Policy and Planning Committee Report
Dr. Jennifer Sandoval, Chairperson
Dr. Steve J. CollinsPresenting
NSCM Policy & Planning Committee Report for January 31, 2020
I. The committee is paying close attention to faculty concerns related to the downtown campus and student perception of instruction reports from Fall 2019. The committee has asked Faculty Excellence if we can get a de-identified report of student comments for data analysis.
II. The committee is also very aware of the continued strain of the two-college system and has continued to press the administration about a timeline and decision with regard to NSMC’s future structure
III. The committee continues to engage in discussion regarding a proposal for graduate and honors advising incentives.
NSCM Policy & Planning Committee Report for January 31, 2020 (cont.)
IV. The committee is proposing an amendment to the school handbook to add the requirement of staggering elections of representatives to ensure committee continuity
a. Handbook amendment under section 4.2.1Committee members shall be elected for terms of two years, with representatives from the same department on staggered appointments. In cases where staggering was not possible special one-year term elections may take place.
Graduate on time, with a Degree that

Burnout“Emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, reduced feelings of personal accomplishment “ (West el al., 2016, p. 2272).
“Loss of emotional, mental, and physical energy due to continued job-related stress” (Fortney et al., 2013, p. 412)
Greater workload demands are correlated to greater instances of burnout among academics (Sabagh, Hall, & Saroyan, 2018).
Faculty burnout is correlated with “anxiety, depression, poor health, disengagement, dissatisfaction, and turnover” (Sabagh et al., 2018, p. 145).
Stewart Friedman
Balance is a lie! (I’m paraphrasing)
Work/Life is a false binary.
Examine the value of integrating four domains of life.
Career-Life Integration Project(CLIP)
The P stands for PROJECT, not program (bottom up, not top down).
This is NOT a committee.
The focus is discovering how to make the work domain better support the other three domains.
There is not one answer/way/solution.
There will be no mandatory service or forced fun.
We will choose what we want and what we don’t want from many options.
So what’s the bottom line?
If You’re Interested in Building the CLIP
Take an invitation from your table and let me know if you’d like to join the CLIP mailing list.
We will have in-person meetings Downtown and Legacy on the dates noted on the invitation.
Come prepared with ideas!

Extremely Satisfied/Somewhat Satisfied
0 5 10 15 20 25 30
How satisfied are you with the NSCM organizational transition process over the
past academic year?
“The transition is hamstrung because it is a middle ground to the unknown destination. That being said, communication has been good, but the overall process is a bit clumsy as a necessary limitation of working with such uncertainty.”
“There are a lot of moving parts, and I understand the difficulty that comes with reorganization, and I think everyone is trying to make the best decisions. But, a lack of resources is straining staff and faculty. Faculty in admin roles are doing too many things that staff should be doing, and we don't have enough staff for their current workload.”
“It was a necessary evil but lots still unclear.”

Extremely Satisfied/Somewhat Satisfied
How satisfied are you with the amount, content, and frequency of communication
from NSCM leaders within in the school?
“People are trying, which is appreciated.”
“With all the layers of leadership we now have, the perception is that there are different levels of what information is shared.”
“There is more information sent off than I can handle.”
Additional questions, concerns, or feedback
Nicholson School of Communication and Media
“This has been a difficult year given transition, move to downtown, change in senior leadership in the University, and dealing with two colleges. It wouldbe nice if we became an independent unit and senior leadership team is identified and in place.”
“School leadership is generally awful. I would feel much better about being shoved into a college or other standalone unit with honest, caring people incharge.”
Administration is supposed to operate in the background of a university in a way that helps faculty do their jobs better. This is just not happening inthis school, and it's harming the careers and mental health of every single person here. Please work to fix this before it's too late. People don't quit jobs;they quit bosses.
