David Young W elcome to the

January and February edition of

The Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. A Happy New Year to all of our readers from all of us. I like New Year. It brings with it that feeling of hope, the notion that things may change for the bet-ter, the inevitable vows that we

make each year, the ensuing realisation that we probably won’t stick to these promises for more than a couple of hours, the immediate fear there-upon that things in fact will just get worse, the dawn-ing idea that the year ahead is going to be full of tribulations, the fact that it’s still winter and it’s only going to get worse and worse until mid-May or so. And it’s dark by noon. There’s nothing on TV. Ever. I don’t really think that I like New Year at all, come to think of it. I want the old one back. That was great. Life was one long laugh, every day was a pleasure, we were all younger and fitter. I seem to recall that

golden coins showered down upon us from above and love and peace filled the world.

Oh well. Happy New Year all the same.

I t’s no fun getting old. You stop growing. You groan when the weather changes. Bright young things come along and look just so much better

than you do. Then some clever so-and-so comes along and lops bits off the top of you. It’s no fun at all being a tree.

Epping Forest has got an awful lot of trees in it. This may not come as news to the sharper amongst our readers. If it didn’t have so many trees, we’d have to call it a field. But it’s a forest, with trees, and, of these trees, about 50,000 are classified as Veteran Trees. What’s a one of them? And how does a vet-eran tree differ from an ancient tree? Well, I’m very glad you asked me.

An ancient tree is defined as one that is ceasing to grow – its annual rings are getting narrower, the poor old thing can’t support so many leaves, and its crown begins to die back. A veteran tree, on the

other hand, is one that has developed these same symptoms, but not because of its age. Rather, dam-age or outside forces have caused it to cease grow-ing. An analogy would be a nice old gentleman who has reached maturity with good grace, as opposed to me, who has become embittered and irritable, not naturally, but through a lifetime spent supporting Tottenham.

Most of Epping Forest’s veteran trees are pol-larded, mainly beech, hornbeam and oak. What’s a pollard? Well, if you keep interrupting, I’m going to get very veteran indeed. Pollarding is the old practice of lopping trees at a height of about 2 metres, to harvest timber in such a way that the ensuing growth is out of the reach of grazing deer. Pollarding virtu-ally ceased in 1878 when the City of London as-sumed the protection of the Forest. Hence the pol-larded trees that we see have a very characteristic

shape, of massive trunks supporting taller, thinner shoots that now look rather precarious. Epping Forest was not always such dense woodland. In former centuries it consisted of woodland pasture, a more open landscape, providing a source of sustainable tim-ber and forage.

The City of London occasionally uses pollarding still, to extend the life of the trees and to create a habitat favourable to grasses and wild flowers.

A second technique of harvesting timber is called coppicing, but this was used only seldom in Epping Forest. What’s a coppice? Well, if you’d only stop interrupting, I’d tell you. Coppicing is where the timber is harvested at ground level, and the new shoots develop as a cluster of trunks. The problem would then be that the roaming deer would gobble up the delicious new sprigs. So Epping Forest isn’t very heavily coppiced.

But there are coppards. What…? I warned you. I’m going to go off in a sulk in a moment. A coppard is a coppiced growth that has subsequently been pollarded. When combining the words pollard and coppice, they went for the word coppard rather than pollice because the police hadn’t been invented. I think. Might be wrong.

The area of Forest across the road from the new Visitor Centre and the Hunting Lodge is a textbook bit of woodand pasture. This is Barn Hoppitt, a

curvy, rolling area of old trees interspersed with saplings and grassy mounds that cradle small ponds of herons hiding in rushes and reeds. Very idyllic. It’s where I go for my lunch. There are 343 veteran oak pollards here. (Incidentally, I’ve got this ongoing competition with a colleague of mine, to find obscure parts of the Forest that the other cannot name, and I recently scored a resounding suc-cess with Tippa Brook – he countered with Broom Hill – so we were all square. Desperate to win, I’ve renamed an oak on Barn Hoppitt as – guess what - Young’s Oak – I’m nothing if not egomaniacal – and he’s not found it yet. As you see, those of us who work in Epping Forest live life pretty much on the edge.)

There are all sorts of delightful circuits that you can invent, starting from the new Visitor Centre (The View, mentioned in previous articles) then heading off through Barn Hoppitt and down to Whitehall Plain, across to Connaught Water, or up Dannet's Hill through the grazing longhorn cattle. Or come back by the way that you left, and crest the brow of the hill to see the venerable triptych of white historic buildings appear like ogres on the horizon. Butler’s, the Lodge and The View. Keep an eye open for Young’s Oak, but don’t tell my mate. He’s still looking.

