volo, velle, volui, no 4th p.p.
• What is the one thing you notice about this verb that indicates it is irregular?
• There is no 4th principal part.• Is there anything else that seems unusual?
• The 2nd principal part does not have -re• Does the 3rd principal part seem typical?
• Well it ends in – i like most other 3rd principal parts.• What conclusions can we make?
Conclusions
• We will not be using the 2nd principal part like we normally do.
• Since it is the 2nd principal part that forms the present, imperfect and future, it is these tenses that are irregular.
• We will use the 3rd principal part as we always have. So the perfect, pluperfect and future perfect tenses will be regular.
Here is another way to look at things.
• MEMORIZE the present, imperfect and future tenses of these new verbs.
• The other tenses follow the same steps as ALL other verbs, so review those steps from your folder. By the other tenses, I mean the perfect, pluperfect and future perfect.
On the next slide you will see the principal parts for the new verbs.
MEMORIZE THESE PRINCIPAL PARTS.
PRINCIPAL PARTS
• volo, velle, volui - want, be willing, wish • nolo, nolle, nolui - -not want, be
unwilling, not wish• malo, malle, malui - prefer
Important Information
• The present tense of these verbs is the most irregular. You will have to memorize the forms.
• The imperfect and future are irregular because they do not follow a set of steps, but…
• The imperfect and future are easier because they have an easier pattern to learn.
• There are NO PASSIVE forms to learn.
