◦ Hands-on Learners

◦ Auditory Learners

Communication happens when one person sends a message to another person

Send message in variety of ways including facial expressions, gestures or words

We send message for different reasons, ask for helps or to share an idea

What Is Communication

• Interaction occurs whenever you & your child do things together & respond to one another

• Basis of two way communication

• Children with ASD have some degree of difficulty interacting with others because of their learning style & sensory needs

Your child may not be saying any words, but communication is more than words

How your child communicates

Your child may communicate in some of the following ways:

◦ Cry & scream◦ Take your hand ◦ Look at what he wants◦ Look/point at what he wants and than look back

at you◦ Make sounds◦ Use word◦ Echolalia

Pre-intentional Intentional

◦ For different reasons Protesting or refusing Requesting Social purpose And for more reasons

Look at WHY Your Child Communicates

If your child isn’t talking, you’ll likely want to teach him to say some words

If your child is already talking, conversation

Both these goals – talking & conversation can only be achieved in small step

Set realistic expectations for your child

Set Goals by Using Your Knowledge about Your Child

Your child will be successful communicator if you help him to achieve 4 goals:

Connection what you say &

what’s happening

Communicate in new ways

Communicate for new reasons

Use your child’s preferences Use your child’s learning style One step at a time:

◦ Get your child enjoy his interaction with you◦ Set up situations for your child to communicate

intentionally starting with requests◦ Elicit your child response via OWL

Begin helping your child achieve his communications goals

Ways to help your child make request:

◦ Within his view but out of his reach◦ Use people toys◦ Give things bit by bit◦ Give all but one
