social scene, the Duke of Essex Polo, will take place at Gaynes Park, Epping on Saturday 14th July. Haven House is proud to be the chosen charity for this star-studded event and tickets are now available for an exclusive VIP luncheon.

The glitz continues with a Charity Fashion Show at the Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel on Thursday 19th July. Join Haven House for a glamorous ladies fashion show organised by Wardrobe Mistresses and endorsed by Essex Fashion Week CEO, Adam Ryan.

N estled in the forest at the eastern end of Chingford, opposite Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, is a tennis club. Driving

along Rangers Road it is easily missed, hiding amongst the trees. But for the most famous tennis stars, Chingford’s Connaught Club was one of the most important places to play in the world.

The Connaught Club was created in 1885, only seven years after the ‘All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ at Wimbledon. The earliest details come from ‘Pastime’ magazine in June 1888 proving it was well established with 9 tennis courts, a full-size bowling green and an indoor tennis court under construction*. One of the Club’s first ‘world beater’ members was G.P. ‘Pat’ Hughes who trained on the courts. Pat is the only Englishman to ever win the Italian Open, and in Grand Slams he won the Dou-bles title at the French Open in 1933 and Australian Open in 1934 with Fred Perry. Later Pat Hughes teamed up with C.R.D. Tuckey and they won the Wimbledon Men’s Doubles in 1936.

In 1951, Harold Storer created a ‘Tennis Open Tournament’ at the Connaught Club. Many of the winners of this tournament went on to much greater things. One of the most prominent Women’s Cham-pions was Virginia Wade OBE in 1967. Virginia would go on to win the French and Australian Singles titles, the US, French and Australian Doubles titles, and Ladies Wimbledon Singles title in 1977.

One of the world’s greatest tennis players came to Chingford and lifted the men’s title. Rod Laver MBE played many times at the Connaught but only won the Club Championship once in 1962. Globally, Rod is remembered for over 200 championships won in the professional game. The same year as winning at the Connaught Club Rod became the first winner of

the tennis ‘Grand Slam’, winning the Australian, French and US Open Championships, and Wimble-don in one year. Rod Laver remains the only person to ever achieve this twice as he won the ‘Grand Slam’ again in 1969.

The Connaught Club’s Open Tournament contin-ued to draw the world’s top players to Chingford. Miss Angela Mortimer won the Connaught Champi-onship 6 times between 1955 and 1962. She also had time to become the World’s Number One female tennis player in 1961 and won the Australian, French and Wimbledon Championships.

Other world stars to win the Connaught Club title in Chingford include Denmark’s Torben Ulrich, who won at the age of just 16 in 1954. Although he did not win any Grand Slam events, he became the World’s Number One tennis player and his son is Lars Ulrich from the band ‘Metallica’. Not forgetting Englishman R.K. ‘Bobby’ Wilson who beat Rod Laver in Chingford, and won the Connaught title 5 times, but could only get to the Finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, finishing runner-up each time. So do keep a look out for any champions, from tennis or any other sport, you meet in the Mount or have seen on the Green!

A re you puzzled by depth of field? Do blown highlights and wonky horizons spoil your prints?

Would you like the opportunity to learn how to produce better pictures with your camera? Would you like to know how to make suc-cessful prints?

Do you want to take years off your self-portraits? Or inches off your waist?

Building on the success of last year's course, Chingford Photographic Society are again running their series of summer workshops. This is your opportunity to get to grips with the basics of your camera, or if you are an experienced user, learn more about composition, which lens for which situation, and how to develop your creativity.

The workshops incorporate tutorial informa-tion, hands on exercises and further tasks for you to carry out during the week to get you really used to using your camera.

If you own a camera – dust if off and come and join us. If you don't, then still come along – we will be able to give simple advice and answer any questions you may have to assist in your choice of camera.

Our aim is to take the mystery out of pho-tography. The friendly and flexible approach adopted by all of the society's course present-ers means that you will get out of the work-shops what you want, not what we think you want.

We also cover various simple techniques in ‘Photoshop', where you can learn simple tricks to bring out the best in your photo-graphs.

In fact, if there is any area of photography where you want to learn more, do drop us a line before the course commences, as we deliberately leave availability within the schedule to include any aspects of photogra-phy you want us to cover.

The six evenings, which are on Mondays, will start on 16th July 2012 between 8pm and 10pm. The six evenings are a complete course, and each person who signs up for it would be expected to attend all evenings to fully benefit.

The total cost for joining the workshop will be £50. Included in the cost will be all six evenings, one or two weekend outings PLUS full membership of the Society for a period of six months commencing after the final eve-ning.

S ummer and the beach can be a perfect combination. Sand castles, ice cream and lots of laughs. As long as the sun comes out. At the flicks, the ‘blockbuster’ and summer usually go together. As long as the film is fun. But

this month it’s better to go small scale than big budget. Enjoy!

Released: 3rd July - The Amazing Spider-Man Andrew Garfield replaces Tobey Maguire in the ‘new’ $220 million Spider-man film. The action sequences are sensational, especially if you can see the movie in 3D, and the villain, played by Rhys Ifans, is perfect. However, the plot involves discovering why Peter was changed into Spider-man and how this will affect the rest of his life. It may be a new film with a new Spider-Man but it feels old and tired.

13th July - Detachment A substitute teacher, who drifts from one school to another, suddenly finds a deep connection with students and teachers during his latest assignment. A simple story is beautifully told by English director Tony Kaye (American History X). There is no all star cast, Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is the lead, and certainly no action scenes. Just a good plot, excellent cinematography, moving characters and a lovely film.

20th July - I am Bruce Lee Bruce Lee is universally recognized as the pioneer who elevated martial arts in film to an art form, and this documentary reveals why Lee's flame burns brighter now than the day he died over three decades ago. The greatest martial artists, athletes, actors, film directors and celebrities of today share their feelings about the one who started it all. The "Father of Martial Arts Cinema" has an amazing legacy and it’s wonderful to watch.

27th July - Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax In a city where everything is artificial, a 12-year old boy called Ted searches for a real tree to impress the girl of his dreams. But to find one, Ted must discover the story of the Lorax, a grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. This is a good, entertaining film from the people who made Despicable Me. But, like that movie, it’s good without being great.

Matt Damon gives his all in the sweet We Bought A Zoo (16th July on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99). If all that sounds too much Mirror Mirror (30th July on DVD rrp: £14.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £19.99) is a classic re-telling of Snow White for all the family.
