How can we assure that we are doing the

right things?

How can we assure that we are doing the

right things? For everyone? That will save resources? That will improve services?

That will be adopted?

“You would be a fool to design a

system based on an interchange

protocol.”

- Mark Bide, EDItEUR

Some “next generation library

systems” are already in production

Defining what you are by what you are not

Not designing a specNot picking

winners/losersNot advancing any

“agenda”

A good specification is

necessary

A good specification is

necessarybut it is not sufficient

It is in…. Adoption

(or rather, in its absence)

The point at which most standards fail is not prior to consensus

How can NISO help?

DEFINING A BIBLIOGRAPHIC ROADMAP

A NISO SYMPOSIUMAPRIL 15-16, 2013

Meeting Goals:Identify/Discuss active

projectsBrainstorm existing gapsPrioritize 3-6 subtopics

Plan deeper exploration of issues

Diversify players in discussion

Planned outcomes of meeting were:

1) Identify and prioritize topics for further exploration

2)Identify gaps in our collective

understanding of the future

of bibliographic exchange

3) Provide a forum for sharing data exchange

efforts and in turn, expose them to a

broader international community

4) Organize next steps to advance understanding of

these issues

Report of suggested ideas

Where to next?

Based on the outcome of this

meeting:

Identify 3-5 projects for further

discussion

Convene small discussion groups

of 5-10 expertsfor each topic

Arrange 2-3 calls with suggested

experts

Discussion roundtable of

expertsat ALA Midwinter

(by invitation)

Final Report distributed in March 2014
