PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Rapid transformation of Malaysia’s landscape in the 60’s has triggered the
need for a special platform to discuss the extensive agricultural activities as echoed by
26 soil scientists. It was on April 2nd, 1971, at Aurora Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak, the
1st inaugural meeting was held which marked the formation of Malaysian Society of
Soil Science (MSSS). Hence, 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the MSSS
establishment. After 40 years, the impact of MSSS is very obvious. Among the
significant ones are crop suitability based on soil maps generated by soil surveyors,
good agricultural management and practices by agronomists and soil chemists, and
soil conservation and management through expert advice in soil conservation. Since
then MSSS continued to evolve with the inclusion of other branches of soil science
such as soil microbiology, mineralogy, pedology and physics. This further advances
the contribution of MSSS to the agricultural development and the progress of
Malaysia.
During the 2010/2011 session, MSSS was given the opportunity to hold an
international conference in collaboration with World Institute of Phosphate and
Faculty of Agriculture, UPM. The last international conference was organized in
1995. The theme “Balanced Nutrient Management for Tropical Agriculture” attracted
great interest from local and overseas scientists. Two plenary papers, one MSSS
Fellow paper, five keynotes, 24 papers and more than twenty poster presentations
from ten countries have made it one of the most successful MSSS conferences. For
2011, MSSS will organize it annual SOILS conference in Kota Kinabalu. We hope
that SOILS2011 will obtain similar feat under the theme of “Soil Fertility and
Plantation Productivity”.
To increase the acceptance of Malaysian Journal of Soil Science (MJSS), the
chief editor with the approval of the management committee has submitted digital
format to Universe Digital Library. It is anticipated that the move will increase the
citation index of MJSS. All MSSS members should also use MJSS as a platform to
publish their findings. On another front, the impact of the “Best Final Year Project
Award” launched in 2010 to encourage the participation of undergraduate students
from local IPT in MSSS is still low. In view of this, the new MSSS management
committee session 2011/2012 needs to seek additional mechanisms to promote the
society. On the same note, the society is also in the quest to seek the involvement of
new generation of soil scientists to complement the vast experience of senior
members to steer the society to greater height.
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of MSSS, I seek your continuous
support and valuable contribution to this society. With future challenges such as
sustainability of agricultural activities being measured against environmental and
biodiversity issues, MSSS can continue to be relevant through it role in disseminating
scientific information so that equilibrium could be achieved between the need to
produce food, fuel, fibre and maintaining healthy ecosystem services.
……………………………….

The minutes were accepted with minor amendments. The motion was proposed by
Prof. Dr. Sharifuddin Abdul Hamid and seconded by Shaharudin Bakar.

3. Matters Arising
3.1 Malaysian Journal of Soil Science
Special MJSS issue which features a compilation of selected paper from
MSSS-IMPHOS 2010 was suggested. However, Prof. Zaharah informed that
the conference technical committee already has a plan to come out with
special edition of publication such as in a refereed journal.
3.2 MSSS Annual Subscription Fee
Prof Mohd. Khanif would like to know why MSSS members have to pay
RM10 more for the annual subscription fee. Mr. Sim Choon Cheak explained
that the additional RM10 was collected to cover the membership fee for the
International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS).
4. Annual Report 2009/2010
The report was presented to the MSSS members by En. Zulkefli Malik (Hon.
Secretary). The report was passed with notation. The motion was proposed by Prof.

It was commonly agreed by all members to retain Prof. Dr. Zaharah Abdul Rahman
and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Mohamed Noordin Wan Daudas the Auditors.
8. Other Matters
Three resolutions were discuss during the 39th AGM
Resolution 1: To waive annual fee for the MSSS members who attend the annual Soil
Science Conference and AGM
Resolution 2: To make Department of land Resource, Faculty of Agriculture, UPM to
be a custodian of MSSS permanent address
Resolution 3: To seek suitable investment scheme to generate additional income from
MSSS existing fund
Suggestion from MSSS members:
• “Annual fee” to be replaced by “annual subscription fee” in the Resolution 1
• Change the official address in the constitution to the custodian address
(Department of land Resource, Faculty of Agriculture, UPM)
• Amendment of the MSSS constitution should be carried out in order to pass
Resolution 1 and Resolution 2
• Because of high risk factor in the investment scheme, majority of the MSSS
member feel that Resolution 3 should be dropped
• The next MSSS committee 2010/2011 should work on the amendment of the
MSSS constitution and the special EGM was suggested.
(After the suggestion resolutions 1 and 2 were voted for during the meeting by
members. While the Resolution 3 was not voted in view of the uncertainty of the
investment scheme. Therefore, the member proposed that the resolution be discussed
further by the management committee and refer to the MSSS constitution).
