This term in practical art, students have been exploring plaster mask making. In order to make their
masks students have undertaken several steps. Firstly students have researched a world culture.
They have learned about the use of masks within this culture, and have designed their art based on
a specific mask. Next they have created a template of their mask out of clay. After this, students
have applied many layers of plaster weave to form a solid structure which they will paint. Although
their masks are based on a specific mask from their chosen culture, students then are adding their
own personality to them through colour and embellishments. Despite some frustrations, students
are in the midst of creating some wonderful assessment pieces, which will hopefully end up on
display at the local library.

Throughout the month of March we have been heavily focusing on the impact of
pollution in the environment. At Preschool we have embraced the approach of
reducing, recycling and reusing. The children are very committed to finding the
triangular recycle symbol on packaging and ensuring that those items are placed
in the yellow bin!
Our focus letter E saw us exploring the concept of environmental damage, extinct
and endangered animals, deforestation and the rate of destruction caused by
man.
In Preschool we took it upon ourselves to promote and engage in sustainable
practices. This saw us go on a tour of the Central School to clean up the gardens
and playground. We collected 3 bags of rubbish in under 30 minutes. The
Preschool children are really hoping that the rest of the school and community can
get on board with looking after our environment as passionately as we do in
Preschool!
Today in Preschool
we celebrated the
joint birthday of
Logan (5) and Miss
Tara (18)!!

Welcome back everyone to Week 11 of Term 1. We have finally reached the last week of term after a
very busy and active time. The positive thing is that we are all used to this cycle. So now we just have
to make the most of the break time as we fortify ourselves for the many activities that will be set us next
term. Can I sincerely thank all caregivers and parents for their commitment and support during the
term. The process of getting children to school each day is only as successful as we can make it by
sharing as much of the load as possible.
Today will see the school celebrate our special assembly at 12 noon. This will allow our students to be
acknowledged for all the hard work they have done during this term. Plus this is always the sports
focused term of the year with swimming, netball, tennis, various football codes and other team activities
on offer for our students. That is not to undervalue the Athletics Carnival and other related sports due
to happen next term.
My focus this term has been attendance. One aspect has been the need to bring in notes to explain
absences. We do offer a range of ways to meet this process. A quick phone call, a quick note on the
sheets sent home with the newsletter or a written note signed by parents or carers are all ways to help
us deal with this. Can I once again remind people of the importance of doing this, as we have a
number of programs in place that are based on maintaining attendance at certain levels. This is one
way we can all support each other in the process. Unjustified days will impact on these very quickly.
Can I ask that we begin the next term with a renewed enthusiasm to bring in notes from the very first
day or use the various other processes on offer so that all absences are fully explained.
My biggest pleasure is watching the students arrive each morning dressed in full uniform. This can be
directly attributed to the hard work of parents and carers each day. I am sure that this can be quite a
challenge with all the conflicting pressures each morning. But you are all doing a fantastic job each
day, so thank you for this.
Our HSC and Stage 6 students will now be looking forward to the reports which will be ready early next
term. This will be a time that enables them to assess where they are up to and how to best make use
of their remaining time at school. While this seems so far away in fact it is only just over twenty weeks
of combined school time. This will pass in very quick time. So their challenge is to make the very best
of the opportunities that will be presented to them during this time.
I would just remind people that dogs can present quite a risk on the school grounds. They are drawn
here for a number of reasons, but most importantly they just follow their associated members of the
pack to school. Once here they can cause a WHS issue regarding looking at ways to source food from
bags or even our bins or worse than that they randomly poop on the grounds where students need to
play. This is not a very safe or desirable situation. While these incidents have reduced we are still
encountering the need to chase dogs off the school site which is not an ideal situation for anyone.
This year the school has once again opted to take part in the Tell Them From Me program which allows
students, staff and parents to have a voice at various times during the year via a survey on a number of
issues. This is another important avenue to enable students to have a voice in things that are
happening either at the school or even on a wider scope. The survey will be done in the last week of
school and the data gathered into a report that the school is able to download and use in reports and to
gather feedback.
Congratulations go to Mrs Stacey Makila on her success at gaining the role of Instructional Leader for
the school. She will replace Nicole Humphries for two days a week to move into a whole class support
7
role guiding and assisting teachers as they teach the K/1/2/3 class. This will also mean the school will
be advertising for a classroom teacher for those two days via an EOI process which should appear in
SchoolBiz week one of next term. At present Mrs Chloe Kelso has been doing this role. We anticipate
that this will be resolved early next term.
This term is always incredibly active on other fronts as well. The school is involved in a new planning
and reporting system as are all schools across NSW. This will result in quite a new face for the now
newly named Annual Report which is due for on line publication at the end of the term. This will able to
be found on the school website during the break. It outlines what the school has achieved during 2015
plus has quite a few new areas of information for students, staff and parents. This reviewing process
will also involve our current school plan and a number of other important documents related to these.
There will be more information each week to keep everyone informed. Please let the school know if
you are happy with the information we are providing on Phone: 0267 532 207.
All the best.
Mr Erich Riesinger
Principal
This year, students from our school can participate in the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge.
This is an initiative of the NSW State government. It aims to encourage in students a love of reading
for leisure and pleasure and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but
a challenge to each student - to read, to read more and to read more widely.
Students are required to read texts from the PRC list as well as texts of their own choice. Students
are able to take books home over the holidays.
The 2016 Challenge opens on 7 March and closes on 19 August. Any student wishing to register for
the challenge will need to speak with Mrs Hunt at the library to set up their reading log.
The Sportsmanship Award for Week 11
Secondary Sport is awarded to Cheyanne
Prince and Christian Brannen. Well done!
Next meeting date to be confirmed
in coming weeks.
