NOVEMBER, 2019 VOLUME 98 / ISSUE 8, SHEILA COX, EXALTED RULER NAPA CALIFORNIA
MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER Happy Autumn,
The leaves are changing colors and falling from the trees and the grape harvest continues. The weather sometimes does not believe it is fall, with days reaching temperatures in the 80’s! One thing for sure, the clear sunshine days are simply beautiful. Last month’s
activities ended with the Napa Elks Music Festival Gazebo event that featured The Charlie Wade Blues Band and DJ Kenny Green. The music and food were fantastic! The attendance was poor. Those who attended had a good time. One of the highlights of the event was our Esquire, Bob Fraid accompanying the band during a few songs displaying his great drummer skills! Calvin and I were able to meet up with Lodge member and AVP Len Fisher and wife Judy, to attend our CHEA President and Lodge member Tim Jaeger and wife Sandy at his visit to the North District at the Willows Lodge. Other Lodge members who attended were Rich Simmons (CHEA Veteran’s Service Chairman) and wife, Carolyn and Bud Morgan (CHEA Sergeant at Arms) and wife, Linda. We had the opportunity to visit the Chico and Paradise Lodges and do a tour through Paradise. What a testament to the resiliency of that community! They continue to make progress in rebuilding their
community. While there, we attended a great community event that was full of local arts and crafts vendors and had watched local officials handing out awards to various community members and organizations acknowledging the contributions in the rebuilding of their community. The Paradise Elks Lodge was recognized at that event. Unfortunately, the Lodge was affected by the arbitrary power shut-down by PG&E earlier in October. It really had a negative impact on Lodge services, including the loss of revenue. Sadly, all activities and restaurant services were cancelled, which impacted the Oktoberfest buffet and celebration. Fortunately, there was no loss of food due to the great preparation of the staff! Thank you Monica and Stephanie for all your time and energy. A big thank you goes out to PER, Marilyn Bartow for stepping in to do the initiation meeting for me while I was away attending a Nurse Practitioner conference. She initiated six new members. The Flu clinic was a success and 205 community member were administered the flu vaccine. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out at the clinic. Hopefully you were able to attend and enjoy the Halloween Friday Night bar-b-que and the Souper Simple $10 Supper. Finally, the “Great” Northwest District Midterm will take place in Sacramento the first weekend in November. Of course, Calvin and I along with Len and Judy will be attending with a few other Lodge members.
Fraternally,
Sheila Cox, Exalted Ruler

FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY
Hello Members!!
Hope you are all enjoying this beautiful fall weather. The Lodge was among the many businesses and residences that were out of power for a couple of days. Luckily we didn't lose any food, just revenue. We certainly hope it doesn't happen again.
The Lodge is rolling into the holiday season starting with Halloween followed by Thanksgiving and our busiest month of the year, December.
On Wednesday, October 16th we initiated six new members: William H. Beck, Shelley Halladay, Dustin Harnois, Lee Paries, Richard Parker and Sam Slaughter. Please welcome all of them to the Lodge and encourage them to get involved in all of our activities.
Len and I have been traveling a lot with his Vice President duties. It is great to see other Lodges and meet all of the people.
As always, if you have membership concerns please let me know.
Fraternally, Judy Fisher, Lodge Secretary

November 2019 Activities Report
Happy Turkey Day
Gazebo Concert: Our Gazebo, Music Festival was held on 9/28/19. The weather was a little breezy but other than that a nice day. We
all enjoyed the Blues music of Charlie Wade band and DJ Kenny Green. We had a nice but very light turnout. Sadly, we ended up
bumping heads with the Safeway Silverado event. With that said those who attended had a fun day of music and food. Our kitchen
staff did a fantastic job with the food and service. Many thanks to Monica Shepard for chairing, all the gentlemen who helped to put
up pop-ups and to Tom Dawson for the use of his large tent. Betty and Sandy who helped with cashiering. We live and learn on our
events we will need to get more information to the public and members next year.
Oktoberfest: Was cancelled due to power outage.
Flu Clinic: The Flu Clinic was held on 10/21, thank you to all who volunteered. I understand from the chairman Shelia Cox we gave
over 200 folks their flu shots. Stay healthy everyone.
Soup Simple Supper: Will be on 10/30 in the Club Room, right now I have 9 different soups. If the power holds up, we are good to
go. Hope you were able to attend!
Halloween: Lodge Halloween on 10/25. This is our regular Friday Night BBQ, with added treats. Costume prizes, and pumpkin
decorating. We also welcomed Tucky the caricatures artist.
Samaritan's Purse-Christmas Child, Shoe Box program: I have ordered the shoe boxes but they are not here as of yet. If they do
not arrive soon, I may need to rethink this community event. I will post updates for this at the lodge. Or you can use your own shoe
boxes. Thanks!

Hello Elk Members,
We have had a request to participate in the Christmas Child shoe box program. I will be ordering small boxes to be filled
with children's Christmas gifts and treats. They suggest small toys, stuffed animals and delightful things for kids. No candy, Liquids or toothpaste, this is due to custom issues. You can bring your box to the lodge and I will be delivering them to
Napa Valley Community church on November 18th, 2019. They are requesting a $9.00 donation to pay for shipping as
most of these boxes will be going to children around the world. You can put the $9.00 in an envelope and add it inside your box. You can pick up your Christmas box at the lodge or you can use your own shoe box. Suggested gifts: Dolls, toys such
as jump rope, cars, yo-yos personal items- combs, bar soap, school- crayons, note books, pencils - accessories - socks, hats,
jewelry. These are just a few suggestion please feel free to add your own. Also, they encourage you to add a personal note, pictures or Christmas card. If you have any questions please call me at 252-2284.

The Elks Ear
Well it's here!! Halloween, Thanksgiving, my birthday, Christmas and the New Year’s Eve party. The season is
upon us. Where the hell did this year go? With your help we will make it work. As long as we are in the holiday
mood, don't forget about our own Tim Jaeger"s homecoming this March 2020. This is definitely a first for our
Lodge. We have an outline of the committees that will need help. This is a good time for our new members to get
involved, because at this time none of us are sure what we are doing!!
To use boxes or not to use boxes, that is the question? Much to do about nothing. (Sorry Shakespeare.) In the past
we had a problem with certain people taking home all the lettuce and tomatoes in to go boxes. After outlawing to go
boxes, I think they still stuffed them in their pockets. But our steaks and chickens are so huge you may not be able to
eat all of them. I think as Elks we have better manners than that. Why not use the boxes again; if
some people are that hard up. I am sure this major problem will be addressed in the next House
meeting. (I love a good food fight).
Well enough of your lessons for now, I am going to go ask the Boy's at the Bar if they have had the
same problems with boxes to go with their drinks.
You know that somewhere out there, the Best is Yet to Come!!
