Welcome to the historic Mid Worcestershire Ring In 2011, the Droitwich Canals reopened after more than 70 years since being officially abandoned. The Droitwich Canals were an important part of Worcestershire’s industrial history linking the salt mining industry to the River Severn and the Birmingham-Worcester Canal which together, make up the Mid Worcestershire Ring.
The ring allows boats, cyclists and walkers to make a 21-mile circular journey through some of the Britain’s most beautiful and historic countryside. As part of the canal restoration project, a linear park has been created providing picnic sites, fishing pegs, and new stop off points for boaters, walkers and cyclists. Miles of towpath have also been upgraded, with new and improved access points and 26 new visitor moorings. The area is also rich in wildlife so everyone can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature up close.
In this leaflet you will find so many ideas for a short break to Worcestershire including great days out at a variety of attractions, fantastic walking and cycling routes as well as the opportunity to tour the only short break ring in the country by boat.

Worcester & Birmingham Canal
The town of Droitwich Spa was built over brine from which salt has been extracted since prehistoric times. The Romans canalised the River Salwarpe to transport the salt by boat, but the river was inclined to flood in the winter and have low water levels in the summer. In 1762 the great canal builder James Brindley met with the salt producers to plan a canal from Droitwich to the River Severn running roughly parallel to the River Salwarpe, entering the River Severn at Hawford. The enabling Act was passed in 1768 and the canal was completed in 1771.
Early in the 19th century waterway developments switched to the other side of the town with the opening of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal in 1815. To capture the potentially lucrative salt traffic the canal company opened Hanbury Wharf alongside the Salt Way (B4090), salt being transported from the town by handcart. A canal linking the Worcester and Birmingham Canal to the town was opened in 1854. Known as the Droitwich Junction Canal it was constructed to the same narrow dimensions of 7 foot width as the Worcester & Birmingham rather than the 14 foot width of the Barge Canal. It was the last new canal to be opened at the end of the canal era. Consequently some of its features are also of major historical significance
Competition from the railways caused the inevitable decline and the last boat used the Barge Canal in 1918. The Junction Canal lasted only a few more years until the mid 1920’s when the last boat is believed to have travelled along it. An Act of Abandonment was passed for both canals in July1939 and the usual dereliction then followed.
The Droitwich Canals Trust was set up in 1973 with the objective of restoring both canals. Many volunteers and locally based fundraising succeeded in restoring the top pound of the Barge Canal from Vines Park to Ladywood.
From 1998 the restoration work concentrated on the Junction Canal at Hanbury Wharf and the first three locks which lead off the Worcester Birmingham Canal were restored with the aid of a grant from the Inland Waterways Association and completed in 2001.
The formation of the Droitwich Canals Restoration Partnership in the same year led to sufficient funding being secured from Advantage West Midlands, the Heritage Lottery and other funders to make the completion of the restoration, managed by British Waterways, possible.
Droitwich Canals Trust has published a guide for boaters, walkers and all visitors to the Droitwich Canals. Copies can be obtained by writing to Mrs Margaret Rowley, Old Park, Plough Road, Tibberton, Droitwich Spa WR9 7NN enclosing a cheque for £9 (includes postage and packing). Copies can also be purchased from Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre, St Richards House, Victoria Square, Droitwich Spa.

Welcome to Droitwich Spa - the town of Salt. Welcome to Droitwich Spa – the town of Salt. The town has much to offer visitors offering a blend of old and new and is a place of great charm and character. The long association with Salt is evident in many of the buildings. The High Street is of particular interest where many of the buildings lean at interesting angles due to brine extraction.
There is a good range of leisure activities including guided walks, shopping, exploring Vines Park and a Farmers’ Market on the first Saturday of the month in Victoria Square. The Norbury Theatre in Friar Street stages performances and films throughout the year. The town celebrates its heritage with two annual events – St. Richard’s Festival and Salt Day.

