TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents, Students & Friends of St Ambrose,
Today, Catholic schools are called to take on a
greater role in supporting parents in fulfilling the
promises made at Baptism. So how do we as a
school community do this? The simplest explanation
one might give is in the context of the sacraments
themselves, treating our parish school as a living
sacrament, characterised by:
Our parish school presupposes faith: without
faith our parish school says nothing, it is just
another school.
Our parish school expresses faith: in and
through the parish school, people express
themselves to God.
Our parish school nurtures faith: it helps us stay
connected to our faith roots and to our faith
community.
Our parish school calls for ongoing conversion:
we need to keep turning to God. The parish
school is a special place filled with moments in
a child’s life that encourage them to constantly
search for God’s presence and God’s will for
them.
Our parish school makes the “church” visibly
present. It reminds us of our duty as a member of
the Church community to not simply “receive”
grace through participating in the life of the
parish school but to “be” grace for others.
St Ambrose & Our Lady of the Rosary celebrating this
year’s Mission Day Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

This Sunday’s Gospel Mt 22:34-40
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced
the Sadducees they got together and, to
disconcert him, one of them put a question,
‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of
the law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your
God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with
all your mind. This is the greatest and the first
commandment. The second resembles it: you
must love your neighbour as yourself. On these
two commandments hang the whole Law, and the
Prophets also.’
A Gospel Reflection…. This week’s Gospel ties in beautifully
with the Junior School Inquiry Unit and todays Immigration Museum
Excursion. Nguyen Van Mah is one of eight sons. In 1978 his
poor farming parents had to decide which one of
their 12 children would be sent on a boat from
Vietnam. They knew there was a great risk that
they would be sending their son to his death on
the South China Sea.
At 4.00 am a knock on the door of the family home
came and Mah said his goodbyes. He has not seen
his parents since. Mah was blindfolded and
travelled in the back of a truck for eight hours. He
was led through the jungle to a beach where the
blindfold was removed. Mah told me that
sometimes at this moment people are shot by evil
traders who collect the money without any
intention of dispatching a boat. That families never
hear from their children is no surprise.
Mah told me, ‘We were lucky, we made it off the
beach.’ There were 29 adults in a boat built for 10.
Inadequately prepared for the two week trip, all
the boat people were sick, hungry and exposed.
Thai pirates attacked their boat, executed three
men and raped all the women on board. They were
to bury another six people at sea who died from
the effects of the journey.
On sighting land, the remaining 20 people in Mah's
boat thought hope had arrived. But the Malaysian
Navy, under orders to fire on all Vietnamese boats,
forced it to return to international waters. Mah told
me, ‘At this point I almost lost my faith in God and
human beings. I was going to die.’
The boat began to take water and was noticed by
a Dutch trading ship which rescued them and
deposited them in the Philippines. Mah migrated
to Australia 12 months later and is now the local
doctor in an outback community that could not get
a doctor for two years.
Isaiah tells us today ‘You shall not wrong or
oppress a resident alien for you were aliens in the
land of Egypt.’ Jesus tells us in the Gospel that the
love of God is fulfilled precisely in as much as we
love our neighbour.
No pressing issue in the Western World, it seems
to me, invites such hysteria as does immigration.
Until recently, most western countries have been
good in offering hospitality to people who have
chosen to leave, or have had to flee their country
of birth. Given our comparative wealth this
hospitality is entirely appropriate. And it is also
appropriate for our countries to have a threshold
number for the sake of the common good.
In today’s Gospel, however, Jesus does not
promise us that the love of God and neighbour is
going to cost us nothing. Jesus’ law of love
involves sacrifice for us individually and as a
nation. Through the acceptance of this teaching
we are committing ourselves to being our
neighbour's keeper. In another part of the same
Gospel, Jesus tells us that ‘those to whom much
has been given, much will be required.’ Sadly,
many of us want the good life for ourselves, while
doing very little to help other countries become
more liveable, and then we can reject people who
want to share in the blessings we have worked for
and inherited.
The Gospel of Matthew gives us the story of Mary,
Joseph and Jesus being forced to flee Israel for
Egypt as refugees. If the Holy Family were coming
our way these days, they might be sent back to
King Herod. May this Eucharist see in us a change
of heart that enables our faith to act justly toward
all people everywhere. May our goodness and
hospitality mirror on earth the welcome we hope
to enjoy from Jesus, Mary and Joseph in the
kingdom which is promised to all, irrespective of
where any of us has been born.

