the whole designThe target that was a representation of the process that I had before, I still believe is a pretty cute analogy, but with a target, tunnel vision is created and the potential for loss of important parts of design process could be lost. I thought maybe this process is kind of like a jaw breaker where you really have to work at each layer of process to get to the next. It definitely has the ideals of the wholistic aspect of this process that I believe in. But once one layer is licked away, it cannot be returned to ever again (red is the dominant color because the problem is all encompassing)

design as a statementThe evolution of the target into a concentric shape, is a depiction that allows for more freedom in movement between these steps . In this model, it really emphasizes the overlapping of steps while honing in on a potential solution. Its really about taking the needs of the client and really taking the time to understand the problem properly to give time to come up with a wide range of concepts, and giving more time for the refinement of the solution (s) and if that solution is not totally acceptable, I would just go back to refinement, This also speaks to another design philosophy of mine, that design is a statement.

over the years, lights have helped us with problems directly or

indirectly: candles ease stress, spotlights pull focus, Glow of

a laptop means you’ve been working too late, green on a traffic

stress, lack of focus, time

management, & motivation

Then I continued by, “Exploring” & “Defining” the topic

in particular

lights that aren’t necessarily

geared towards an age group

are very functional and lack

Another aspect that I want to take advantage of is the

emotional. by creating a form that elicits an emotional

connection or bond, the user will be willing to use it often and

properly

There are “light timers” that exist, but they are all conceptual pieces

that do not appeal to either adults or children. They are sterile and

create a sort of pressure and connotation that time is running out in

a negative sense.

In any market, there has been this interesting intersection of

merging things that are considered more adult-like to a more

youthful aesthetic. These come in the form of clever use of color,

and interesting use of shapes & materials

After that I began to explore

when I began to ideate I found my self

drawing really simple shapes with

simply comlptex functions

The concept direction that was chosen was to mix the idea of a simple, elegant referntial form with an ambient glow, then when tapped or petted it would change into a work light for a certain amount of time..

And I quickly Froze the concept

The 2 form directions for forms that

were being explored are either in the

vein of kid robot or the break down of

positive, cute, reassuring, images into

basic basic shapes

Then I immediately began to refine

I began by drawing a lot of thumbnails, and

eventually felt that the most important part of

this concept would be the form, so I quickly moved

from thumbnails to clay, but the forms still felt off

IT was suggested to go through the creation of a

story board to see what the product would go

through and the kind of form & features that it

would call for.

I want to read before

bed...

Taking the scenarios from the story boards, I figured that

the little shapes that I had been coming up with were

poinier and a little sharper than I had thought. I began to

round out the shapes and eventually move forward with

one, using the concept of legs as a way to enforce and

house the lighting concept

while I had my final form almost there, it was still missing

the personality that would tap into the the emotional

aspect that I am aiming for. IT was suggested I look at the

stretch and squish aspect of old disney animation

this little chart helped me

immensley in the refinement of

the form adding personality

and emotion.

As a starting off point I Created a large clay mock up, with cartoony features and exaggurations, then as time

went on I began to take out the features that made it cartoony (left page) then I began to add mass (right page)

to account for the portability, the tapping function, and the overall cutenss of the form, adding an eager stance

even as i was making the final model, I found it too be a little too chunky, so as I was

carving and working onthe model, I would carry it around with me and work with it

as if it were a light to make adjustments to the shape and size, The model is made of

modulan, bobbles, and has a removable ac adaptor

design as a wholeThis target is a representation of my previous process, its organized in a very orderly fashion, with the client or problem as its outer ring, and in the very center is a solution. To understand the process of the 125 project, I took an inventory of the steps that I took during the duration of the project, and I broke them down into generic steps. Then I took those steps and began to redefine, add, or alter the processes of each step to ensure better results.

generalizationsI followed this very general process, which allowed me the flexibility to do what I feel needed to get done without the pressure of needing to be at one point of design verses another

design is a carefully thought out statementI still believe that design is a statement but what changed here was that I added the definition step twice halfway through and a red over lay to say that the pormpt is what is more important and should be thought of at everyt step of the way

Revised processat the end I found that my process had worked about

80% of the time, I found myself having to refer back to

steps that were higher up the exclamation point to

redefine and reasses the concepts process.
