LOOKING FOR MORE INFO?
2
Have you ever wondered how our food is produced
or what it is like to work on a farm? Want to spend some
time getting back in touch with our food,
nature and its wonders?
The Shuswap is home to orchards, ranches, dairies,
gardens, wineries, breweries, and apiaries. Many of our
food producers welcome you to visit and learn about
what they do. A tour – or a self guided tour – is a unique
opportunity to see firsthand how food is produced, right
from the very beginning. It’s perfect for families and
folks simply seeking to share moments of discovery.
Whether you live in a big city or a small town, whether you
work in an office or in the great outdoors; if you eat, you
are connected to agriculture. Here in the Shuswap you
can witness that connection firsthand. Our agricultural
community is strong, and we’re proud to be able to grow
some of the best produce, meat and dairy you’ll ever find.
A TASTE OF HOME While you’re with us, be sure to try out our local fare –
at the farms themselves, at farmers’ markets, and at
shops and restaurants that offer food from this area.
Your tastebuds will thank you!
FROM OUR LAND TO YOUR TABLE
Roll up your sleeves and grow perennial memories right here!
Our connection to our food.
WHY VISIT A FARM?
Or an orchard, a dairy, a winery or an apiary for that matter?
3
Get ready for a fun, energizing, relaxing day! Breathe deeply,
look and listen closely and if the opportunity arises get your
hands dirty! If you have a chance to taste the farm’s produce,
savour it! Here are some hints on making the most of a tour.
Be casual: Wear comfortable footwear and clothes
that can stand up to a bit of dirt. You may find yourself
walking on dirt roads and uneven terrain. And of course
remember to wear a hat and sunscreen on our hot,
sunny summer days.
Be curious: There’s lots to learn and a tour is the
perfect chance to have your questions answered.
So don’t be shy – ask away!
Be safe: Seeing live animals and impressive farm
machinery up close can be thrilling, but always be very
careful. If you have a guide listen for all directions and
instructions.
Be informed: Call ahead to confirm tour availability and to
get additional information on what to wear, bring and expect.
A TOUR 411What you need to know before you go.
If agriculture excites you, this is the perfect region to
explore. Make a point of visiting several types of food
producers – orchards, ranches, dairies etc – and see
just how different they are. Pair farm tours with visits to
wineries and breweries to delight all parts of your palate.
For those who enjoy the journey as much as the
destination, consider planning a cycling tour, savouring
the scenery and stopping in at farms along the way.
Or explore completely different lifestyles by combining
farm visits with houseboating or camping and hiking.
If shopping and dining are more your style, give your
visit an agricultural theme by touring the region’s farmers’
markets and stopping in at the many markets and
gift shops located right at the farms themselves.
Or look for restaurants that feature local food, you’ll need
to visit them a few times to give yourself a chance to try
all the local dishes on offer!
YOUR NEXT GREAT AGRICULTURAL ADVENTURE!
So many ways to explore and enjoy.
The possibilities for memorable visits are endless!
