PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: First Baptist Church celebrates 100 years
The First Baptist Church (originally called Vero Baptist) began with 15 charter members. In 1915, they alternated Sundays with the Methodists in a local school building near the railroad tracks. Over the last 100 years, the original church buildings were demolished, replaced, and added on to accommodate the growing needs of the congregation. It is now at 2206 16th Ave. The Indian River Farms Company donated two lots to the church. The first church was built at a cost of approximately $3,000 and it accommodated 300 people. According to the August 1916 Fort Pierce News, “The building is a fine little house and nicely finished. The pews are stained and all chairs are stained and upholstered. Rev. J. C. DuBose made the plans and everything was finished according to his plans.” Rev. Dubose was the founding minister as well as a Doctor of Optometry and a jeweler. He was a circuit-riding
minister for most of the Baptist churches within present day Indian River County. He performed marriages and burials throughout the county and Fort Pierce. Until his death in 1953, he served as minister from 1915-1920 and then as interim pastor in succeeding years. In September 1917, the new congregation was anxious to be host for the annual Indian River Baptist
Association meeting. In order to impress their guests, the church members built a pergola for an outdoor picnic. Rev. Eli P. Ellington and his wife Mary built a house on 17th Avenue in 1921. Both passed away in 1936 and part of their estate was left to the church which helped pay for the first pipe organ. For the 25th anniversary, the church observed “All-States” night where they invited all winter visitors to represent their states.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

• When I heard the news, there was a profound sense of sorrow. Not unlike when you’re told a friend has died. When I interviewed Sam and Jennifer Boksmati in late February, it was for the column I was going to write when their new business opened. At the time, they anticipated the still-under-construction Jennifer’s Bakery – located on westbound State Road 60 just east of the railroad tracks – would be open by mid-March. It has yet to open. And it’s not going to open. Sam and Jennifer are getting a divorce. Those who frequented their previous bakery – Fillin’ n’ Chillin’ (which was located at Oslo Road and 20th Avenue) – probably had the same reaction as I did when they heard the news. That is, absolute shock. “We’re going to have to sell it now, unfortunately,”
Jennifer said. Hundreds of thousands of dollars was put into this construction project. Everything was brand-spankin’-new. Jennifer said she requested the divorce, but Sam was the one who filed. “I put on a happy face for a long time,” she said. “It was time for me to make some major changes in my life.” For the time being, Jennifer’s Bakery is operating out of a place you might not expect. “I’m sharing a kitchen with one of my competitors,” she said. Sam, who spent countless hours on construction of the new bakery, says he has lost 22 pounds since Jennifer told him she wanted a divorce. To say he’s devastated would be an understatement. Sam, a gregarious type who loves to make people smile, is not sure what he’s going to do.

Both gave me permission to give out their phone numbers for those interested in contacting them. Sam’s number: 713-4141. Jennifer’s number: 713-4494. Both are such good people. It’s a shame the building they put their heart and soul into constructing will not be opening. Life happens, though.• I know there are a lot of financial institutions in Vero Beach, but Cherise Westenberger, the branch manager of the Florida Community Bank, put it in perspective. She said there are at least 17 banks and/or credit unions within a 4-mile radius. I jotted them down while she reeled off the names. Seventeen!• Measles was a big deal when I was a kid. Then, it’s like it vanished. Now, out of nowhere, it’s back. Very strange.• Thanks to Sheila Bemis for letting me know about the Vero Beach mention in the Kit ‘N’ Carlyle cartoon published April 18 in the Press Journal. (Vero Beach resident
Sharon Ballou and one of her six cats, Pepe Le Pew, received their 15 seconds of fame in Larry Wright’s cartoon.)• Patricia Blais bristled at the prices of haircuts being advertised on a sign along U.S. 1 in Sebastian – $9 for men; $12 for women. “What if a man’s hair happens to be longer than a woman’s? Does he still pay $9. And if the woman’s hair is shorter than a man’s, does she still pay $12?” Although that type of pricing structure is somewhat common, it doesn’t sit well with her.• What’s the deal with “Lester Nathan Highway”? As attorney Leo Desmond pointed out, do a Google search to certain businesses on State Highway A1A and the address will be listed as “Lester Nathan Highway”instead of A1A. It’s kind of like how the weather app on your iPhone refers to the area around Oslo Road as “Nevins.” Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of someone refer to A1A as “Lester Nathan Highway.”

Overlooked cinematic gems
As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:
• No Such Thing (2001, R, directed by Hal Hartley). Beatrice (Sarah Polley) is sent to Iceland to learn what happened to her fiancé (who was there researching a mythical creature). Once in Iceland she meets the creature, who turns out to be an immortal troll monster that wants nothing more than to finally die. When Beatrice discovers it was the monster that killed her fiancé, she decides to help him. They travel to New York to find the doctor w ho reportedly has a formula that can kill monsters, but things take a turn for the bizarre when the monster becomes an instant celebrity. • The Proposition (2005, R, directed by John Hillcoat). Guy Pearce stars in this gritty western set in rural Australia at the turn of the 19th century. Charlie Burns (Pearce) has been
given a proposition, but can he hope to fill his side of the bargain? An outstanding cast (including the great John Hurt), great storytelling, and beautiful cinematography make this movie a true gem. • Jamie Marks Is Dead (2014, NR, directed by Carter Smith). The body of high school pariah, Jamie Marks, is found in the woods by classmate Gracie Highsmith. Later, Jamie’s ghost appears to Gracie – watching her from afar. Jamie’s ghost also
appears to Adam McCormick, a fellow classmate who has a heavy crush on Gracie. Gracie warns Adam to stay away from the ghost, but Adam feels bad about the way Jamie was treated in life and wants to help him cross over. This leads Adam on a journey into Jamie’s dark and frightening world of the earthbound dead.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

Had another band (Bon Jovi?) recorded this song, it probably would have cracked the Top 400.415. “Why”(1992) Annie LennoxMemory: What a voice. She sings with such emotion. 414. “Whoomp! (There It is)”(1993) Tag TeamMemory: If you’re in a group setting (and alcohol is involved), how can this song not put a smile on your face?
