SIP Trunking – connectingbusiness PBXs to operator’s SIPbased telephony infrastructurevia IP instead of TDM lines – hasopened up new market segmentsand new business opportunitiesfor telecom operators. The shiftto IP-PBXs at the customer sitesand to IP based infrastructureat the carrier side, is makingSIP Trunking an obviousdevelopment. Today, almostevery ISP, broadband provider ortelco in general are planning tooffer or are already offering SIPTrunking services.
However, getting businesscustomers’ telephony traffi c isn’t
just about having a good serviceand rolling it out over a good IPpipe (dedicated/managed or overthe Internet) – one also has to beable to connect the service to thecustomer’s PBX in the customer’senvironment. Having a SIP Trunkinginterface on an IP-PBX is notsuffi cient!
Most obvious is the fi rewall/NATtraversal problem. Modern IPphones and IP-PBXs reside on thebusiness LAN that is protected bya fi rewall. But SIP communicationdoes not pass ordinary fi rewalls oreven NATs. A NAT/fi rewall traversalmethod is required, which is oneof the functions the IX78 E-SBC
provides. The IX78 E-SBC has bothan Ethernet and an ADSL WANinterface.
In addition, there are many variants of the SIP capabilities and implementations in PBXs as well asthe trunking service and delivery, something that the IX78 E-SBC cannormalize. The picture below showsthe functions and benefi ts the IX78E-SBC brings when SIP Trunkingvarious types of PBXs.

Why may an E-SBC be required to connect a PBX?1) NAT/Firewall Traversal – Must NAT to same address space!
2) Basic SIP and Network Interoperability - E.g. Authentication, Registrations, UDP/TLS/TCP, Dynamic IP address, etc.
3) SIP Repair - E.g. Call Transfer, Fragmented packets, Bugs, etc.
4) Features - E.g. Remote Users, Administration (remote and local)
5) Security - E.g. Will LAN be opened? Is the PBX designed to be public?

Intertex’s sister company Ingateis well known in the SIP Trunkingmarket. While the Ingate productsaddress larger installations, Intertex products are focused on the SOHO and SBE higher volume market segment. Both companies cooperate closely and share the SIP development and interoperability testing against the various PBXs, and can therefore offer the most comprehensive interoperability listing.
Below is a screenshot from theinstallation wizard we have created for Swedish incumbent telco Telia, for their “Telia SIP-anslutning” service (8 simultaneous calls).
Every installation is done with an IX78 E-SBC and the service is either delivered over ADSL 2+ Annex M with a quality assured PVC for the voice, or on their managed business Internet service with Ethernet termination. The IX78 E-SBC handles both the voice and data traffi c (with QoS), or optionally, only the voice traffi c.
The Intertex IX78 E-SBC offerssolutions for all types of SIPtrunking services and IP-PBXs (and
conventional PBXs with an addedIP/SIP interface). It has a capacityfor 50 simultaneous calls over thetrunk.
Without an Intertex type of CPE, aSIP Trunking service will only reacha limited portion of the market;only a few types of PBXs can beconnected, or a connection mayrequire that the customer have to (re)install his local IP-PBX telephony in a way that inhibits unifi ed communication and other expected functions and features of his telephony system.
With the Intertex IX78 E-SBCdeployed as part of the SIPTrunking service, your service will be able to connect all types of PBXs with SIP Trunking interface.
The IX78 E-SBC lets the customer’s IP-PBX remain connected to the LAN and the customer can use both phones and PC clients as well as WLAN connected mobile phones as part of their telephony solution.
Remote users (e.g. home workers and road warriors) using SIP clients can also connect to the PBX over the Internet.
