l'impératif

The imperative, called l'impératif in French, is a verb mood which is used to  give an order

express a desire

make a request

offer advice

recommend something

the subject pronoun is not used with the imperative

Imperative is expressed only in tu, nous and vous forms

In the negative form ‘ne’ is placed before the verb and ‘pas’ after the verb.

Conjugation• Parler finir• Parle! Finis!• Parlons! Finissons!• Parlez! Finissez!• Regular ‘er’verbes---the ‘s’ from the tu form of the

verb is dropped.

Examples

Ferme la porte!Close the door!Fermons la porte!Let us close the door!Fermez la porte!    Close the door!

Mange maintenant!Eat now!

Mangez maintenant!Eat now!

Mangeons maintenant!   Let us eat now!

 

Negative imperative sentences Ne parle pas ! Do not speak!

  N'oublions pas les livres.  Let's not forget the books.

  N'ayez jamais peur.  Never be afraid.
