Hello, my name is Chris Dierickx, and I am here to propose accessibility improvements to NPR’s project work group for the NPR.org Web site.

From NPR’s Mission and Vision page:“The mission of NPR is … to create a more informed public — one challenged and invigorated by a deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas and cultures. To accomplish our mission, we … distribute programming that meets the highest standards of public service in journalism and cultural expression…”

The goal of this evaluation and presentation is to help make information on NPR.org’s web pages perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust to the widest possible range of its audience: the public. NPR.org programming should be available to all, regardless of ability.

NPR can make improvements to help users who may say the following:“I have a visual disability, and I can’t see a Web page. My screen reader reads a Web page to me. If it’s not discoverable by the screen reader, I miss out.”“I have a hearing disability, and I need captions and text versions.”“I have a motor disability, can’t use a mouse, and I need to control everything via keyboard.”“I have a visual disability, and I need sufficient contrast to read the words on a Web page.”“I have a cognitive disability where I get distracted easily, and I need a clean layout with minimal distractions.”

Many benefits exist for adopting the recommended changes.
