To what extent was Jamestown successful at creating a British presence in the New World?
Throughout the 16th century Spain capitalized on the abundance of resources found in the New World. Quickly other countries recognized the potential for the accumulation of wealth in the Americas and competition for control of its resources began. After the failure of the Roanoke colony, Great Britain staked its claim in Jamestown in 1607. Due to disease, swampy land, and a lack of skilled laborers many of the early settlers did not survive. Despite these early troubles, John Rolfe’s introduction of tobacco transformed Jamestown into a thriving colony. The success of Jamestown increased British immigration to the New World and set a foundation for the plantation system that spread throughout the South, but the British did not truly make their presence known until they established commercial domination in the New England and Middle colonies in the early 18th century.