T o be the best, reach the top or become a World Champion one needs dedication. Could you change your nationality, give up

every day to training and push yourself beyond your limits? Squash legend Peter Nicol MBE has done all this and more since moving to Chingford. As he himself says “it’s worth it to be the best in the world.” (1)

Peter “The Boss” Nicol was born on 5th April 1973 in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire. He excelled at all sports as a child but started to concentrate on squash aged 8. Throughout his teenage years Peter made rapid progress through the Scottish squash ranks but in 1992 a chance encounter changed his life. Peter met David Pearson, the England squash coach, who put him in contact with Neil Harvey. Up until 1990 Neil had been a professional squash player, reaching Number 12 in the world rankings, and was coaching at the Connaught Club, Ching-ford. In April of 1992, Peter Nicol came to Ching-ford to meet Neil Harvey and stayed.

Training every day in Chingford, Peter Nicol soon turned professional and immediately broke into the world’s top 10 players. In 1998 he became the first British player to hold the World Number 1 ranking. Peter would hold that title for a total of 60 months during his career including a continuous 24 months stint at the top of the world rankings in 2002 and 2003. 1998 would bring other successes too. Peter won a Commonwealth Gold medal and became the British Open Champion. The following year Peter Nicol became the world squash champion winning the World Open in Egypt and was made an MBE for his services to sport.

In 2001 Peter Nicol made the newspaper head-lines but not for his playing. He decided to change his allegiance from Scotland to England. Having won 66 international caps for Scotland Peter went on to win 46 caps for England. The move has brought even more success with Peter again winning an individual Commonwealth Gold medal in 2006 and team golds in 2002 and 2006. He has also won the World Team Championships with England in 2005.

Peter Nicol MBE is the most successful British squash player of all time having won 59 professional titles around the world and appearing in 69 finals. Since his retirement in 2006 Peter has become instrumental in training the squash stars of the future. So do keep a look out for any future sports stars you meet in the Mount or have seen on the Green!

T he Kip McGrath Education Centre in Chingford was opened

in 2009 and provides professional tuition in Maths and English to children from primary and secondary schools. The tuition can help to provide the encouragement and support needed to help them achieve their full potential. All tutors are qualified and experienced with valid CRBs. Who are Kip McGrath? Kip McGrath started the first Education Centres in Australia more than 25 years ago. The innovative programmes and approaches to teaching and learning were so successful that there are now over 600 centres around the world.

Kip McGrath Centres have been operating in the UK for over 15 years. There are more than 250 centres in the UK with many opening each year. ASSESSMENT A free assessment is carried out at the centre to find out where a child has difficulties and so deter-mine what they need to learn. A confidential discus-sion with parents follows to discuss how a child can be helped, and an individual programme of study is devised to meet their needs. Children are tutored by teachers in small ability based groups with a maximum of 5 per group. Each child is given individ-ual help during the session where a variety of teach-ing methods are used including audio, computer programs, graded textbooks and workbooks, all specifically designed to support their work in school.

MATHS The Maths structured work programme is designed to develop children’s confidence. It starts from early number skills to higher Maths concepts. The pro-gramme caters for children with difficulty for exam-ple with learning times tables & mental arithmetic to work at GCSE level.

Science tuition is also offered but only at Secon-dary level. ENGLISH Many children need extra help at some point in their school life. They may experience difficulty with reading, spelling or grammar. The Kip McGrath tutoring offers carefully structured programmes to help develop a child’s English from early literacy stages up to higher order reading and writing skills.

At secondary level the tuition can help to raise attainment and specifically GCSE grades. At primary school level the tuition can help to build confidence in basic subjects and as a result boost self-esteem. For example children in years 1 & 2 may need sup-port to develop their reading skills. There is also provision for 7+ and 11+ private school entry tui-tion as well as SATS. ESSAY WRITING COURSE An essay writing course is offered for students at Secondary, Sixth Form and University level. KIP McGRATH CHINGFORD The Kip McGrath centre is easy to find at the cor-ner of New Road and Chingford Mount Road with its entrance on New Road opposite Iceland.

Each teaching session lasts for 1 hour 20 minutes with both Maths and English being covered in that time. The initial assessment is free and there is no cost for enrolment. However, a deposit for one lesson is payable on enrolment which is held until the student withdraws.

