You mentioned the challenges of farming in this region, what are they?

Ourmainchallengesarewatermanagementanddrainagealongwithsoilhealth.Thisregionisquiteflatandlowlyingandcombinedwiththeareasheavyrainfallmeansthelandrequiresagood,wellmaintaineddrainagesystemtocontrolwaterlevels.Also,soilqualityispoorbecausemuchofthelandwasnotinaproductivestate,orwaspoorlymaintainedwhenitwaspurchased,weareworkinghardtoimprovesoilhealth.Thesehavebeenourbiggestchallengestodate.

Background

5McDonald’s Europe Flagship Farms Friedrich Hasse, Latvia 23/11/2014 www.flagshipfarms.eu

How do you maintain the drainage systems on the farm?

Wehaveintroducedmanagementpractices to maintain the polder dams and drainagenetworks, whichhelpimprovefieldconditionsandavoidthefieldsandsoilbecomingsaturatedandwaterlogged. We are careful to ensure that this managementdoesnotimpactthewaterecosystemsintheareaandwetakecaretomonitorwaterlevelsonthelandanddirectourmanagementpracticesaccordingly.Itisveryimportanttoregularlyclean out and clear the ditches and waterwaystoensuretheyareoperatingeffectively;periodicallywehavetorenewsomeoftheoldSoviet–eradrainagesystems. We’ve

Thelargerpiecesofclearedbrushandwoodfromtheditchesandwaterways, alongwithotherwoodclearedfromaroundthefarmarecollected and dried on farm. Therefore, throughthemanagementoftheditchesandwaterwaysweareabletomaintainthefarm’sdrainagesystemwhilstutilisingthewastewoodtoprovideuswitharenewableandsustainableenergysource.

What technologies have you introduced to address some of the soil fertility issues?

Wefirststartedsoilsamplingandtestingthenutrientcontentofoursoilsin2005,weemployedanumberoflocalagronomiststotakethesamplesandrecordedtheresultsmanually.Inspring2012weintroduceddigitalsoilnutrientmapping.ThisbegantobuildupaGPSmapofthefarmusingsoilnutrientsamplestakeneverythreehectares.Fromthiswe’veseenthatsoilnutrientlevelsvaryconsiderablyacrossmostofthefields.Evenwithinonefieldthevariationcanbesizeable.We’renowusingthisdatatotargetandadjustfertilisertreatmentsacrossthefields.TheinformationisremotelyenteredintoaGPSguidancesystemonthefertilizerspreadersothattheapplicationrateisautomaticallyadjustedinresponsetothedatafromthedigitalsoilmaps.

What benefits has the targeted application of nutrients delivered to the business?

We’renowapplyingnutrientsinresponsetothecropsneeds,whichhelpstooptimisecropgrowth.UsingthesoilnutrientmapsandGPStechnologyhassavedusaround10–15%onfertilizercostsandwearealsousinglessfuel.It’salsohelpedincreasetheefficiencyofthespreaderandreducedtheworkloadforus,helpingtofreeuptimeforothertasks.Withlargescalefarmingoperationslikeours,precisionagricultureisakeyinvestmentarea.
