INTRODUCTION

• Network-enabled devices are becoming increasingly ubiquitous

• Embedded development platforms have become extremely affordable

• Devices controlled via internet make it possible to administer a complex housing operation remotely

Arduino - $25 Raspberry Pi ® - $37 Beagle Board - $90

INTRODUCTION

• Wide variety of applications• Reliable Facility Security

• Distributed Preventative Maintenance

• Efficient Utility Monitoring

• Automated Facility Upkeep

We will be focusing on the final example

PROJECT OVERVIEW

• Problem• Multi-family pool systems are maintenance-intensive

• Algal growth and sanitation are primary concerns

• Water must be tested at least daily

• Manual tests require non-recoverable testing supplies

• Impossible to gather high-resolution chemical data with manual tests

• Manual test results are prone to (potentially costly) human error

PROJECT OVERVIEW

• Objective• Design remotely-accessible automated water chemistry testing and

data logging system

• Upgradable to supply chemicals & become a self-maintaining system

• Streamline pool maintenance process

• Save time, increase measurement precision

• Collect data for analysis of chemical levels over given time period

SYSTEM LAYOUT

• Sensor Platforms• Based on popular Raspberry Pi ® Linux computer• Installed in multi-family pool complexes• Connected to nearby Wi-Fi network• Continually test water chemistry

• pH• Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP)• Water temperature

ORP Sensor Probe

pH Sensor Probe

SYSTEM LAYOUT

• Sensor Platforms• Display real-time readings on external LCD display• Log results to USB flash drive for data redundancy• Communicate results to central server via internet• Has connectivity for future chemical dosing pumps

Miniature ORP probe interface

SparkFun 20 x 4 LCD Display

SYSTEM LAYOUT

SYSTEM LAYOUT

• Central Server• Also based on Raspberry Pi ®• Gathers real-time results from distributed sensor platforms• Logs data on local USB flash drive• Displays both real-time and logged data on a web page

• Accessible from PC or mobile device• Arranges data graphically over time

• Remote addition of water, sanitation chemicals can be controlled via same web interface OR by pre-programmed setpoints

RELATED PROJECTS

• Security• Networked video cameras to provide automatic and remotely-accessible

surveillance

• Preventative Maintenance• Wireless, distributed thermostats to aid in vacant apartment freeze

protection

• Efficient Utility Usage• Internet-enabled water chemistry testing and balancing system to

automatically maintain water quality for swimming pools, water features, and potable water supply
