alcohol. In addition, 3M Touch Screen Cleaner 675 has been tested and
approved for this purpose.
· It is important to avoid using any caustic chemicals on the touch screen.
Also, do not use any vinegar-based solutions.
· Apply the cleaner with a soft, lint -free cloth. Avoid using a cloth that
has any grit or other abrasive.
· Always dampen the cloth first and then, clean the screen. Be sure to
spray the cleaning liquid onto the cloth, not the screen, so that the
liquid does not drip nor seep inside the display or stain the bezel.
· Always handle the touch screen with care. Do not pull on or stress
cables.

9. CPU
9.1 Maintenance Procedures
9.1.1 Weekly Maintenance
9.1.1.1 CLEANING THE SYSTEM
Dust and clean the casing, paying particular att ention to any air intake slots
and the power supply fan located at the back of the computer. A soft lint -free
towel will do the job or you can use used dryer sheets, "Swipe It" type dusting
products, or other cleaning wipes.
When you clean your monitor, u se the cleaning fluids only on the monitor case.
DO NOT use them on the glass. Most monitor screens are treated with special
coatings that may be damaged by chemicals. You should only need to use a
damp towel to clean your monitor screen or products specif ically designed for
computer equipment. If you have a LCD panel or notebook computer, use water
or cleaners designed for LCD panels and their coatings. Follow the same policy
when cleaning the glass on your scanner. Cleaning your mouse requires some
attention. If your mouse behaves erratically or skips around, you need to clean
the rollers. Turn your mouse over and remove the retaining ring. Clean the ball
with ammonia and use a Q -tip swab dabbed in ammonia to clean the three
rollers. If the rollers have a film on them, you can use a toothpick to gently scrape
the film off, taking care that the debris does not fall into the mouse casing. Use
as smooth a pad as you can for your mouse. Some mouse pads can collect dirt
that can transfer to the mouse ball.
9.1.1.2 SYSTEM LOCKS UP
A computer "freezing" or running too slow is often the result of running out of RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is where most of the real work on your
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 16
computer is done. It is like scratch paper for a math problem. IF you run out
RAM, y our computer will freeze, die, or create errors. Having to many
programs open at the same time can use up all of the RAM. By closing a few of
the programs you are not using, you may free up enough RAM to continue using
your computer without needing to restart it.
If your computer is frozen, press the keys Ctrl + ALT + Delete simultaneously
(holding down the 1st two, then pressing delete is the easiest way). Only do
this once though because double clicking these buttons will restart the
computer!
A List of programs will show up - these are the programs currently in use.
NOTE: Some of these are needed by the system, so don't close them or you may
have to restart the computer (i.e.: Explorer, Rundll and Systray). Select the
program which is causing problems or any that say "NOT RESPONDING" and press
the END TASK button. After a moment, your computer may start working again.
If not, repeat the process.
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 17
If none of these help, repeat the steps above but this time, click SHUTDOWN to
restart the comput er. Turning off the computer while it is still running should
only be your last resort!
9.1.1.3 DELETING TEMP FILES
Any files that exist within a "Temp" folder are files that will slow down your
computer (The reason for this is that these are files that remain running at all
times). You may safely delete all files that end with ".tmp"
Find temp folders by opening the Find feature:
Start button + Find + Files and Folders…
Type *.tmp in the “Named”: box.
Select C: from the Look in: box.
Click the FIND NOW button.
Highlight all files that end with a ".tmp" by clicking on EDIT - SELECT ALL and
hit your delete key.
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 18
If your files won’t delete, and the message "Cannot delete _______: Access is
denied," pops up, then try deleting files one at a time or in small groups. Some
files may not delete. Don't worry - just skip these.
9.1.1.4 EMPTYING THE RECYCLE BIN
The Recycle Bin is just like the paper recycling boxes at school. Although you
may throw paper in the box, it is not really go ne until the recycle box is
emptied. You can set the Recycle Bin to delete files automatically if you wish.
To empty the recycle bin, double -click on your "Recycle Bin" icon on your
desktop.
Select FILE - EMPTY RECYCLE BIN. (or right -click on it and choos e the same
option.)