Fees of £25 a session are payable for 4 weeks at a time with the recommendation of one session a week. This may increase near exam time if it is felt necessary.

I met Koasar Malik who established the Kip

McGrath Centre in Chingford. This is what she said, “I took a very brave and tough decision to go in to Kip McGrath as a non teacher. This was back in 2008. I was giving up my job to bring up my children and thought I needed a challenge.

99% of the centres worldwide are teacher owned. What led me to do it? I thought to myself, what opportunities are there in the area for my daughter? (She was 2 at the time but I like to think ahead.) I could probably help her until the end of primary but what will happen when she reaches secondary school?

It was a very tough decision. I discussed it with my husband Ali who himself runs a very successful business. And he was quite open about it and told me point blank, ‘What do you know about teaching? You will never be able to run it.’

Well, I may not know anything about teaching but

I certainly know a lot about my children and all children need the same when it comes to education up until a certain age. I was determined.

Now I can see that it is making a difference and that makes me happy. There have been many ups and downs as all businesses in their genesis go through many peaks and troughs.

Last year I took maternity leave as my son was born in September. I had to take the back seat and let others run it. This turned out to be the most difficult time for Kip McGrath. However, we bounced back quickly this year and are continuing to do what we are good at doing. 99.9% of the customers are happy. And what’s more! Kip are delivering!

We do an honest job and don’t just emphasise on getting ‘bums on seats’. We give the right advice even if it means the customer will not enrol. We don’t just load up parents and children with work-sheets and booklets and expect them to learn. Our emphasis is on teaching, which is why we employ teachers with proper teaching experience from UK schools. We pay them a decent wage, which is why they like to work for us. As aforementioned Kip McGrath centres employ only qualified teachers to teach our students. All staff are CRB checked and the Centre is now in the process of registering with Ofsted.”

Rob, the teacher who manages the Centre had this to say, “The formal structured programmes help children learn. I love teaching at Kip McGrath as I can see that children are being helped and my teaching is making a big difference. I get real job satisfaction as I see the children make progress especially when they tell me they love coming to Kip McGrath.

The Centre is a fun and relaxing place to come and learn. As a tutor my hands are not tied by red tape. Students respect their tutors and the environ-ment.

I believe that building relationships with students is very important as it restores confidence in some and builds self belief and self esteem in others.”

Volunteers improve access to Connaught Water

T he City of London Corporation has com-pleted improvement works to the much-loved local landmark, Connaught Water on

Rangers Road near Chingford. Volunteers have been busy constructing two ac-

cessible angling platforms and a boardwalk across the lake.

Aquatic planting by volunteers has significantly improved the habitat with the addition of species such as water mint, reeds, water lily and water for-get-me-not.

The new plants have been surrounded with tem-porary fencing to protect them from water fowl and dogs until they are established - after a year or so.

The City of London Corporation’s dedicated Lakes and Ponds Task Force volunteers joined forces with the Scouts and Ranger Guides – who came from all over the UK - the Challenge Network, Youth Reha-bilitation and the Epping Forest Centenary Trust over the summer and autumn to build the board-walk.

Volunteer Development Officer, Martin Whitfield, said: “Working with the young people was a fantastic experience; they were so enthusiastic. Those involved worked incredibly hard and they should feel very proud of themselves for what they have managed to achieve in such a short time.”

This is the culmination of improvements at Con-

naught Water, which also include a new accessible path, more seating, car park resurfacing with five disabled spaces, and the introduction of a way-marked trail linking Connaught Water to the newly refurbished Butler’s Retreat café and the brand new Visitor Centre, The View.

The works were undertaken by GC Tilhill to the designs of landscape architects, Chris Blandford Associates and funded by the Heritage Lottery fund-ing as part of the City’s Branching Out project. Prior to the works, 205,000 visits were recorded at Con-naught Water in 2010 and the site will be re-surveyed in 2014.

Gordon Haines, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Epping Forest Committee, who opened the boardwalk said: “The generous support from Heritage Lottery Fund, and the dedication of our wonderful team of volunteers, is enabling us to greatly improve the experience for visitors to Epping Forest. The boardwalk at Connaught Water provides a new opportu-nity to walk amongst the reeds and observe the colourful aquatic wildlife.”