2018 Organisational Matters Several weeks ago staff gathered for consultation
regarding the classroom structures for 2018. At this
meeting we also reviewed the finances for the
coming year, the impact it has upon staffing
allocation and support programs, and the
timetabling of curriculum to ensure that we are able
to maximize student learning engagement and
opportunity. We are very committed to ensuring that
our classrooms are supported with education
support officers (teacher aides) however, this is very
dependent upon funding received from school fees,
along with state and federal government funding.
The support provided this year has been exceptional
and we are seeking ways of trying to at least
maintain what has been achieved so far.
Staffing Matters Currently we are working out our staffing
arrangements for next year. There are still many
factors to be considered but we are able, at this
stage, to confirm the following. Mrs. Kristy Cavric will
be shortly going on maternity leave and we are still
finalizing arrangements for her replacement for the
remainder of this year. Mrs. Amy Beaumont & Mrs
Kelly Woodman, who currently teach Grade 4/5BW,
will be taking on different roles next year. Amy will be
working as our Physical Education teacher for 2018,
whilst Kelly will be teaching e-Learning as an
additional specialist class for all students from Prep
to Grade 6. In addition to this, we are able to confirm
also that Mrs. Barb Ryan will continue to teach at St
Ambrose for next year, something we know many
parents will be thrilled about.
Currently Mrs. Christine McLay has been teaching
our Grade 5/6R class. It has been fantastic to have
Christine in this classroom given the great rapport
she has established with her students and parents
alike. Her appointment this term was unexpected
and we were fortunate to be able to employ her on
such short notice. Christine, due to family needs, is
only available to work 3 days a week as of Week 5
of this term. In order to ensure continued consistency
for our students in this grade, we have been able to
secure Christine as their primary teacher for
Mondays to Wednesdays, and Mrs. Alison Raco for
Fridays given that specialist classes occur on
Thursdays. We acknowledge that we would prefer to
have a fulltime teacher in the classroom, but given
the circumstances and the work already achieved
by Christine, who will be supported by Alison for the
remainder of this year, we believe this is the best
outcome possible.
2018 Class Structures Strong demand for placement at St Ambrose, not
only in Prep but in most grade levels, has ensured
that numbers continue to remain high. The strength
of demand for enrolment into St Ambrose has
resulted in us having a number of grades that have
a waiting list.
Following the staff consultative committee and
reviewing all options available to us based upon the
student numbers across the school, the following
class structures will be in place for next year:
Prep/1: Prep/1: Gr 1/2: Gr 1/2: Gr 2/3: Gr 3/4:
Gr 4/5: Gr 5/6: Gr 5/6.
Class Lists & Orientation Days Thank you to the many parents that have written or
emailed me in the past two weeks in regard to their
child’s learning and social needs when considering
placement into a class for next year.
Our placement of students is based upon
professional observations, assessments made
throughout the year, peer relationships and family
consultation.
One only has to imagine what is like to create a
‘ready to go’ family that consisted of 26 members of
similar age but hugely different experiences, skills
and abilities. In doing so, you have to think of each
personality, gifts and abilities, together with the
social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs. It’s a
daunting task but a task made much easier when
consultation occurs.
The transition (orientation) days are a strategy we
use to provide our students with a sense of
belonging, an opportunity to get to know both the
teacher and the students they will share in the
coming year, and to get a sense of the learning
environment they will be working within.
These days will take place on:
Monday 4th & Monday 11th December 2017
2018 School Fees & Levies Following the School Finance Meeting, we wish to
advise parents of the 2018 school fees and levies.
The School Family Fee for 2018 is: $1780 per family.
Current families will notice that this is exactly the
same as the current year’s family fee. The School
Family Fee will be payable in three instalments over
the first three terms of the school year. This billing
process aims to remove expenses from Term 4 where
people have other priorities, including Christmas.
The Student Levy for all students for the 2018 school
year remains the same as this year: $485. The
Student Levy specifically covers costs associated
with curriculum, e.g. books, e-learning, art material,
excursions and incursions.
Please note that there will be no further request for
funds throughout the year for either Excursions,
Sports Programs or Sacramental Programs.
It is important to understand that the levies collected
are pooled so as to ensure the best value for dollar is
achieved.
We take pride in the fact that we are able to
achieve excellent educational outcomes for our
students whilst providing an affordable Catholic
education. In keeping our costs low and affordable,
it is essential that families contribute to their child’s
education by ensuring that payment of the fees and
levies are made each year.
