Dear Kindred Family,

The angel told Mary, “Do not be afraid, you have found favor with God.” Seriously? Mary was a young, unmarried teenager, pregnant with the Son of God. She was not in for an easy time of it. Mary was engaged to Joseph, but how would she explain this to him? Joseph could legally abandon her. The community might ostracize her—maybe even stone her to death. Pregnant, Mary would take a nearly one-hundred-mile trek to Bethlehem on foot. (The Scriptures mention nothing of a donkey.) How many women would like to try that? Yet, in humility and faith, Mary rested in the assurance of God’s presence. She was at peace. Amy Grant sings “Breath of Heaven” that poignantly captures the deep faith of Mary:

I have traveled many moonless nights

Cold and weary with a babe inside

And I wonder what I've done

Holy Father, You have come

And chosen me now to carry Your Son

I am waiting

in a silent prayer I am frightened

KINDRED CONNECTIONS

Purpose: Be disciples and make disciples who are bold, daring, adventurous followers of Jesus Christ.

Jesus tells Nicodemus, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again…. Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (John 3:3,5-6). As Christians, our baptismal birthday is more important than our birthday! “I am baptized!” Baptism makes all the difference!

Baptism! On November 20, Kindred Lutheran Church welcomed Jake E. Schmidt in Holy

Baptism. Please pray for blessings on Jake, his parents Mike & Diana Schmidt, and his sponsors Matt Raasch and Angie Hamre. In Baptism, you are born again (John 3:3-8)! God promises to:

make you a child of God, for you are baptized in God's name (Matthew 28:19; Galatians 3:26-29),

wash you clean of sin (Acts 22:16),

give you the Holy Spirit, which will enable you to call upon Jesus as Lord (Titus 3:5; Acts 2:38),

make you a member of the body of Christ, the Church (Romans 6:1-10), and grant you eternal life (Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:21-22; Romans 6:3-7).

Baptism marks the beginning of your calling to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Every day when you wash your face or hands or while standing under the shower or taking a bath, remember your baptism and live in the confidence of God's promises!

Vision: Gathered to grow . . . sent to serve!

Applying Biblical Principles of Stewardship How rich are you? Most of us would respond to that question with a recitation of our material possessions. We would list bank accounts and their contents, stocks, bonds, houses, vehicles, and other so-called assets as tangible evidence of our wealth. But is that how rich we are? Not really. Adrian Rogers said this, “If you want to know how rich you are, add up everything you have that money can’t buy and what you’ve sent on to heaven. That’s how rich you really are.” There are two ways to send money on to heaven, or as the Bible phrases it, to “lay up treasures in heaven.” One is to give to the work of the Lord. As we do that, particularly through giving our tithes and offerings here at Kindred Lutheran Church, we make deposits in what one writer described as the “Bank of Heaven.” Another way to accomplish that goal is to give to meet the needs of other people. That’s the admonition provided by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 when he instructed Timothy, “Command those who are rich in this present world . . . to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age. . ” Compared to many people in the world, all of us — to one degree or another — have been richly blessed by God. That’s why we need to apply Paul’s counsel to our lives. As we follow his instruction, giving in the name of the Lord Jesus to meet the needs of others, we “lay up treasure” for the coming age. One of the primary reasons God provides material blessings to us His children is that we might through those material provisions minister in His name to other people. According to Matthew 25:40, when we do that, even to what Jesus described as the “least” of His brothers, it is as though we have done it unto Him.

It's Okay to Be Human . . . We’re brought up to be strong, self-sufficient, independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it’s a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that’s not God’s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” God wants us to care for others—and allow others to care for us in our time of need. If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t suffer alone. Ask for help. We’ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. Men are matched with men, and women with women. (It’s completely confidential too!) Spaghetti Feed Benefit

WHEN: December 11th TIME: 11:30am- 3:30pm WHERE: Horace Senior Center Greg Hanson has been on the Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department for Horace & Hickson for nearly 20 years and is a Lifetime Member. Greg was diagnosed with cancer and has been actively fighting it for a few years. He is now under care of Hospice, along with Roger Maris Cancer Center and Sanford Health. This event will be at free will donation and there will also be a silent auction. Proceeds will go to the care of Greg Hanson and Roger Maris Cancer Center. Please join us in your appreciation for his dedication to our community.

History of a Hymn A Christmas favorite, "What Child Is This?" is a staple of

any worship service or carol singing outing. It was written in 1865 by William Chatterton Dix, a 29

year old manager of the Maritime Insurance Company. Dix was struck with a near fatal illness that year and was confined to his bed for months. Although in a deep depression, during this time he wrote many of his hymns, including "What Child Is This?" It's wonderful to think of how an uplifting and joyful carol could be composed under such difficult circumstances. The tune that is most commonly used with these lyrics is "Greensleeves", a traditional English folk

tune composed in the late 16th century. "Good Christian Friends, Rejoice" is a translation from a much older song. "In dulce jubilo" (literally "In sweet rejoicing") is thought to have been written in the early 14th century by the German mystic Heinrich Seuse. Originally in Medieval German and in Latin, there have been several English translations through the ages. The best known translation is by John Mason Neale from 1853, though there has been some criticism that this version takes too much license with the original lyrics. On older translation by Robert Lucas de Pearsall in 1837 is usually included in the Nine Lessons and Carols program that is quite popular for Christmas Eve services.

Brock Woehl Benefit November 6, 2016 Praise the Lord! Thank God for Kindred Lutheran Church, Kindred High School, Thrivent, Lend A Hand and the entire community for your hard work and generosity! Thank you to the Men who served some 700 delicious ham dinners, to the youth group for the bake sale, the mission committee for the sale of handcrafted gifts from around the world, the leaders of the silent auction, the staff of Kindred High School and to all the volunteers for making the Benefit for Brock a huge success! In less than a month we raised $44,125.90! Brock heads to Mayo Clinic for treatment for the month of December. Please keep him and the family in your prayers.
