Structuralengineeringisasubfieldofengineering.Structuralengineersdesignload-bearingstructures,likebuildings,bridges,tunnels,andstormsurgebarriers,toenduretheenvironmentalconditionsinwhichtheyarebuilt.Forinstance,ahigh-riseofficebuildinginnorthernRussiamusthavearoofthatcanbeartheweightofheavysnow,andastadiuminJapanmustbeabletowithstandearthquakes.Load-bearingstructuresmustwithstandtime,stressandthepressuresofhumanuse;notcollapse,deflectorvibrate,andlastforhundredsofyearswithminimummaintenance.

ProgrammeTheStructuralEngineeringtrackteachesstudentstoformulateandtestphysicalmodelsofstructures,materialsandload.Studentstestcomplexstructuremodelsforenduranceunderstressesthatmightoccur.Forinstance,theimpactofastrongearthquakeonahigh-risebuilding,oraconcretedaminthecreationofanartificiallake.Studentslearntotestandapplyhand-calculationsforquickdecision-makinginmeetingswithowners,architects,contractorsandlocalgovernmentsandaretrainedtousecomputersimulationstodeterminewhetherastructurewillcomplywithdesignspecifications.

TheStructuralEngineeringtrackoffersthefollowingspecialisations:

TheStructuralMechanicsspecialisationtrainsstudentstocalculatestructuresusinglawsIsaacNewtondiscoveredover300yearsago.Inthegraduationproject,studentsdeveloptoolsotherengineersusetodesignstructures.Forexample,acalculationmethodforcomputers,rulesofthumbordesigncharts.Structuralmechanicsspecialistssolvestructuralproblemsforwhichothersdonotknowasolution.

TheMaterialsandEnvironmentspecialisationprovidesstudentswithadeepknowledgeofcivilengineeringmaterialsandtheirbehaviours.Studentsusesophisticatedequipmenttoinvestigatemanymaterialsandprocesses,suchasthehardeningprocessanddurabilityofconventionalandhigh-strengthconcrete;crackpropagationinconcreteandageing;andhealingofbitumen.Innovationsinthefieldarealsoexplored,suchasself-healingconcreteaftercracking.

Thisspecialisationalsoplacesampleattentionontheenvironmentalimpactofacquiringmaterialsandtheconstructionanduseofcivilengineeringstructures.

TheConcreteStructuresspecialisationteachesstudentstomaketherightdecisionsforoptimaldesignofconcretestructures.Reinforcedconcreteisthemostwidelyusedconstructionmaterialbecauseofitsdesignpossibilities,lowcost,strengthanddurability.Designingareinforcedconcretestructureisaspecialisationinitself.Manyinnovationshaveoccurredsincethisbuildingmaterialwasfirstintroducedahundredyearsago,suchasself-compactingconcreteandultrahighstrengthconcrete.Thisspecialisationemphasisesconstructionandapplications.

TheSteel,TimberandCompositeStructuresspecialisationfocusesonthedesign,calculationandexecutionofconstructionsmadeofsteel,timber,aluminumandfibre-reinforcedplastic.

Thesematerialsareusedinhigh-riseandlow-risebuildings,factories,towers,masts,locks,weirs,bridgesandviaductsandareencounteredeverywhere.

TheRoadandRailwayEngineeringspecialisationfocusesoninfrastructuralfacilities,suchasroads,airfields,portareas,railwaysandtramways.Thestructuresrequiredforthesefacilitiesarecomplex,consistingofmultiplelayersandcomponentsthatmustwithstandincreasinglyheavytrafficloadsovertime.Studentslearntodesign,constructandmaintainthesestructuresthatareessentialfortheproperfunctioningofmodernsociety.

HydraulicEngineeringStructuresarealwayspartoflargersystems,suchasflooddefencesystemsornavigationsystems.Theyplayanimportantroleinprovidingsafetyandprosperitytovulnerabledeltaregions.IntheHydraulicEngineeringStructuresspecialisation,studentsresearchandstudyvarioustypesofhydraulicstructuresandsystems,suchastunnels,quaywalls,locks,dykesandstormsurgebarriers.

TheStructuralEngineeringtrackprovidesstudentswithanin-depthknowledgeofthefundamentalmaterialsandbehaviourofcivilengineeringstructures,suchasbuildings,roadsandbridges.Useddaily,thesafe,soundanddurabledesign,construction,andmaintenanceofthesestructuresisimperativeforhumanwell-beingandsociety.

Researchisfundamentaltotheeducationalprogramme,andwell-equippedlaboratoriesenableawiderange;fromnano-scalematerialsresearchtotestingfull-scalestructuresandtheircomponents.Sophisticatednumericaltoolsareavailableforstudentstoanalysethebehaviourofmaterialsandstructures.FormostMasterthesisprojects,studentscollaboratewithanexternalparty,suchasaresearchinstitute,consultancyfirm,contractor,ormanufacturerofconcreteorsteelcomponents.

Thespecialisationfocusesontheintegraldesign,constructionandmaintenanceofthesestructuresandcoherentlyaddressestheirhydraulic,geotechnicalandstructuralaspects.

Structuralengineersdesignandbuildeverythingfrombridgesandoilrigstohospitalsandsportsstadiums.Theyalsoimproveexistingbuildingswithadditionalstructuralsafetyfeatures.Structuralengineersworkwitharchitects,consultants,contractors,mechanical,electricalandchemicalengineerstoensurethatallpartsofthestructurearesafeandcapableoffulfillingtheirintendedfunction.Upongraduation,studentsmaychoosetoworkinstructuraldesign(calculatingstrengthanddeformationandsupervisingdrawings),orchoosetospecialiseinbuildingorresearch.Thecareerprospectsforstructuralengineeringgraduatesarepromising,andmanyfindjobswithconsultancyfirms.

MyBachelor’sdegreewasthekeyfactorinmychoiceofMaster’s.AlthoughIdidnotknowinwhichfieldIwantedtoworkinthefuture,Ididknowwhichsubjectsappealedtomethemost.IparticularlyenjoyedthechallengeofConcreteandSteelConstructionsandStructuralMechanics.AfterspendingsometimewonderingaboutHydraulicEngineering,IeventuallydecideduponStructuralEngineering.Thisisconcernedprimarilywithphysicalmodelsofconstructions,materials,andloads.It’saboutmodelling,calculating,anddescribingdifferentconstructions.Youthenhavetochooseaspecialisation-ConcreteStructuresorStructuralMechanics,forexample;therearemanyinterestingoptions.IpersonallychoseSteel,HybridandCompositeStructures,becauseIparticularlylikematerialsciences.Afterall,humandevelopmenthasalwaysbeencloselyassociatedwithknowledgeoftheapplicationofmaterials.ButtheMaster’sdoesnotjustconsistofmaterialsciencesubjectslikeTimberStructures2orFibreReinforcedPolymerStructures.Mathematicsaficionadoswillbeathometoo,withsubjectslikeStructuralDynamicsandSlenderStructures.Amongotherthings,you'lllearnhowafinite-elementprogrammeworks,howtowriteapaperprofessionally,andevenhowtoweld.Inshort,theprogrammepreparesandequipsyoutomakeadifferenceinyourfield!

IfyouholdaDutchBScdegreecloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youwillbeadmitteddirectly.However,ifyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogrammeyouwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalledabridgingprogramme.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
