Mise En Scène within
Sherlock
By Shivam Sharma, Nick
Chamberlain
Branahvan Rajasooriar
Light Within Sherlock In this scene Dr. John Watson meets Sherlock for the
first time
The laboratory is generally quite dim
Except for the spot where Sherlock is working
This may connote that Sherlock is the main character and
must be given the most attention
The lighting in some places is also blue
Gives the feeling that the place is very futuristic.
The colour is very white and blue
Used to suggest cleanliness and that the place is sterile-like
we expect a laboratory to look like
The colour of the walls is also very dim grey. (This is
due to low amount of light)
So therefore when the tools are light up and are stark
white we can easily see them.
Further enforcing the fact that Holmes and Watson are in a
laboratory
Colour Within Sherlock
Sherlock movement centralise around his work station
throughout this clip
Giving the impression that Sherlock is very focused on his
work
He also walks as if he is very detached (and insensitive like
the usual Sherlock.) Again showing that he is focused
The only real movement by him is when he walks to receive
the phone or he is leaving.
Watson stays on the other side of the room.
This may be because Watson doesn’t know Sherlock or
Watson is emphasising that he has a bad leg and needs a
cane.
Figure Movement Within
Sherlock
Mike stays by Watson because he is
introducing him to Sherlock( )
During this clip Sherlock’s face remains typically blank
Focused or deep in thought?
His face remains blank until John says he can use his phone at
which point Sherlock seems slightly surprised
Sherlock is not used to random acts of kindness, therefore
maybe implying that not many people care about him
Watson’s expression is a mix between amazement and
annoyance
He is amazed at the lab
And Sherlock after he deduced that he fought in a war
He is annoyed at being ordered around-showing that Watson
doesn’t trust Sherlock and that he has “Trust Issues”
Expression Within Sherlock
Mike’s expression is rather
amused- this may be because he
enjoying seeing Watson being
baffled or he’s happy because he
found Sherlock a flatmate
( )
Within the clip there was were only very few
props. They were:
The pipette used by Sherlock
John’s mobile phone
John’s walking cane
