Legal Separation
The ESO role includes balancing the
electricity grid second by second. As
the electricity system becomes more
flexible this role will need to evolve.
The ESO will need to work more
closely with local electricity distribution
network operators (DNOs) to manage
electricity flows across the grids.
Electricity Transmission’s role is
adapting to keep pace with an ever-
changing system. The business
separation is an opportunity for us to
keep consumers' household bills down
by working to ensure and enable more
competition, coordination, and
innovation across the transmission
network in England and Wales.
In April 2019, Electricity Transmission will legally separate
from the Electricity System Operator (ESO) within the National Grid Group.

We offer two main ways to connect to the HV network
Provision of a bay Tertiary Connection
• Large capacity
• Firm connection
• Bay provided at
substation voltage
(132 / 275 / 400kV)
• Up to 60MVA Capacity
• Non-Firm connection*
• 33kV connection
* If the SGT is on outage then there is no alternative
route for energy so the generating unit must be off
and will not be compensated by NGESO or NGET.
Maintenance is typically 3 weeks every 3 years.

We recognise that our
connections have traditionally
been for large customers -
that’s why we’ve designed a
smaller connection type
for developers of smaller
projects.

Our Environmental performance and priorities
Natural environment
We own a huge amount of land (over 7,000 hectares), including over 300 substations and the non-operational land around them.
We are committed to making our contribution to achieving the UK’s 25 year environment plan by managing our land in ways that deliver the greatest value to us, our communities and the wider environment.
Net gain
We are pioneering a new approach (aligned to UK government strategic direction) that measures biodiversity and Natural Capital impacts, and opportunities associated with our major projects, so that we leave the environment in a better condition that it was before.

Our climate commitment
Reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gases (GHG), including the GHG emissions associated with electricity line losses
Carbon PricingWe are putting a price on carbon to help inform our major investment decisions
We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from our processes and operations.
By 2050, we have a target to reduce GHG emissions by 80% (from a 1990 baseline) with an interim target of 70% reduction by 2030.
