WHAT’S IN A NAME?Naming trendsAfteranalysing325millionbabynames (recordedby theSocialSecurityAdministrationbetween1880and2007), researchershave found that parents arebecoming lessandlessinclinedtochoosethemostpopularnames.Thestudy,whichwaspublishedinSocial Psychological and Personality Science,foundthat:• About40%ofboysweregivenoneofthe10mostcommonnamesinthe1880s.Now,

lessthan10%are.• Forgirls,thepercentagewithatop10namedroppedfrom25%in1945to8%in2007.• About50%ofgirlsreceivedoneofthetop50namesuntilthemid-20thcentury.Now,

justoneinfourhasoneofthesenames.“The biggest decrease in the use of common names started in the 1990s”, said studyresearcherJeanTwenge.“There’sbeenthisculturalshifttowardsstandingoutandbeingunique as opposed to fitting inwith the group and following the rules...