LidoA short distance away is Lido Park, which boasts a children’s playground, tennis courts and, in the summer, open air bathing in the Lido Pool. The Lido, which originally opened in the 1930s, uses brine, which is added to the pool water making it the same density as sea water. The facility has undergone extensive refurbishment and offers a heated swimming pool and children’s wet play area, which is open throughout the summer months. For further information visit www.wychavonleisure.co.uk
Located NearbyHanbury Hall (National Trust), a beautiful William and Mary-style house built in 1701 by Thomas Vernon and home to a magnificent recently restored staircase wall paintings by Sir James Thornhill. Surrounding the house are 20 acres of recreated early 18th-century gardens and 393 acres of park. Close by is the Jinney Ring Craft Centre home to a wide range of crafts people working in their own individual businesses as well as a large quirky gift shop, gallery and restaurant. Explore the beautiful waterways & attractions in and around Worcester Worcester has been described as one of England’s finest ‘Shire’ towns, with a vibrant mix of the old and new. The city is built on the banks of the River Severn which links the Birmingham-Worcester Canal in the heart of the city and the Droitwich Canals located north of the city creating the Mid-Worcestershire Ring.
Where-ever you are in the city you are never too far away from feeling like you are in the countryside. The city is lucky enough to have Pitchcroft, home to Worcester Racecourse and Chapter Meadows; both run alongside the River Severn creating a great walking and cycling route which can be enjoyed as one circular route with the addition of the new pedestrian bridge to the south at Diglis.
Worcester is steeped in history and there are many attractions on offer where you can find out about the part the city played in times gone by.
For further information see: www.visitworcestershire.org
Worcester CathedralWorcester Cathedral is one of England’s loveliest cathedrals, with Royal Tombs, Medieval cloisters, an ancient crypt, Chapter House and mag-nificent Victorian stained glass. The Tower is open on Saturdays and school holidays in the Summer, giving fantastic views of the City and beyond. Guided tours can be arranged and there are various exhibi-tions shown throughout the year. Refreshments are available in Priors Parlour Coffee Shop.
SportWorcester city is a great sporting destination home to Worcestershire County Cricket Club set beneath Worcester Cathedral, dubbed one of the prettiest sporting venues in the world. Sixways Stadium, home of Worcester Warriors, is one of the most impressive Guinness Premiership rugby stadiums in the county and Worcester Racecourse, with its picturesque tree-lined track and unique position nestling on the banks of the River Severn, offers a great day out for all the family.
Food & DrinkWorcester is a multi-cultural city which is reflected in the huge variety of cuisine available including traditional and modern English, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, French and Italian. You can choose from a cosy sofa in a cafe, lunch in a pub or dine in one of Worcester’s excellent restaurants.
MuseumsWorcester is home to a variety of museums including The Greyfriars (National Trust), a 15th century Merchants House, Worcester Porcelain Museum which provides an insight into when Worcester was at the heart of porcelain manufacturing and The Commandery, a glorious Grade I listed building dating back to the 12th century. The Command-ery has seen a varied history including the Head Quarters for Charles II in the Battle of Worcester 1651. Worcester City Museum & Art Gallery has a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.
AccommodationWorcester has a variety of hotels, B&B’s and self catering properties suitable for a variety of budgets. You can stay in a Grade II listed hotel on the banks of the river, in a B&B or apartment only a short walk from the town or why not hire a boat to get the most enjoyment out of the Mid Worcestershire Ring.

Worcestershire WaterwaysRiver SevernThis mighty river, is Britain’s greatest natural waterway. Comfortable cruising is available downstream of Stourport-on-Severn, where the waters are busy with motor cruisers and narrowboats. Or further upstream, you can enjoy more active boating by canoeing or rowing on these popular waters.
Stourport-on-Severn & Staffordshire & Worcestershire CanalBuilt around the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal and five basins, Stourport-on-Severn is a charming Georgian town, full of gracious architecture and all the pleasures and facilities of a traditional holiday resort. Pleasure boats offering river trips have been a popular visitor attraction since the late 1700s and competitors come from all over the country to race at Stourport-on-Severn’s annual rowing regatta. Stourport-on-Severn makes an interesting stop, with its Georgian architecture, river front and waterside meadows.
Worcester & Birmingham CanalAlthough the Worcester & Birmingham Canal is one of the most heavily locked in the country, the hard work in navigating it is more than compensated by long stretches of idyllic scenery as the line descends the 30 miles between Birmingham and Worcester. The Tardebigge Flight has 30 locks in just over two miles, making it one of Britain’s steepest. Though largely rural, the line is steeped in history and its five tunnels contribute an aura of mystique.
River AvonThe River Avon meanders through the Heart of England’s tranquil countryside within the Vale of Evesham through the market towns of Evesham and Pershore. The river is a favourite amongst boaters as it is easily navigable with some great scenic spots to stop off and relax. There are also some great walks and many villages to explore with many country pubs serving local food and drink produce from the Vale of Evesham.
River TemeThe River Teme flows into Worcestershire in Tenbury Wells which is located in the north west of the county and flows through the Teme Valley before joining the River Severn just outside Worcester. The River Teme is not navigable by boat but great for walking, fishing and kayaking.
