SIMPLE MACHINES

Simple machines have few or no moving parts. Some examples are:

pulley, inclined plane, screw, wheel, wedge and lever.

It is a rigid bar with a support called fulcrum.

Lever

It moves objects up or down.

Inclined plane

It uses a wheel and a rope to lift or lower an object.

Pulley

We use a wedge to cut objects

Wedge

It holds things together or lifts

objects.

Screw

It turns around an axle. We use it to lift or move an

object.

Wheel

Complex machines are made up of a number of simples machines working together. Complex machines use energy to work. This can come from : people, electricity or fuels. We use complex machines everyday. Complex machines are everywhere.

Some examples are: washing machines, cookers and calculators.

Which energy do they use?

They use electrical energy and some use batteries. Some use solar energy.

Some examples are: cars, buses, lorries, bikes, etc.

Which energy do they use?

They use fuels like petrol or diesel but bikes use kinetic energy.

What do we use them for?

We use robots to make mass-produced products.

What are the advantages of robots?

Robots can be quicker than us and they can do all the dangerous jobs for us.

A bicycle is a complex machine that needs our kinetic energy to work.

We push the pedals with our feet, and when the pedals turn around, the wheels of the bicycle turn around, too.

It is made up of several simple machines:

Levers, wheels, pulley and a chain.

The handlebars are levers

The brakes are levers

The gears are pulleys front wheel

The pedals are leversback wheel
