*Affirmation of Faith from A Brief Statement of Faith

We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced and to work with others for justice, freedom and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives.

*All who are able may stand.

2018 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

IN REVIEWWHEN YOU PASS THROUGH THE WATERS,

I WILL BE WITH YOU. - ISAIAH 43:2

Each time a child is baptized at White Memorial, our congregation stands and promises to guide and nurture the child by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging them to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of his church. Vacation Bible School is one of the most tangible, fun and meaningful ways that so many members of our church family live into that promise.

During the week of June 18 - 22, 230 children, 60 youth helpers and 135 adult volunteers came together for an awesome week at “Rolling River Rampage,” where we experienced the ride of a lifetime with God! We were reminded to find adventure, acceptance, joy, rest and peace on the river. We

talked about how we can have extraordinary adventures in our everyday lives.

Mornings included assemblies where Rebekah Rivers, Ruth Rapids, and Romper (the cutest river otter around) introduced the day’s theme. Many thanks to pastors Tracey, Grier and Chip for sharing time with us. The fourth and fifth graders did an amazing job acting out several of our daily Bible stories - what talented youth we have at our church. It is a moving experience to see God’s love working through our children!

All around our church campus, children took part in intentional activities - including art, music, movement, science, musical movement, yoga and drama - that illustrated the important themes of our week. The fourth and fifth graders traveled to Morningside to sing hymns and spend time in fellowship with the elderly residents, lovingly giving of their time and gifts.

For our service project, we partnered with church members who will be leading VBS at the Repatriote School in Haiti. We collected money to pay for VBS t-shirts (just like ours!) and to cover the costs of friendship bracelets that our children made during the week. These items will be delivered by both youth and adults traveling to Haiti in July. We cannot wait to see our

friends in Haiti enjoying their VBS week!

It was a joyful and adventurous week at our church, and we give thanks for each of the children that participated, the youth helpers that so enthusiastically gave of their time and energy, and all of the adult volunteers who poured out their love into these children and youth helpers, guiding and nurturing them. We are blessed!

Music 101Music 101 sessions will offer a chance for you to understand how to sing in order to participate more fully in congregational songs. We will sing together, have some demonstrations and take questions. We will explore how singing is different from speaking but also how it relates to speaking.

We will explain some of the basic symbols and language of music so that you can better read a hymn page or a simple piece of choir music. We will define the basics of melody, harmony and rhythm.

TWO SESSIONS WILL BE HELD TODAY AND SUNDAY, JULY 15 FOLLOWING 10 A.M. WORSHIP IN S300/CHOIR ROOMEach session will be about 30 minutes, roughly 11:10-11:40. The second session will not be a duplicate of the first,

but a continuation. Both sessions will be video recorded and later available at https://vimeo.com/whitememorialnc.

AND LET ME ADD, THIS WILL BE FUN! - KARL

CONGREGATIONAL QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS:“I can’t sing” or “I don’t know how to sing”

“I don’t know how to read music.”“I can sing what I know, but I can’t learn new songs.”

MUSIC DIRECTOR’S RESPONSES:“Let me demonstrate some simple concepts.”

“Let’s break it down into some separate components.”“Once you know a few basics, you can see how a new song uses

the same language as songs you already know.”

PRAYING DURING TIMES OF NEEDWhat does it mean to “pray without ceasing,” as Paul encourages the Thessalonian church? In prayer we present our true selves before God, and we also pay attention for God’s voice and presence in our lives. We pray through words and silence, activism and service, music and art. Prayer is not one-sided, but rather an openness to two-way communication with God.

Whether it is praying for the needs of your family, your friends, our world or yourself, WMPC offers several ways for you to engage in daily prayer. We hope you will join us.
