Katherinites having a ball

Kim Louwrens and Sally Pannifex enjoy a hit, while dark clouds merge the rain holds off.

THE tennis gods are shining on Katherine at themoment.

Despite the constant wet weather recently, Tuesdaynight Social Tennis has gone ahead for two weeks ina row now.

The gloomy looking weather might have kept a fewpeople away last week, but the contingent that did turnup was able to have a good hit.

Lewis and Paul battled it out in singles with new-comer Paul finishing up as the easy winner 6-2 overLewis the seasoned Katherinite.

Meanwhile, Greg and Sally gave Kim a quick ten-nis clinic and she promptly acquired a nice little back-hand.

Harley and Sally then teamed up in a mixed dou-bles match against Lewis and Niamh. Niamh is prov-ing to be a quick improver. Lewis and her came backfrom 0-2 down to win the set 6-4.

Meanwhile on ‘show court 1,’ Paul's booming servedeserted him in his match against Greg.

This let Greg off the hook and he won the set 1-7but it won't be so one-sided next time.

To finish off the night, Paul and Lewis had a goodwin in a set of men's doubles, defeating Harley andGreg 6-3.

Tuesday night Social tennis happens each week atthe Katherine Tennis Club (weather permitting).

To join in, just come along from 6:30pm onwardsfor a 7:00pm start.

SOCIAL TENNIS REPORT BY GREG DICKSON

Sally Pannifex has the eye of the tiger as shedrives a double-handed backhand with force.

Master of spinhas gone missing

NOT a great start to the year. The Katherine Bowls Club has ap-

peared to have lost it’s highly accreditedreporter.

After a couple of years hiatus, MattyToucher was to make a much anticipatedreturn to print media but he seems to bemissing in action.

If anyone knows the whereabouts ofthis master of spin, please point him inthe direction of his computer so we canonce again marvel at his highly accurate, totally captivating weekly bowls reports.

Red Rooster Jack Pot PairsIn the meantime, it is my pleasure to

announce that the Tuesday Night RedRooster Jackpot Pairs has commencedfor 2014 (all be it weather permitting). The current jackpot stands at a massive$10 as Fiona and Julie took home thejackpot a couple of weeks ago.

Last Tuesday saw the rain hold offuntil we had finished play and we wereall inside for the calling of the cards or inother words enjoying the taste of our firstbeer. Master of Ceremonies for Tuesdaynight’s is Mal Trattles who was curiouslymissing in action (Could it be that hewas searching to locate Matty Toucher?)

On rink two was a truly captivatinggame of triples between Higgo, Fionaand Woodsy taking on Dave C, Hayleyand Mick.

This game had everything includingmadness and mayhem with some excel-lent bowling thrown in for good mes-sage.

Woodsy’s Team held a narrow lead ofone shot going into the final end of play.

It was anyone’s game but alas Mick’smagic disappeared when he needed itmost.

Woodsy’s Team entered the clubhouse as winners of the game and the

Red Rooster Chickens as well. The game on rink 3 was a seesawing

affair with Sandy as swinging lead forLauren and Bron as well as Dave J andSnake. Sandy failed to fire.

Lauren and Dave J were hit and missso the teams relied on the skill of theirskips Bron and Snake and what a greatbattle that was.

Great bowling Bron and Snake undersome trying conditions. Well done toBron’s team who eventually took out thismatch.

If you want to be part of the action onTuesday Night’s, head of the KatherineBowls Club and put your name down by6pm and be ready to play by 6.30pm.

JuniorsWow! What a journey our juniors are

on. They have competed at the highestlevel at the Australian Championships inOctober 2013 and now they are puttingin the hard yards for this year’s eliteevent to be held in Darwin.

Great to see the juniors getting onwith business at training including train-ing independently last Sunday afternoon.

Australian OpenSunday February 16 will see a con-

tingent from the Northern Territory ar-rive at Darebin International SportsCentre.

This event is Bowls Australia’s ‘Ulti-mate Battleground’ and we wish Kather-ine bowlers Bron, Sandy, Snake and Malall the very best on their assault at theAustralian Open.

If you happen to be in Melbourne, please feel free to call in and show yoursupport.

The Katherine bowlers will be easyenough to spot; they will be the onesfreezing even with jumpers and beanieson.
