Leadership & Management
Workshop
Rob Mobile

Aims of this session is:
To identify what ‘Good Leadership’ looks
like
To explore 2 key themes in Leadership
and Management
Offer some insight into how we can
develop our leadership and therefore
become better managers
Personal Development
Management is the efficiency in climbing the
ladder of success; leadership determines
whether the ladder is leaning against the
right wall… Stephen Covey (Seven Habits of Highly
Effective People)
Lets start with a story….
There are natural things that just
happen to us that we can’t change.
Steve Covey calls this the 10/90
principle…
10% of any persons life is made up
of what happens to that person
However the rest, the 90%, is
decided by how that person reacts to
that situation.
This means there are things that
we can change… (the 90%)
Effective managers,
manage themselves
and the people they
work with so that both
the people and the
organisation profit
from their presence
(Blanchard & Johnson)
Q: Identify a leader you admire – what is it
that you admire about them and what
qualities do you relate to most?
Q: What do you want to achieve in your role
and what do you think needs to change?

So what does good leadership look
like?
Communicate well
Form 1:1 relationships
Be a good listener
Surround yourself with likeminded people
Refuse to let others ‘dictate’
Know how to identify strengths and weaknesses
Acknowledge the need to change
Have high levels of optimism
Be patient
Be passionate
How can we use these qualities –
lets look at two themes:
Effective
Management
Handling Change
Effective Management & The One
Minute Manager…
Understanding your Leadership
Qualities
Identifying your preferred leadership
style
And using 3 methods/secrets
The One Minute Manager’s 3
Secrets!
• One Minute Goal Setting
• One Minute Praising
• One Minute Reprimand
One Minute Goals
One Minute Goals
Goals should be printed and kept for
review.
Goals should not exceed one page – no
more then 250 words.
Goals should be clear and concise.
80/20 Rule – 80% of your results will
come from 20% of your goals – so only
focus on that 20%.
One Minute Goals
One Minute Praise
Tell people up front that you are going to tell them how they are doing.
Praise people immediately, after catching them doing something right.
Tell people what they did right - Be specific.
Tell people how good you feel about what they did right.
One Minute Praise
Stop for a moment in silence to let them “feel” how good you feel!
Encourage them to do more of the same
Shake hands or touch people in a way to show your support and what they are doing for the team and organisation.
One Minute Reprimand
A Game of 2 Halves… 1st Half
Tell people beforehand that you are going to let
them know how they are doing in no uncertain
terms.
Reprimand people immediately.
Tell people what they did wrong and be specific.
Tell people how you feel about what they did
wrong-in no uncertain terms.
Stop for a few seconds of uncomfortable silence
let them feel what you feel.
And The 2nd Half…
shake hands, or touch them in a way that
lets them know you are honestly on their
side.
Remind them how much you value them.
Reaffirm that you think well of them but not
of their performance in the situation.
Realise that when the reprimand is
over, IT’S OVER.