For 2018, the Student Levy of $485 is to be paid by
Friday 24th February 2018. This is essential as the
school is billed well prior to this date for the resources
purchased for the coming year.
Please note that all school fees are due at the
beginning of each billing period or by instalments as
arranged with the Principal. Any alternative
arrangements need to be organised with the
Principal during the first term.
For families who are currently in arrears for the
2016/2017 school year and have not made an
arrangement with the school, it is essential that you
please attend to your account as soon as possible or
to contact the office prior to next Friday 17th
November 2017. Families in arrears will be asked to
enter into a payment plan so as to ensure that
arrears do not become unmanageable. Please note
that we do everything we can to hold costs down
whilst providing the best education opportunities
possible for your child.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank
the many parents who have supported the school in
a non-financial way through their participation in
classroom activities and parent groups.
Our community, as a whole, has gained greatly from
the gift of their time, effort and support.
2018 Classes – Parental Input Last week we invited parents, if they wish to do so, to
write in and provide us with further insight into your
child’s learning and social needs so that we are
better placed to allocate a grade for them that best
suits their needs.
Your child’s current teachers spend an amazing
amount of time during the school year with your
child. They are aware of most but maybe not all of
your child’s strengths and challenges from a school
perspective. It is their knowledge, observation and
wisdom that provide the basis from which class
structures and placement are created.
However, as a parent, your knowledge is far more
profound through the simple relationship of child
and parent. You hear the story of their daily school
experience and know intimately of your child’s
strengths, challenges and amazing potential. You
know of the relationships they have in and outside of
school, the learning and teachers that inspire them
to do their best and the friendships that either help
them to flourish or struggle.
It is within this context that we ask you to write about
your child’s learning and social needs.
When receiving a letter that requests a specific
teacher, knowing that the teacher may not be in the
same year level the following year, I read it as a
parent’s way of expressing the type of teacher their
child responds well to. In doing so, it affirms the
quality, temperament, characteristics of the
teaching staff that we wish to foster at St Ambrose.
At the same time, it gives me an insight into the
quality of relationship that has been formed
between parent and teacher over the year. A
positive relationship between parent and teacher
makes a huge difference to the way a student
engages in their learning and the school community.
Thank you again to the parents who have already
taken the time to write in.
All letters or emails must be received by Friday 17th
November and addressed to the principal marked
“Confidential”. The email address to use is:

CANTEEN CLOSED
MONDAY 30th OCTOBER.
On Thursday, senior students had a Japanese drum (Taiko) workshop with Mrs. Kiyomi Calwell from EZ Japanese.
Yamashita sensei also plays taiko in her hometown back in Japan (a very different style from Mrs Kiyomi’s taiko), and strongly believes that taiko helps us to learn about mindfulness, team building and respect for each other.
Senior students also learnt frequently used Japanese words during the session such as ‘hai, sensei’, ‘iie, sensei’, ‘arigato gozaimashita’
I would like to ask all senior students to share your experience of learning taiko and teach new words to your friends and family. Ganbarimashita! (Congratulations, you worked hard!)
For junior students (Grades 1 and 2 students), we are very fortunate to welcome a group of volunteer people from Japan on Tuesday 28th November.
They are going to share their exceptional skills in three areas;
Japanese tea ceremony,
Kimono dressing
Origami making.
If you would like to come along and be an observer at these sessions, please let us know as we’d love to see you there.

POTENTIAL CODE RED DAY
SCHOOL CLOSURE
In the event of extreme fire danger and a CODE RED
day being called, the following provides information
as to how we, as a school will act and communicate
with you.
The decision to close will be confirmed by the
Emergency Management Commissioner no later
than 1.00 pm the day prior to the closure. Once we
have received confirmation of the closure we will
contact you directly via email and SMS before the
end of the school day to confirm this. You are urged
to check the Department of Education and Training
website for updates, school closures will be posted
to the Department’s website – see
http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs
/health/pages/closures.aspx
Please note that all of our school bus routes will also
be closed; services will resume when the school
reopens.
I realise that the potential closure of our school may
result in you having to make alternative
arrangements for your child, but the safety of our
students and staff remains our top priority. Given the
predicted weather conditions, we urge that your
child is not left at home unattended or in the care of
older children.
If you know of other parents who, for any reason,
may not be aware of the school’s potential closure,
please contact them to help ensure they are aware
that the school may be closed.
You should also explain to your child and family
members that our school may be closed. For safety
reasons, no staff will be on-site if the school is closed.
