CHAPTER NO 1
INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS LIFE SATISFACTION
It represents how satisfied people feel with their life generally, as contrasted with
positive affect (sometimes called just 'happiness'), which represents how they feel at
a single point in time. That is, life satisfaction involves people thinking about their
life as a whole, including factors such as whether they are achieving their goals, are
doing as well as other people around them, and are happy generally rather than just
right now. Life satisfaction is thus a longer-term measure than affect.
The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a measure of life satisfaction developed
by Ed Diener and colleagues (Diener, Emmons). Life satisfaction is one factor in themore general construct of subjective well being. Theory and research from fields
outside of rehabilitation have suggested that subjective well being has at least three
components, positive affective appraisal, negative affective appraisal, and life
satisfaction. Life satisfaction is distinguished from affective appraisal in that it is
more cognitively than emotionally driven. Life satisfaction can be assessed specific
to a particular domain of life (e.g., work, family) or globally. The SWLS is a global
measure of life satisfaction.
WHAT IS LIKERT SCALE?
A Likert scale or more accurately a Likert -type scale, is a psychometric scale
commonly used in questionnaires, and is the most widely used scale in survey
research, such that the term is often used interchangeably with rating scale eventhough the two are not synonymous. When responding to a Likert questionnaire
item, respondents specify their level of agreement or disagreement on a symmetricagree-disagree scale for a series of statements. Thus the scale captures the intensity
of their feelings. An important distinction must be made between a Likert scale and a Likert item.
The Likert scale is the sum of responses on several Likert items. Because Likertitems are often accompanied by a visual analog scale (e.g., a horizontal line, onwhich a subject indicates his or her response by circling or checking tick -marks), the
items are sometimes called scales themselves. This is the source of much confusi on;it is better, therefore, to reserve the term Likert scale to apply to the summated scale,
and Likert item to refer to an individual item.
