WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?

“Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves.”

(Covey, 2004)

“Leadership is the art of influencing people in such a way as to obtain their willing obedience, confidence, respect and co-operation.”

(Fulton, 1995)

Does appointing you as a tutor make you a leader?

Are leaders born or made?

Who is responsible for “making” leaders?

Theories of leadership

Trait theory Situational theory

Trait theory Individuals are born with certain qualities that

are essential to be good leaders

That leaders are born rather than made and that great leaders are discovered and not developed

Explains why leadership is passed on to the next generation

One is not born a leader but rather training is required to become one

Different situation calls upon different leadership skills

People are trained to be able to adapt learnt skills to various circumstances

Give a practical application of each style during a tutorial.

A leadership approach to tutorials: The 3 P’s

Prepare: Mind-set, motivate, reflect

Perfect: Study process, time management, goal setting

Persist: Stress management, problem-solving, exam anxiety

Think about your module and apply the 3 P’s to your module

Leadership: A short course The six most important words… “I admit I made a mistake”

The five most important words.. “I am proud of you”

The four most important words.. “What is your opinion?”

The three most important words.. “If you please.”

The two most important words.. “Thank you.”

The one most important word… “We.”

And the last, least important, word… “I” (Adair, 2010:p46)
