Please welcome our new homeowners, the Harris family on Duxbury Pier
Place, the Kanaley family on Ulmer Lane, the Seymour family on Cape
Arago Place, and the Wymer family on Gull Rock Place. We know they will
all love living here!
I Need your Help!
Ingredients:
1 German chocolate cake mix
1 small box instant vanilla pud-
ding
2 cups nonfat sour cream
4 eggs
2/3 cup vegetable oil
3 oz. small milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup Kahlua liqueur
Julie Scott is interested in creating a Little Free
Library for the subdivision on the corner of Heceta
Head and N. Harbor Town Place. The Little Free
Library is a place where neighbors can share fa-
vorite books with each other.

Let’s start a “Little Free Library”
We all LOVE our pets, but please be a respectful neighbor and pick up after your dog. This in-
cludes all public and private areas of the subdivision, including along the Greenbelt. Some pet
owners are allowing their dogs to run free and/or not stopping to pick up waste.
Thanks for helping create good will towards ALL pet owners!

Instructions:
Mix all ingredients, except for the
chocolate chips. Fold in the chips
last.
Pour mixture into a greased and
floured bundt pan. Bake at 350
degrees for about 1 hour.
Serves 12.

The library has free WiFi, 37
computers in the computer lab
(including four laptops that pa-
trons can check out and use any-
where in the library), and eight
iPads and other devices to try
out and play your favorite apps.
Patrons are allowed up to two
hours per day of free computer
time, with a nominal charge for additional time or
a visitor pass. The library also provides a copier/
printer for 10 cents per page. Those less familiar
with computers will find excellent help at all times
through the reference desk plus dedicated comput-
er help on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-4 PM.

walking, snow shoveling, etc. services I would like to include those also.

The library is located at 6015 Glenwood (on
the corner of Glenwood and Marigold across
from Hawks Stadium).
Heceta Head Light is a lighthouse located on the Ore-
gon Coast 13 miles north of Florence, Oregon and 13
miles south of Yachats, Oregon. It is located at Heceta
Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint (a state park)
midway up a 205-foot tall headland. Built in 1894, the
56-foot tall lighthouse shines a beam visible for 21 miles,
making it the strongest light on the Oregon Coast.
Heceta Head is named after the Spanish explorer Bruno
de Heceta, who explored the Pacific Northwest during
the late 18th century.

What’s going on with . . . The new bridge across the Greenbelt?
We don’t have any additional
“official” information, but if you
take a walk east on the Greenbelt
towards Glenwood you will see a
sign about the bridge project. This
sign is posted on a rock beach area
about 1/8 mile from the west end of
the Garden City Nature Trail.
I’ve seen a surveyor and equipment
at this spot a few times, so it ap-
pears that work is slowly continu-
ing. Note that the sign says that
the design is scheduled to be com-
plete by January 2014, but no date
is provided for the construction.
What’s going on with . . . The Greenbelt through Lakeland Village?
Mike Thomas reports on Greenbelt repairs:
“I met with Colin Schmidt this morning, he is the Public Works Director for Garden City, regarding
the Greenbelt repairs. The plan this year is to dig up and remove tree roots in different areas along
the stretch from the river, past my house and past Pond 6. Next year they have added to their budget
to do the same around Pond 5 up to where it connects to the Eagle gravel path. This work is sched-
uled to start August 27th.“
What’s going on with . . . The sidewalk to Walgreens?
Mike Thomas received a note from Ryan Cutler, Project Man-
ager for Capital Projects Department at ACHD. Ryan says
that the negotiations with the Pierce family are ongoing, but
there is no further update.

Mike Thomas reports:
“I met with an Engineer, Contractor and Construction Superintendent this morning at the site of the
planned Grace Assisted Living Project. The plan is to build that west of Foothills Christian Church
and south of State Street. The benefit to us within this project will be the tiling or piping of the now
open irrigation ditch where we get our water from the Boise Valley Ditch Co. If this project takes
place this year, it would eliminate a big maintenance cost to Lakeland Village, as the area around
the ditch is overgrown and would require a lot of work to clean it up next year. “
What’s going on with . . . Grace Assisted Living Project ????

Q & A With Pat Pat Liddell is the Lakeland Village HOA Manager. Pat has been with Advantage Idaho for five
years. She holds the designations of Certified Manager of Community Associations (CMCA) and As-
sociation Management Specialist (AMS) nationally recognized certifications through the Community
Associations Institute.
What do you like most about working with Lakeland Village HOA? The homeowners in Lakeland are
extremely friendly, understanding about the challenges of managing a subdivision with so many
ponds and large common areas, and the Board is very knowledgeable and willing to participate on
committees. I’ve been the manager for Lakeland since January 2009, and I’ve been made to feel that
I’m very much a part of the neighborhood.
What are the most challenging situations you have come across? What to do about the irrigation wa-
ter stained vinyl fence at the lighthouse entrance! I’ve learned more about pond maintenance, chem-
ical treatments, etc., than I ever wished to know! Working with the state about water rights and wa-
ter delivery systems has also been a challenge and provided an opportunity for me to learn more
than I ever imagined. I’ve come to understand that “water is everything” in the Treasure Valley!
What kinds of things would you like the homeowners to come to you with (versus just stewing about
them)? As the HOA manager, I hope that folks feel free to come to me about anything and every-
thing. We’ll work out together whether it’s an HOA responsibility or problem, and if not, hopefully I
can point them in the right direction to get their concern addressed.

In many parts of the country, raking leaves is a necessity during the fall months. Both for those unac-
customed to physical activity and regular exercisers, the dynamics of raking can lead to strain and inju-
ry to the back, shoulders, and wrists, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
(AAOS).
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that over 76,000 people were treated in hospital
emergency rooms, doctors' offices, clinics and other medical settings for injuries related to non-powered
garden tools, including rakes in 2006. Raking requires a number of different activities, including twist-
ing, bending, lifting, and reaching, that utilize several different muscle groups. Improper use of lawn
tools along with the potential for tool-related accidents further compounds the risk of injury to the bones
and muscles.
You can ease the strain and pain of raking -- fall's most taxing task -- by taking the following precau-
tions to minimize your risk of sustaining an injury:
1. Avoid twisting your body while raking. Use your legs to shift your weight rather than twisting
your back. Throwing leaves over the shoulder or to the side while raking involves twisting move-
ments that can overly strain the muscles in the back.
2. Use a properly-sized rake for your height and strength.
3. Wear gloves to help prevent blisters on the hands.
4. Bend at the knees, rather than the waist, to pick up items.
5. Do some form of light exercise for ten minutes to warm up the muscles prior to raking.
6. Try to vary your movements as much as you can to avoid overuse of muscle groups.
7. Wear shoes with skid-resistant soles to minimize the risk of falling. Sturdy shoes can also reduce
the risk of injuries to your feet.
8. Don't overdo. Raking is an aerobic activity - you may need to take frequent breaks or slow your
pace if you are an infrequent exerciser. (It's better to live with the leaves tomorrow than with a sore
back!)
9. As with any form of exercise, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
10. When you're done, gentle muscle stretching can help relieve tension in the muscles. A hot bath
can relax muscles.

lakes in our community. If you are interested in becom-

Neighborhood Picnic Area
The HOA has provided a picnic area tucked
away near the east end of Waterway Court.
This makes a nice place to rest while walking
your dog or to just enjoy the view of the lake
and sound of the waterfall.