EF &CC Chairman Alderman Gordon Haines, who officially opened the Boardwalk is 3rd from the right

South Chingford Community Library

C hingford’s newest library, not yet a year old, celebrated Christmas in style with two Diamond Jubilee

parties. The South Chingford Community Library (SCCL), run entirely by unpaid volunteers, opened in April 2012 on the site of the former Waltham Forest Direct shop in Chingford Mount Road. Conception It was during 2011 that we learnt that South Chingford Branch Library was ear-marked for closure as part of the Council’s essential cost-cutting measures. During that Summer, library visitors were can-vassed on their willingness to set up and run a volun-teer community library, in the event of petitioning, and all other efforts, failing to prevent closure. This action was spearheaded by Councillor Jemma Hem-sted of Valley Ward. Closure of the old library was later confirmed, and the doors closed for the last time on Friday 2nd December 2011. However, a meeting took place at Waltham Forest Town Hall on the following Monday, with councillors and members of the public in attendance, which sowed the seed for a new Community Library.

A major consideration was finding a suitable site for such an enterprise. By coincidence, a further aspect of the financial savings was the closure at the end of the summer of the Waltham Forest Direct shop at 265 Chingford Mount Road. The Council kindly made the premises available for the new li-brary. Members of the local community with longer memories will recall this as the site of Rossi's Ice Cream shop, a delightful establishment which had a counter which served directly to the passing public on the pavement, and which also had a wide variety of toys on offer when you ventured inside.

To assist with the enterprise, the Council also provided equipment, including furniture and com-puters, as well as some 8000 books,. The early months of 2012 were a period of feverish activity. After a series of trail openings, Saturday April 14th, opening day, arrived. Opening Day The opening was attended by a number of special guests, including our local MP, the Rt. Hon Iain Dun-can Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. After welcoming addresses, the formal opening was performed by the (then) Mayor of Waltham Forest, Councillor Geoffrey Walker. Later in the day, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, dropped in to lend his encouragement and support.

All were in agreement that the opening went very well indeed. Where we are now With time now for new skills to bed in, the running of the library has settled into a routine. However, much work still needs to be done. Opening hours have steadily increased as more volunteers are re-cruited and trained, and the library is now open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, from 10AM to 4PM. Regular weekly activities have begun, or are in preparation, including a knitting group, parent and toddler group, French classes, and a book club. Rooms are also available for hire, on a one-off basis, or for regular events.

Importantly, in the current economic climate, a job club is in operation on Wednesdays, with financial support from the Council, where members can receive assistance with CV writing and online job searching. The club is run in partnership with the Government’s JobCentre Plus scheme. East Tenders, a local organisation professionally qualified to give

advice on employment and job seeking, is also pro-viding support. The club has only been in operation since mid September, but already two volunteers have found work after gaining customer service skills while working in the library, where the support received gave them additional confidence for their job interviews. A further volunteer is at a second interview stage.

Slowly, awareness of the new library situation in South Chingford is increasing. We are making use of social media and a website, as well as word of mouth and local outlets, to publicise our activities.

The way ahead The volunteers are the lifeblood of the library, and more are needed to maintain, and then extend, the opening hours. Special skills are always of interest (we have no-one with library experience, for exam-ple) and we are always keen to hear of people wish-ing to start new weekly groups. We are currently beginning the process of applying for charitable status, which is important for the financial viability of the project. Most new library visitors are aware by now that the old library in Hall Lane is closed, but many are still surprised that we are independent of the council library network, and that our books are therefore not interchangeable with those from the rest of the libraries in Waltham Forest.

Rob illustrates this in an analogy to a plant, “You sow the seed in healthy soil, it gets air, water and sun and grows.”

Koasar again; “The best thing for Kip McGrath is to have decent and very committed teachers like Rob and others who would rather not be named. We like to credit our tutors for the hard work and determination to get these children to learn. Our tutors have proved many a time that teaching is not just a job. The study programmes combined with very committed and hard working tutors helps Kip McGrath succeed.” Perhaps the best testimonials come from the students themselves. Here are some examples: “I like Kip McGrath because it helps me. Rob helps me to really improve my work. Before I came to Kip McGrath I really needed help to write and make my work better but now I have come I find it really easy to do anything with Literacy and it also feels like home. Rob really makes you believe in yourself much more.” Natasha “I like my teacher because he is funny and he helps me a lot. This centre has helped me im-prove my Maths and English. This place is the

funniest place to come to because you make new friends and they make learning fun. I enjoy my lessons when my teacher makes me laugh and when I get on with my work peacefully. I like coming to Kip McGrath because it helps me to keep up with my school work.” Alexis “It is very nice here. I have improved in my schoolwork a lot since I have been coming here. The teachers are very caring and helpful. It is a very relaxing place to go to, it is some-where that you can go and do work quietly and calmly. The other students and I really enjoy it here.” Sananthan

The Chingford Directory

A new year begins with a bang. Or a gong. The BAFTA and Academy Awards will reward the best films, actors and technicians with little statues. This year will be interesting as there are no clear favourites

to win in any of the categories. The only certainty is none of the films at the cinema will win ‘Best Film’ but they are worth watching. Enjoy!

