What does independent mean?

If you are independent you are:

not dependent

free

not subject to control by others

not relying on others

self-directing

What does that mean for you?

Being independent means that you don’t have to rely on someone to tell you what to do, you can take responsibility and under take tasks without having to be told what to do.Being independent means that if someone doesn’t do something you aren’t let down by it, you can do it yourself.

How can you become independent?

Learning to be independent can be anything from work experience to reading a book to expand your vocabulary. Everyone should want to be independent as it gives you opportunities that may not have arisen before and rewards due to your maturity. It can also include important life skills such as revision, inquiry, going a little further, going to town alone, taking buses, etc.

Things we do independently:

Cross the road

Choosing our own clothes

Choosing GCSE’s

Doing homework

Tidying your room

Activities, e.g. Dance

Making/ordering own meals

Why should you become independent?

We all have to learn to be independent at some point, whether it’s learning to cross the road in primary school or cooking a meal because your parents are late, and it is an important that we can be confident in our dependence as it means that you can take on more responsibility and have more fun along the way.

But you shouldn’t be too independent, it’s important that you can still be a team worker. Working as part of a team and independently are both very important skills for the future, and are very useful in school and further on in life.

Independence can also mean having your own style, daring to be different. Cutting edge fashions begin when someone decides to try a new item of clothing or combination of fashion items. This could then begin a craze which could change the face of fashion.Art is also about being independent, trying new colour schemes and developing your own unique style that shows your talent. It’s also important to lead others independently within drama so others may follow your ideas and contribute their own unique concepts within the piece.

Quotes

Henry & Stephen

Thomas Jefferson

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character.

Abraham Lincoln

You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man's initiative and independence.

Walt Disney

Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He was a means to an end.

Will Rogers

There is no more independence in politics than there is in jail.

Franklin D. Roosevelt

True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.

Voltaire

Injustice in the end produces independence.

Henry Ford

If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.

Walt Whitman

The beauty of independence, departure, actions that rely on themselves.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will, which I now exert to leave you."

Paul E. Gray

The most important outcome of education is to help students become independent of formal education.
