A word from our Pastoral Worker, Debbie:
Last week we began to explore the physical words to say when coming to Father to request the Sacra-
ment of Reconciliation. Our encounter with God through this beautiful means to healing and hope be-
gins with the Sign of the Cross, the words “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It is 2 weeks, (or 6
months, or many years) since my last confession, and these are my sins.” A discussion continues, as
Father and I discuss what is worrying me, or challenging me, or defeating me. I am given a chance to say
sorry to God for the things I do that I do not seem to manage well, and for the choices I have made that
may have been damaging to myself, or to others I affect through my behaviour. I have an opportunity to
physically say the words “I am sorry”, perhaps with the traditional words “for these and all my sins I am
sorry”. At the conclusion of the discussion, Father asks me to complete a penance. This is a task that
encourages me to do something physical, an action that makes reparation for my poor choices. I use the
analogy with young children of someone who steals the Twisties from someone else’s lunchbox on a trip
to their bag in an empty hallway. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but…! They could simply feel
sorry for their actions, but completing the process of reconciliation should include doing something nice
for the child that missed out on their treat, or by replacing the item if possible. Father would never ask
anyone to make reparation in a way that would identify a sin! This is a really important part of maintain-
ing the Seal of the Confessional, so much a part of current public discussion. In my fictitious example,
the child may complete an unrelated act of kindness for the person they had wronged, or the Twisties or
another treat that the penitent child had been given could simply appear in the victim’s bag in an un-
guarded moment. Going back to my penance, Father may simply ask for prayers for the person against
whom I may have offended. (I don’t know, I am guessing, as I would never ask anyone else what hap-
pened in their visit to Father!) More to the point, each situation and each conversation is totally unique
and totally private. The Seal of the Confessional is a grave responsibility that comes with the honour of
Priesthood. Father then asks me to make an Act of Contrition. This is a ‘sorry prayer’, and can come
straight from the heart. The ‘right’ words don’t actually matter. Father will always help, but I can say the
one most of us learned as kids “Oh my God, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, for you are so
good, and with your help I will try not to sin again”. Father then says the Prayer of Absolution “…
through the ministry of the Church I grant you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins, in the
name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. I join with him in making the Sign of the
Cross again. Hearing this Prayer of Absolution is one of the prime reasons against the argument that I
don’t need to come to Confession to say sorry to God, I can just simply tell him I am sorry for my sins in
the privacy of my own heart, and skip the whole discomfort of Confession. We should each do that any-
way, each and every day. But through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I physically say the words ‘I am
sorry’, and I hear the words that say “I forgive you”. I am then free, in so many different ways, to ‘go in
peace’, with the assistance of the power of the healing love of God accompanying me, as I head back,
refreshed, to all of the struggles that daily life brings. Just as those whom Jesus healed were changed, I
cannot help but be changed by my encounter with him through the powerful Sacrament that he placed
in the hands of his closest friends as his first public action following his resurrection. What a gift. Do I
really want to leave it unwrapped, at the bottom of my wardrobe amongst last year’s thongs and the
shoes I wore to that wedding 20 years ago? Seems like a pity!
Lenten Program: Everyone is welcome - it is always friendly, thought-provoking, and a little oasis of prayer. Please join us.
