Tonight's Game: The Nashville Sounds and Salt Lake Bees play their series opener at First Tennessee Park tonight. The two teams play one four-game series this season. Tonight, left-hander Wes Benjamin starts for Nashville against right-hander Adrian De Horta for Salt Lake.
Wes Benjamin: 25-year-old Wes Benjamin starts for the Sounds tonight. The left-hander is making his 14th appearance (13th start) of the season and is 1-5 with an 7.26 ERA while covering 57.0 innings. Benjamin has yielded 73 hits and 28 walks to go with his 46 strikeouts. He last pitched on June 9 in a relief appearance at Tacoma and allowed no runs on 2 hits and 4 hits in 4.0 innings. He got a save and struck out 4 batters in Nashville's 3-0 shutout win. Benjamin spent the majority of his 2018 season with Double-A Frisco where he went 5-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 15 starts. The southpaw spent nearly two months on the disabled list from June 7-July 31 with a left elbow strain. Despite missing time, Benjamin led the Frisco staff in wins and ranked among team leaders in strikeouts (3rd), starts (T3rd) and innings (4th). The Rangers drafted the Illinois native in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Kansas University.
Adrian De Horta: 24-year-old Adrian De Horta starts for the Bees in tonight's finale. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.86 ERA in 7 appearances (1 start) with Salt Lake this year. In 19.2 innings, De Horta has yielded 16 hits and 14 walks while recording 24 strikeouts. He has held Pacific Coast League opponents to a .219 batting average. He started the season with Double-A Mobile, and went 0-0 with a 2.03 ERA in 3 games (2 starts), limiting hitters to a .156 average. In De Horta's minor league career, he's 10-15 with a 4.74 ERA in 99 games (67 starts). He was originally drafted by San Diego in the 8th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Bandy leads all Nashville catchers in caught stealing percentage (12-for-38, 31.6%).
Davidson on the Cusp of 200 Home Runs: Slugger Matt Davidson drilled his 17th home run of the season last Thursday night, and his 199th as a professional. Davidson has 150 home runs in minor league ball and 49 in the big leagues. Davidson's 17 home runs in 2019 ranks 6th in the Pacific Coast League.
Cole-Fired Hot: Outfielder Hunter Cole is red-hot at the plate and has hit safely in 12 consecutive games. Since May 17, Cole leads the Pacific Coast League in hitting with a .533 (24-for-45) average. He has 15 runs scored, 5 doubles, 4 home runs, 13 RBI and 5 walks during the 12-game hitting streak. Cole left last Tuesday night's game due to injury and was placed on the 7-day injured list Wednesday.
Cole's Streaks: In addition to his 12-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .533 (24-for-45), Hunter Cole has also reached safely in 17 consecutive games, setting the new season-high for Nashville.
