What is NORM

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)

Consist of materials, usually industrial wastes or by-

products enriched with radioactive elements found in

the environment, such

as uranium, thorium and potassium and any of their

decay products, such as radium and radon.

Ionising radiation

Ionising radiation (ionizing radiation) is radiation that

carries enough energy to

free electrons from atoms or molecules, thereby ionizing

them. Ionizing radiation is made up of energetic subatomic

particles, ions or atoms moving at high speeds (usually

greater than 1% of the speed of light), and electromagnetic

waves on the high-energy end of the electromagnetic

spectrum.

An ion is an atom, or a molecule, in which the total

number of electrons is not equal to the total number

of protons, giving the atom or molecule a net positive or

negative electrical charge

Radiation

Radium radionuclides emit alpha and beta

particles as well as gamma rays. The radiation

emitted from a radium 226 atom is 96% alpha

particles and 4% gamma rays. The alpha

particle is not the most dangerous particle

associated with NORM. Alpha particles are

helium nuclei. Alpha particles travel short

distances in air, of only 2–3 cm, and cannot

penetrate through a dead layer of skin on the

human body.

Alfa, Beta & Gamma

Alpha particles : Consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a

particle identical to a helium nucleus. They are generally produced in the process

of alpha decay, but may also be produced in other ways.

beta particle : Sometimes called beta ray, is a high-energy, high-

speed electron or positron emitted in the radioactive decay of an atomic nucleus,

such as a potassium-40 nucleus, in the process of beta decay.

Gamma rays : Are penetrating electromagnetic radiation of a kind arising from

the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. It consists of photons in the highest

observed range of photon energy.

Radiation

However, some radium alpha particle emitters

are "bone seekers" due to radium possessing a

high affinity for chloride ions. In the case that

radium atoms are not expelled from the body,

they concentrate in areas where chloride ions

are prevalent, such as bone tissue. The half-

life for radium 226 is approximately 1,620

years, and will remain in the body for the

lifetime of the human — a significant length of

time to cause damage.

NORM Hazard

The hazards associated with NORM are

inhalation and ingestion routes of entry

as well as external exposure where there

has been a significant accumulation of

scales. Respirators may be necessary in

dry processes, where NORM scales and

dust become air borne and have a

significant chance to enter the body.

Maximum Annual effective dose received from

occupational exposure as a radiological worker (MECA)

10 mSv (MECA)

Annual effective dose received from occupational

exposure as a radiological worker 5 mSv

Classified radiological worker is someone who may

receive an annual effective dose exceeding this limit 2 mSv

Exposure Limits

Anyone likely to receive a dose exceeding 2

mSv/year shall be classified as a radiation worker

and wear a Thermoluminescent Dose (TLD) Badge

whilst working with NORM. (SP 1170)

The maximum dose a classified radiation worker

may receive in a calendar year is 10 mSv/year as per

MD249/97 and 20 mSv/year according to the Ministry

of Manpower.

As best practice followed by PDO advised to adopt

the lower dose limit. Any worker receiving 10 mSv in

one year shall be removed from working with any

ionising sources. (SP 1170)
