Mongols: How Barbaric Were the “Barbarians”?

Barbaric, adj: a cultural level more complex than primitive savagery but less sophisticated than advanced civilization.

Analyze and takes notes on each of the ten documents.

Document #1:

Evidence: Describe the main idea of the document. Summarize.

The map shows the extent of the Mongol empire, which stretches from the Pacific all the way to the edge of Europe. It was the largest empire in all world history, but the map also shows that the Mongols were defeated as they tried to expand. For example, storms off Japan repelled the Mongols in 1274 and 1281.

Analysis: How does this evidence support (or refute) the question? Is this is positive or negative? Explain!

Because the empire was so large and influenced so many people, it doesn’t seem like the Mongols could have been all that barbaric. Didn’t they need to be clever and organized in order to conquer all that territory? Also, many areas they controlled probably had “advanced” civilizations, even after the Mongol conquest.
