Hello to everyone who reads ournewsletter from the NKBMA. Wehave a new Editor in Chief and likeany good Editor in Chief, JerrySchrepfer has asked for a statementfrom the desk of the new President ofour association.
This is not new for me, because whenthe NKBMA was formed by GeneThompson and Ron Cornett, I wasasked to be the first President. The factis we were all gathering at a Buickdealership near Florence and eatingchicken with a lot of great foodbrought by the attendees…..in themiddle of the repair bay. Bluegrass canhappen anywhere that friends show upwith a few instruments. I learned howto play Bluegrass there from some ofthe most congenial people I’ve evermet. Thanks to Barry, Tom, Earl,Gene, Roy, Kenny, Bud and I couldgo on for a long time with this tribute.
Those were wonderful times and Imiss the closeness we shared backthen. Truth is, we still have many ofthe same faces that come to our jamsessions at Willis Music on the 4th
Friday of each month, but let’s face
it, some of those special faces are now inHeaven and are with us in spirit only. I missthem very much, but at the same time I amgratified to see many new faces and verygrateful that Willis Music allows us to meetin such a wonderful facility as their store inFlorence.
Would I be too forward to ask if youwonderful folks who still appreciate the livemusic and friendship would ask some of yourneighbors to come and join us? Bluegrassand in general the Music of the Mountains isstill fun for all. It is a world widephenomenon, this music, and we can keepthe candles burning for it as long as we honorthe origins and embrace the changes to it asthey come. Faces change and so does themusic, but the love of it’s roots binds ustogether in a way like nothing else can.
Everyone, have a good and prosperous NewYear and keep the sounds of the Music of theMountains in your hearts by joining us asoften as you can.
See You at Willis!

JANUARY FEATURED BAND
January 17th The Missy Werner Band performed atthe Willis/WoodSongs CoffeeHouse/NKBMA Concertof the month. And what a performance it was!
Those in attendance were treated to one of the areasmost popular bluegrass bands. From the first few bars
of the opening number it was apparent this is a group of veteran performers who know howto interpret Bluegrass music as well as any band performing today.
Suzanna Barnes is the newest member of the group bringing that bluegrass fiddle sound to thestage. Jeff Roberts delighted all with his impeccable, authentic banjo style, his baritone voiceand his knack for entertaining. Tim Strong amazed the audience withhis skills seemingly using every string and note on the fret board as hemade the old Martin guitar ring! Missy on mandolin and husband, Artie,on bass (and MC) round out the group making them most entertaining aswell as exceptional interpreters of bluegrass music.
Add the group’s vocals to the mix, Missy’s strong lead, harmonies fromTim, Artie, and Jeff, and the audience experienced that blend and ‘tight’sound that is so important to good bluegrass performances. And whenArtie, Tim, Jeff, or Suzanna took the lead, the others switched easily toharmony mode demonstrating the depth of this groups vocal skills.
The request for an encore was filled by a version of ‘Summertime’ thatwas one of those ‘priceless’ moments where instrumentals and vocalscame together in an indescribable way leaving the audience breathless. I can’t wait for the DVD!
The Band made this littleguys feet dance for all to see