Released: 1st January - The Impossible Telling the complete story of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed over 250,000 people would be impossible. So this film concentrates on the true story of a British couple, played by Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, who were separated when the wave hit their resort. While you can engage with the narrative this is an average film with one sensational ten minute se-quence of when the wave hits.

11th January - Les Misérables Oscar award-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) has created a visually impressive adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh’s musical. The plot centres on Jean Valjean, played enthrallingly by Hugh Jackman, a French peasant searching for redemption after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. But it’s not strictly a musical and simple lines being continually sung becomes infuriating.

1st February - Flight Denzel Washington stars as Captain Whip Whitaker, a hard-drinking, drug-addicted party boy. Who is also an airline pilot. One day his quick thinking saves hundreds of people during a plane crash and he becomes an overnight hero. However, this brings his crazy lifestyle to the surface. This is not an action film but an engaging character study and the more Capt. Whitaker’s life falls apart, the more you’ll be rooting for him.

22nd February - Cloud Atlas An ‘unfilmable’ book makes it to the big screen. There are 6 different time-lines from a runaway slave in 1800 to a post apocalyptic battle between the last humans on Earth. This is not confusing though as instead of a plot the narrative follows from theme to theme. There is a stellar cast and fabulous special effects but that is not crucial as it is the story- telling that makes this movie epic.

DVDs to please There are some good films released but television fans are really in for a treat. Dredd (14th Jan on DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) is an ultra-violent action film and Looper (28th Jan DVD rrp: £11.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £18.99) is a stunning sci-fi thriller. Re- live your favourite rac-ing in Formula One Season 2012 (7th Jan on DVD rrp: £17.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £24.99). Mer-lin - Complete Series 5 (21st Jan on DVD rrp: £24.99 and Blu- Ray rrp: £29.99) will be loved by the whole family and Great British Railway Journeys: Series 3 (21st Jan on DVD rrp: £29.99 and Blu-Ray rrp: £39.99) to relax. Enjoy!

NEWS FROM Beverley Tankard at THE BOOKSHOP, North Chingford The Little Bookshop with the Big Heart!

A re you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin …. let’s start with some-thing a bit fun! Every family has a littl’un who at some stage likes to bare all (such fun reminding them of it when they get to, say age 17 or

so) and Nuddy Ned, brought to us by Kes Gray and Gary Parsons, tells the story of Naughty Ned – who loves to be in the nuddy! Can anyone persuade him to put some clothes on in this rollicking rhyming read? Price £6.99 – 20% OFF - You pay £5.59*

Underground, Overground – no, we’re not wombling free, but blending reportage, humour and personal encounters. Andrew Martin brings us a won-derfully engaging social history of London's underground railway system (which despite its name, is in fact fifty-five per cent overground). Why is the Victoria Line so hot? What is an Electrical Multiple Unit? Is it really possible to ride from King's Cross to King's Cross on the Circle line? The London Underground is the oldest, most sprawling and illogical metropolitan transport system in the world, the result of a series of botch-jobs and improvisations. Yet it transports over one billion passengers every year - and this figure is rising. It is iconic, recognised the world over, and loved and despised by Londoners in equal measure. Underground, Overground is a highly enjoyable, witty and informative history of everything you need to know about the Tube. Price £8.99 – 20% OFF - You pay £7.19*

A Nurse at the Front: The First World War Diaries of Sister Edith Appleton, has been edited by Ruth Cowan and has been produced in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum. This book tells a story that is rarely seen in diary format: the experiences of a nurse working close to the Western Front in the First World War. Incredibly, Edith Appleton served in France for the whole of the conflict. Her bravery and dedication won her the Military OBE, the Royal Red Cross and the Belgian Queen Elizabeth medal among others. Her diary details with compassion all the horrors of the 'war to end wars', including the first use of poison gas and the terrible cost of battles such as Ypres, but she also records what life was like for nurses and how she spent her time off-duty. There are moments of humour amongst the tragedy, and even lyrical accounts of the natural beauty that still ex-isted amidst all the destruction. Price £7.99 – 20% OFF - You pay £6.39*