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 19
To set it to automatically delete all files, right -click on your "Recycle Bin" icon
and go to PROPERTIES.
Click in the box next to DO NOT PUT FILES IN THE RECYCLE BIN. Then click the
OK button.
To retrieve a file from the rec ycle bin, double-click on your "Recycle Bin" icon.
Click on the file you want back and select FILE - RESTORE.
9.1.1.5 ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
The control panel was made by Microsoft to help you add and remove programs
as well as change other settings in Windows.
"Install/Uninstall" – Use this tab to install new programs and to remove ones
that you do not want to use anymore.
- To install programs, click the Install button and follow the instructions.
- To remove programs, locate the program in the text b ox found in the lower
part of the screen, click on the name of the program, and click the
Add/Remove button.
"Windows Setup" - This tab is used to add and delete system functions.
- Accessibility
- Accessories
- Communications
- Desktop Themes
- Multilanguage Support

9.1.1.6 SCANDISK
Sometimes hard drives get bad sectors - the "potholes" of memory storage!
Running SCANDISK will enable your machine to search each memory section. If
a bad sector is found and i f the data is still retrievable, scandisk will rearrange
the data to avoid that spot. (You can run SCANDISK on any type of storage drive
that is writeable: floppy, zip, or hard drive.)
To run Scandisk on your drive:
Start button + Programs + Accessorie s + System Tools + ScanDisk
Select your C: drive from the list of available drives for the hard drive.
Select a "Thorough" check (notice the description difference between the two
checks).
Check the "Automatically fix errors" box.
Find a nice place to relax for 20-60 minutes! This is going to take a while!
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 21
9.1.1.7 DISK DEFRAGMENTATION
A computer stores files on a hard drive similar to the way Ticket master finds
you a block of seats at a show. If you are the first to buy tickets, you c an get
any amount in any block. But as others begin to place their orders, the seating
area becomes fragmented with empty seats between blocks.
The computer works the same way. It likes to store files in continuous blocks of
memory; however, if it can't, it will store it in chunks. As you add and delete
files from your system, the memory will become fragmented with lots of small
chunks linked together. This slows down your computer when you need to
retrieve and save files.
Defragmenting your computer will allow it to rearrange the files and free up
small sections into blocks of continuous space. It is recommended that you not
defrag your system until its fragmentation is over 10%.
Approximate run time is 1/2 to 1 hour
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 22
Run Disk Defrag mentor: (this is int ended to be run after a successful Scandisk
has been run).
Start button + Programs + Accessories + System Tools + Disk Defrag mentor
Select your C: drive from the list of available drives.
A message may pop up that your hard drive does not need to be d efragmenter.
You can ignore this message if you wish to continue the process.
9.1.1.8 VIRUS CHECK
A virus is a program, which, once activated by your computer, can do serious
damage by deleting all the information on your hard drive as well as o ther
system information and make your hardware useless. These viruses are written
by computer hackers and virus programmers and others who enjoy causing
havoc for others. These viruses can be transferred to your computer by using a
floppy disk that has bee n used in another computer or even through the
Internet. Viruses are often attached secretly to other files and programs,
making them undetectable. Anti-Virus programs locate these viruses and delete
them from your computer.
Norton Anti-Virus contains a list of known viruses and searches your computer for matching viruses and deletes them. Since this list of known viruses continually changes, Norton offers updates to the virus list online through their
Boink Systems Inc Maintenance manual Kiosk SF or SX model Jan 30, 2004 23
web page. You can take advantage of this by using the "Live Update" option and
your TCP/IP Internet account.
9.1.1.9 CLEANING THE CACHE—WEB MAINTENANCE
To load web pages faster, internet browsers temporarily store all the info and
pictures in memory so that the next time you go to that particular URL, it c an
pull the files from itself rather than having to download them again. This is
known as the "cache". After you fill up the cache, it will start deleting files to
make room for the newer ones; however, you may want to empty it yourself if
you notice sluggishness when you are online.
Open your IE browser.
Go to Tools + Internet Options.
Under the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click on the "Delete Files" button.
Do not check the box to "Delete all offline content."
Click the "ok" button.
Under the "History" section, click on the "Clear History" button.
