electrical

when gathering project information on site, note location of the main electrical panel & its rated amperage capacity

CODE: Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet protection is required on all receptacles servicing countertop surfaces in the kitchen and bath

all power outlets in the bath can be controlled on one circuit interrupter—power can be easily reset using button on primary outlet

well-designed lighting of the utmost importance in bathrooms

typical mistake—recessed downlight over sink•harsh light hitting top of head•long dark shadows appear under eyes, nose & chin

typical mistake—one surface-mounted above mirror•illuminates top of face•bottom half falls into shadow•especially hard light by which to shave

lighting for tubs and showers

recessed luminaires•render the upper-third of shower or tub area a little dimmer•do a better job of reducing glare•allow the use of higher wattage bulbs

CODE: All light fixtures installed within tub and shower spaces should be rated and marked “suitable for damp/wet locations”.

Switches shall not be installed within wet locations in tub or shower spaces or within reach while standing in the tub or shower unless installed as part of the listed tub or shower assembly.

CODE: Hanging fixtures [such as chandeliers over tubs] cannot be located within a zone of 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold.

ambient lighting

indirect lighting adds a warm overall glow•wall sconces•cove lighting

can find both in fluorescent or led lamps to comply with title 24

if higher ceilings, pendant-hung units are also a consideration

skylights

supplement/replace ambient lighting during day:•white opal acrylic•UV filters specified•if light-well is deep enough, low-maintenance fluorescent/led strip-lights can be used to keep skylight lit at night

exhaust fans

not required if operable windowsnice to have to remove steam and odors

make sure to specify separate switching for light & fan—if allowed by code
